The discussion of supply chains going green has become a bone of contention among major stakeholders in the industry. The discussion started after the Carbon disclosure project released a report indicating that supply chains contributed greatly to the emission of carbon in the atmosphere. Due to the report, pressure has been mounting on the administration of supply chains to implement strategies on their carbon management. Analysts have however stated that there are various pros and cons of the supply chains going green, which have to be considered in the implementation of carbon management strategies. This paper analyzes the pros and cons of supply chains going green.

Advantages of supply chains going green

Improvement in financial performance over time

There are various benefits associated with companies going green. One of the benefits of supply chains going green is the positive impact that it has on the financial performance of the supply chain. Despite the myth that cutting carbon emissions increases expense, there is evidence that cutting on carbon emissions has a great impact on cutting expenses of the supply chains. Through a systematic approach to the manner in which the supply chains operate, it is possible for the administration to analyze how carbon management strategies will cut costs for their organization. Through empirical evidence from companies such as Wal-Mart that have already applied certain strategies in managing their carbon emissions, they have been able to improve their financial performance over time. It is however important for companies to understand that the improvement of financial performance as a result of going green is not immediate since the company has to adjust in its operations, which might take a while

Personal Perspective Paper

...along with individual steps that lead up to making an sound and effective decision. Through the course of this paper I will share with you my personal experiences with decision making models. Doing my time employed as a logistic manager with JB Hunt Transport we used a decision making model called simulation modeling. This program allowed our companies managers to experience and test out new products and services without disrupting the flow of the day to day operation. This system would prove to very beneficial long term to the operation. Without the use of simulation modeling the testing of these services would have to be done real time and wasted driver hours. This could have created customer service failures and enormous amount of loss wages and productivity. The success of this process was directly the result of this model. My thoughts of decision making models will continue to be favorable. My final experience of using a decision making model was when I was 17 years old. It was the beginning of my senior year and my mother was discussing my future after high school. She asked me to write down three things that I would like to do after graduation. I only could come up with two which was college and the air force. We sat down and discussed the positive and negatives of both and the end result I selected the Air Force. In closing as discussed in class there are several decision models available to help each one of us make sound decisions regarding both are personal...

COURSE DESCRIPTION Supply Chain Management involves the flows of materials and information among all of the firms that contribute value to a product, from the source of raw materials to end customers. We will integrate issues from marketing (channels of distribution), logistics, and operations management to develop a broad understanding of a supply chain. By taking a strategic perspective, we will focus on relatively long term decisions involving the investment in productive resources, configuration of processes, product designs, and development of parterships with suppliers and channels of distribution. Although the development of analytical tools is not one of the primary objectives of the course, students should be comfortable with quantitative analysis. By the end of the course, you should have developed an appreciation for the major strategic issues trade-offs in supply chain management as well as the ability to use conceptual frameworks to make decisions. College

...Why Go To College? It is a cold, brisk morning; the sun has not quite peeked above the mountains yet. I get up to the sound of my alarm clock ringing and trudge to take a shower and get clothes put on. I grab my books from the previous night’s study along with my car keys and head out the door. I toss my books into the passenger seat and begin my weekly routine of driving to East Tennessee State University’s main campus in Johnson City. It is quite a journey to take since coming from such a small town atmosphere. The whole way there I am constantly thinking; “It is way too early for this.” “Other people are not having to do this or drive this far.” “People who are not going to college are getting to sleep in right now.” “Is going to college worth the daily struggle?” That is when my better judgment kicks in and says, “YES! Yes, it is worth it! Now, get it done.” It will be worth it when I get into medical school and get the job of my dreams. People constantly ask how school is going. My generic answer is always “good.” I do not ever let the asker know how swamped with homework I am or how stressed about meeting deadlines I am or just the everyday pressure I feel for having to be successful in all of my classes. On the outside, I make it look easy and that college is a breeze but on the inside I am at war with myself. My constant mantra is “It will all be worth it in the end.” There are many benefits in going to college like: broaden horizons, more support, a better education...

Childhood Obesity

...Childhood Obesity SOSC 102 Professor November 7, 2014 Childhood Obesity Childhood obesity is a major, growing health issue in the United States. It is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child’s health or well-being. Children become overweight for a number of reasons. Some of the causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, eating unhealthy, medical illness, family and peer problems. Healthy eating and active living are major factors that can eliminate childhood obesity, or merely reduce the growing numbers that obviously exist in society today. “Over the past three decades, since the 1970s, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6 to 11 years.” Ogden et al (as cited in Koplan, 2005, p. 22). Obese children in those age groups may suffer a lot of emotional or psychological stress. They can feel depressed and unhappy because of constant teasing from peers about being overweight. This could cause them to have low self-esteem and might hinder their ability to socialize with others effectively. Other negative effects, are that they develop behavioral problems, which in turn often negatively affects their academic growth. Active Generations is a promising obesity prevention program with emphasis on nutrition education. Students who participate in this program increase their understanding of the connection...

...The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People A Life Application Alexander K.M. Aflague University of Guam BA 240 29 Nov 2015 A Life Application Before even reading the book “The 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen covey, I looked through the table of contents and realized that I had already experienced all seven of the habits he had expressed in the book. This was all related to my twelve years I had spent in the Army before my injury had happened. I was released then started attending school, and eventually ending up in a Management class where the book appeared. I realized that I am now reliving it through the college experience and eventually will reuse the habits in the civilian work force. Although many of the experiences were similar in certain ways, reading the book itself gave me a much better perspective and understanding from these habits. The outcome of each was so different from what I had experienced in the Army. The power of the Paradigm, which was covered in part one of his book, stated that, “We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be” (Covey p.32). Just like a service member, whether still in or out of the service, has a smile every day to cover the sadness, Anger, and pain, which they may be struggling from PTSD, stress, and anxiety. We all tend to live each day where everything is perfect or bad because that’s how we see it. Simply said as people just think strictly inside the box where...

...FREDERICK W. SMITH August 11, 1944 marks a special day in history, not because a local, tiny hospital recorded another birth at their facility, or that the humble little town in Marks, Mississippi added another “member” to their thriving population of about 1,500; it marks a day when a little boy, born of modest means, would grow and learn how to make an honest dollar and eventually lead the corporate world, through savvy business relationships and exemplary leadership practices, to a place never before thought possible, the place of overnight logistics with next-day, on-time delivery. Frederick Wallace Smith, the son of a successful businessman, grew up in a tiny town in rural Mississippi. His father, James Frederick Smith, owned a chain of restaurants known as Toddle House; he also owned Smith Motor coach Company (renamed the Dixie Greyhound Lines after the Greyhound corporation bought a controlling interest in 1931). Fred Smith’s father died, however, when the boy was only 4 years old, leaving him to be raised by his mother and uncles. –Kouzes and Pousner (Kouzes, 2003) Now, some may say that the longstanding legacy of hard work, honest business practices and sound leadership ethics died with the passing of Smith’s father; I, however, beg to differ. I believe that the young Fred Smith, despite his early age, saw a man of character and a leader in his father who, in his time, helped shaped the face of fine dining and cross-country travel the way we’ve come...
