After reading part 1 of Passing by Mark Haddon I was left with a bunch of questions. For example why is the English so poor in this novel? Mark Haddon is an English novelist, and the writing is very sloppy and all over the place. Also, the main character Christopher John Francis Boone seems to have some sort of disability. Most importantly what happened to the first chapter of this book? Why does it start on chapter 2 and who killed the dog? I want answers to all these questions in order to figure out Christopher’s Identity. This book begins with a boy named Christopher stumbling across a dead dog with a pitchfork in it. Just from reading the first paragraph I could tell that the main character had something different about him. I was trying to understand why this book sounded like a 5th grader wrote it. The next passage with Sioban kind of answered my question as to why the writing is so poor. Sioban is Christopher’s best friend, and she was showing Christopher faces with emotions on them and having Chris tell her what it meant. Christopher was having a lot of difficulty interpreting the emotion Sioban was showing him. This made me believe that Christopher has Asperger Syndrome or something that makes it hard for him to understand body language and other forms of human interaction. The sad part is that I can’t really see a clear identity in Christopher. He doesn’t know how to communicate with people, and that is key to having an identity. He is very socially awkward and the reactions he has to certain things are
Murphy 2 unpredictable. For example when the officer went to pick him up off the ground Christopher smacked him. He got arrested for assaulting an officer but didn’t seem to be all that concerned. Another incident that happened that shows he doesn’t know how to react to peoples emotions was when Mrs. Shears came over to the seen of the dead dog screaming with anger. Christopher didn’t know how to react to her anger and he just dropped to the ground. He even says, “ I don’t like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I don’t know what is going to happen.” (Haddon 4) Not only is he socially awkward but also he depends on other people to have the answers for him or to support him. He is always showing Sioban his work in order to get her approval. He also does a lot of rambling and gives a lot of information that is not necessary. It throws me off as a reader for example he talks about how the officers were questioning him and then relates it randomly to his Uncle Terry’s job. This book so far is very confusing but it’s interesting and hard to put down. I have so many questions I want answers too. I’m looking forward to seeing how this book plays out, and finding out what Christopher has that makes him so unusual. I don’t believe Christopher has an established identity.

Passing for White

...Malcolm Evans Professor Schutte ENGL 102 CFA 04 April 2012 Passing I believe when Irene was with Clare in Chicago, they both experienced a dramatic time period in both of their lives. Since Irene’s memory is emotional with sharp remembrance of being humiliated, I think that both, Irene and Clare’s, true identities were exposed. The reason why I’m assuming that happened to them “that time in Chicago” is because they both suffered from an emotional event that caused Irene to have a flashback memory that took place two years prior to her reading the letter, and because of the title and information given on the cover of the book. By Irene looking at four words, she was able to create a sharp image of that moment like it happened the previous day of her reading the letter. The only time a person has a flash back memory is when an unexpected event in a person’s life occurs that has strong emotional associations, such as fear, horror, or joy (233 Ciccarelli). With that being said, Clare could also be talking about the time when she and Irene saw her father being brought in after dying in a saloon-fight. With them experiencing an unexpected emotional event like that in both of their lives at a young age, it makes that situation hard to forget. “Seen across the long stretch of years, the thing had more the appearance of an outpouring of pent-up fury than of an overflow of grief for her dead father (2 Larsen). I think with Clare having ivory skin, a scarlet mouth, and a green...

Song Analysis: Without Love

...‘Without Love’ is a song from the 2007 musical ‘Hairspray’. It is sung by Link Larkin, Tracy Turnblad, Seaweed Stubbs and Penny Pingleton, in Act 2. The song explains the troubles the teens have gone through to find love with each other, as they all come from different worlds, that normally shouldn’t be together, Tracy being a plus size teen, contrasting with Link being a teen actor, and Seaweed being of a race, who wasn’t allowed be with Penny, a Caucasian teen with an overbearing mother. This song fits into the Greek category of Eros. This is the sexual type of love that was often looked down upon by the Ancient Greeks, as being dangerous, irrational and loss of control, which is contradictory of what today’s love is described as, falling...

...by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch,...

...everyone started to develop as the recording of the film came through; the acting skills, leadership and teamwork. This was some of the features you could see during one of our recordings. For my personal development I could see some very positive things during the recording. At the start I had the idea of doing a comedy, but I missed one lesson and my teammates changed the whole idea of the subject. I needed to give up for my idea, this is something I really don’t like to do, but I did it for my team. After the first recording I realised that it was a really easy paper to play and a good story. Throughout the recordings I felt that my drama skills got better in some ways. For example there was a scene were there were a lot f small children passing by and we needed to speak really loudly for the camera to hear us. It was an opportunity to project my level of voice; this was something I never had a chance to do before. I think that a good teamwork is something very difficult to gain, especially in a group of people you don’t actually work a lot with. This was a good way of gaining patience and learning what every over teammate had to offer. The ways in which the team was divided was seen very fast; Emilia had the power about organization, doing everything good and quick, Alexa was like the one that helped with everything, recording, doing the script, etc. Alexis and me were...

Pos 355 Failures

...Failures POS/355 August 26, 2013 UOPX Failures Distributed systems emerged recently in the world of computers. A distributed system is an application of independent computers that appear to work as a coherent system to its users. The advantages of distributed systems consist of developing the ability to continually to open interactions with other components to accommodate a number of computers and users. Thus, stating that a stand-alone system is not as powerful as a distributed system that has the combined capabilities of distributed components. This type of system does have its complications and is difficult to maintain complex interactions continual between running components. Problems do arise because distributed systems are not without its failures. Four types of failures will characterize and the solutions to two of these failures will address on how to fix such problems. Before constructing a distributed system reliable one must consider fault tolerance, availability, reliability, scalability, performance, and security. Fault tolerance means that the system continues to operate in the event of internal or external system failure to prevent data loss or other issues. Availability needed to restore operations to resume procedure with components has failed to perform. For the system to run over a long period without any errors is need and known as reliability. To remain scalable means to operate correctly on a large scale. Performance and security remains needed...

Stream-oriented Communication E&IT Department, WUT DOS / Communication (II) – p. 2 Message-oriented Communication – Introduction √ When it cannot be assumed that the receiving side is executing at the time a request (in RPC or RMI) is issued, alternative communication services are needed. The inherent synchronous nature of RPCs and RMIs, by which a client is blocked until its request has been processed, sometimes has to be replaced. Message-oriented communication is proposed. √ √ The message-passing paradigm is widely used approach for programming parallel machines, especially those with distributed memory. The Referral Process

...Refera The Pre-Referral Process: Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) /Response to Intervention (RTI) Anika M. Taylor Special Education Foundations and Framework February 20, 2013 Schools and entire districts have embarked on multiple strategies to address challenging areas for students with disabilities and those at risk for behavioral and academic failures.  Over the years, educators and policymakers have recognized the need to create, implement, and document practices that have proven to make an impact on student learning and behaviors. Many of the strategies used have focused on the collection of data and the collaboration between and amongst professionals. Today, educators agree that the key to effective interventions for students at risk for failure and those with disabilities lies in a comprehensive approach that fosters growth in student overall learning and behaviors. Several approaches were designed to meet the challenges that students experience as they engage in their learning. These approaches include two processes outlined in this discussion: Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS). Response to Intervention (RTI) integrates assessments and intervention within a school wide, multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement and reduce behavior problems. The RTI process helps to identify students for poor learning outcomes, provide evidence based interventions and...

Quick Response

...The Reality of Quick Response (QR) in the Japanese Fashion Sector and the Strategy Ahead for the Domestic SME Apparel Manufacturers Nobby (Nobukaza) Azuma School of Management Heriot-Watt University UK E-mail: nobukaza@aol.com N.Azuma@hw.ac.uk Fax: +44-(0) 131-451-3498 Abstract Quick Response (QR) has long been perceived as the essential survival strategy of the textile and apparel (T-A) manufacturers in the developed economies against offshore competition. However, the regionalization of global economies and active governmental investment in the T-A industry in the offshore countries has allowed the offshore QR to become increasingly feasible. This changing facet of QR may spell out more lucrative opportunities for Japanese "apparel firms", which have predominantly in-house creative and marketing functions, to widen the scope and the scale of their fashion business operations, since the economic upgrading in the Pacific Rim will create a huge consumer market that shares similar fashion trends as in the Japanese market. However, the apparel firms' production shift offshore has, on the other hand, threatened the existence of the domestic SME apparel manufacturers that have traditionally served their apparel firms customers, now that QR is no longer the sustainable competitive advantage of domestic manufacturing. The purpose of this paper is to explore the levels of QR implementation, identifying the potential pitfalls and drawbacks of the current QR initiatives in the Japanese...

...as the Stroop effect. Studying this gives insight into the human mind. It can show how we handle interference across a number of different situations or how our automatic processes interact with and affect our controlled processes. The cause of the Stroop effect has been widely debated and researched over the years. Some researchers believe the cause is due to the fact that reading is such a well learned or even over learned process that it becomes automatic. When asked to identify ink colors of words reading the word causes distraction because reading is done much more often than naming ink colors. But where is the exact interference occurring in this process and why? It has been suggested that the interference occurs at the output or response stage as an individual struggles to express the correct color word from alternatives. Others believe the interference happens during encoding as an individual analyzes the word and is distracted from ink color. Still others would say it happens somewhere between the encoding and the output. All of these suggestions have various criticisms. The search for the correct answer to this phenomenon continues. Literature Review In an attempt to determine where the interference was taking place, Naish (1985) designed two experiments, the first to see if the interference occurred earlier than the output stage and the...

Satisfaction Survey Study

...submitted satisfaction surveys during the previous year and to see what the expected number of responses should be in comparison with our peers. Methodology From January to June, 100 patient satisfaction surveys were placed throughout our facility advising patients to take one. These surveys had return envelopes attached to them, without paid postage. One designated individual was responsible for maintaining these surveys so as we could determine the number of surveys that were taken. The surveys that were placed in our office were printed on gray paper.  Goal The goals of this study are to receive a comparable percentage of patient satisfaction survey responses in comparison with our facilities. Comparison/Benchmarks A 30% to 35% response rate is satisfactory according to a study, “Survey Response Rates and Overall Patient Satisfaction Scores,” published in the Journal of Nursing Care Quality 2003 Jul-Sept. And the Patient Survey Website June 2011 Article “What Does Patient Response Mean?”.  Results At the end of the 6 month period, January to June, there were 71 surveys remaining of the original 100 placed throughout our facility by which we determined that 39 surveys had been taken. We received only 6 surveys back during this time period. This is a response rate of 15% which is 20% lower than our benchmarks. In attempts to increase the number of patient satisfaction survey responses we are getting, beginning in June, we will have our “Patient Satisfaction Survey” available...
