...suburb with the hopes of adopting a baby and starting a family. Steven works as a Neurologist, while his husband Grant is a craftsman who builds beautiful stylized furniture made of wood and glass. Prior to coming out, and marrying Steven, Grant lived in a similar suburb with his ex-wife BRIANA (40ish, attractive, kind) and their only child EMMA (20, blunt, psych major). The couple attends a neighborhood barbecue where they meet their relatively nice, yet generic, suburbanite neighbors. The most notable however is LANGSTON (17, beautiful, mixed race, witty) who has a pet pig she walks like a dog. Although the couple is approved by the Department of Family Services for adoption, a visit to their CASE WORKER reveals that of the 14 countries...

Love & Relationships: Then & Now

...and 10 Things I Hate About You are two examples that show this progression. In the 1600’s, relationships and love were very rare, men just wanted to marry the most beautiful woman; whereas in modern times, relationships are portrayed as much more casual. In Shakespeare’s play, Taming of the Shrew, marriage is a very important concept, but it is very different than it is now. It is the fathers job to give away his daughters to the most wiling suitor, or the man who makes the best deal. If a suitor is interested in pursuing and marrying someone, the suitor will approach the daughter’s father and meet with him. They write a contract, willing things to the suitor and the father’s daughter for when the father dies, such as large proportions of land, or his home. If the daughter has multiple suitors, the father will choose who presented him with the best contract, not necessarily who loves his daughter the most or who his daughter wants to be with. Petruchio and Katharina’s marriage is a good example, because her father gives Katharina to Petruchio because of the contract Petruchio presented to him. Baptista, Katharina’s father, is in desperate need of giving his daughter to someone. Katharina is portrayed as a shrew and none of the men want to be with her; whereas, her sister, Bianca, is the lovely, sweet, beautiful one and all the men want to be with her....

...dressed in green and full of fun, but they are actually nasty beasts. They’re devious creatures always on the lookout for bright shiny objects. They lead an itinerant life searching for valuables. They are surprisingly small in stature but very strong. They exercise everyday through aquatic sports, such as swimming, water polo, etc., and are very concerned about their figures. One day, a leprechaun named Patrick happened upon the small town. His eyes gleamed at the riches that lay before him, and instantly he wanted it all. However, he knew that he would need a plan to loot and carry off all of the riches. So, he ambled into town. He told the town folks that he and his buddies placed a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. His conjecture was that they would fall for this prank. Then, he waited and sure enough, during the next sun-shower, a rainbow appeared in the sky. The towns’ people foolishly left their beautiful possessions and went running off in either direction to locate the pot of gold. With great celerity, Patrick quickly scooped up the most precious and beautiful objects and scurried off into the woods. He then exulted in the stupidity of the towns’ people and his wealth. When the towns’ people returned, they went into pandemonium for they knew...

St Patricks Day

...annually on 17 March to mark the death date of the most commonly recognized patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. It is also a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador. Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with establishing 300 churches in Ireland and of having converted most of the population to Christianity. Patrick was born in Great Britain to a wealthy Alderman and Christian. At 16 Patrick was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. During his captivity as a shepherd, he dedicated himself to his religion. He managed to escape captivity six years, later. Returning to England he believed it was his responsibility to bring Christianity to the Irish. St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in America in 1737, organized by the Irish Society of Boston, including a feast and religious service. This first celebration of the holiday in the colonies was largely to honour and celebrate the Irish culture that so many colonists had been separated from. St. Patrick's Day parades started in New York in 1762 by a group of Irish soldiers in the British military who marched down Broadway. This began the tradition of a military theme in the parade. Parades and wearing green have always been a traditional part of St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Believe it or not, the color of St. Patrick was not actually green, but blue! In the 19th century, however, green became used as a symbol for Ireland...

Sexual Relationships with Professionals

...sexually suggestive behavior such as sexual humor or suggestive remarks. Sometimes, people ignore the fact that touching is not having sexual intimacy but the truth is that it’s critical sexual act. For example, Megan is a beautiful young woman who has started counseling due to her substance abuse problem. Her counselor, Dr. Patrick, is a very attractive man who has been there for Megan every time she needs support after having some temptations with alcohol. After a few months of counseling, Megan got the professional’s phone number for emergencies. Megan started frequently calling Dr. Patrick on the phone, even though her calls are not about her addiction problems. They started a friendship without noticing and they get to know each other more intimately. Without realizing what was happening, Megan and Dr. Patrick were having more than a friendship. They started dating even though they continued meeting at the clinic for Megan’s therapy. They had a normal intimate relationship as any other couple, although they kept having a therapist-patient relationship. This case scenario is very harmful for the patient because she has been going to therapy because of a substance abuse problem. Maybe, Megan drinks because she is hurting, unhappy, frightened, or confused and Dr. Patrick could be taking advantage of Megan’s trust and vulnerability. Professional boundaries are integral for a good professional-client relationship. For that reason, it is very important never to...

The Ash

...From the Writer When I first read The Picture of Dorian Gray, what struck me most, and what inspired me to write my essay, was the irony that Dorian exhibited in his life. In pursuing aestheticism—a philosophy based in the simplistic beauty of things—the pursuer may, in the end and without notice, emerge uglier than ever before. Dorian, the once wide-eyed innocent, buckles and caves in to depravity while practicing an aesthetic lifestyle, despite the beauty that such a life idea claims. I began to wonder what Oscar Wilde intended to convey with his portrayal of the Aesthetic Movement incarnate and its often harsh consequences, especially given the well-documented involvement of Wilde in promoting aestheticism in his contemporary society. The juxtaposition of Wilde’s support for the Aesthetic Movement with Dorian’s corruption at the hands of it provided a great jumping-off point and a lingering question with which to begin an essay. What exactly is Wilde’s view of aestheticism when one bears in mind the story of Dorian Gray? In writing my essay, I realized Wilde’s outlook is not as straightforward as it may first appear. Throughout the writing process, a difficult task I faced was to encapsulate the aesthetic position when the philosophy often meant different things to different people. In researching the movement, I found that the moral philosophies of various proponents of aestheticism often varied and, thus, it became difficult to nail down the aesthetic tenets and apply them...
