Learning. Does anyone really want to do it , or is it just something one must do regardless of how one may feel? When does learning actually begin, at birth, in the teen years or is it even a stage at all, does it ever even end. Regardless of what thoughts you may have, we all go to school and are told to sit and absorb what is being presented.If children are really learning is the question and they give multiple tests for proof. Should we be determined based on our grades?.

Does passing children with high scores really prove that they’ll do better in life or have a bigger home? Paul Tough author of “How Children Succeed”feels so.He collected series of data showing tests that prove that his statements can be true.Predictably, the kids who did do better on the cognitive-skills tests were making more money later on in their lives.Carmen Segal conducted a series of experiments in 2006, One pool was from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth(NLSY). Segal noticed that participants who didn't graduate from college were “ Every bit as reliable a predictor of their adult wages as their cognitive-test scores. This shows us that the applicants who took the test and scored high made it farther in life and receiving better pay. Even though the stated applicants didn’t attend college, their IQ scores were still high and it showed that they were motivated. We can see this because half of the applicants who scored high took the test as practice, not towards their grade. They put their complete effort into doing so allowing them to score higher. In the long run it proved that if you're motivated in every single thing that you do, even if it doesn't benefit you right away, or at all, that you’ll succeed. Tough allowed us to see that in a simple coding test that didn't interest the applicants at all or assist them in anyway , determine what kind of adult they would be as well as their incomes. The coding test that Tough describes is a chart where you just had to find the right number from the key above and then check that box (1C, 2A, 3C, etc.) The high scorers on the coding test were earning thousands of dollars more than the low scorers. This shows us that when students were under the impression of a test they gave it their all and obviously did well leading them to better pay.

Tough asked a question in his articles “Does the modern American labor market really put such a high value on being able to compare mindless lists of words and numbers?”. No they don't but that wasn't the point the Tough was trying to convey, He wanted to show us that if you strive to succeed at any situation you do, that you'll benefit from it in one way or another.

Tough’s view on the children with the M&M’s, could show us another way he proved to portray his point. The high IQ group who were offered M&M’s for every answer they got correct didn’t increase much because they had given their all in the first try, leaving them no extra room to improve for a prize. The lower IQ score on the other hand increased a tremendous amount because they weren't motivated or focused enough , and having a short term goal pushed them to receive it.This tells us that they’re some people in the world that cannot see benefits of really trying if it isn't in front of them, no matter what they've been told or the people they see in life they are just oblivious to that fact. For example when Geoffrey Canada bribed students with things such as “ High school students can earn up to $120 a month and younger kids earn trips to places such as France. “ The attendance or graduation rate didn’t increase according to Gary Reubentsuin who got his source from the New York State report cards, on his interview with Mr.Canada.Gary wrote: “So the 62 graduates in 2012 had been the 97 6th graders in 2006. This does not represent a 0% dropout rate, as Canada implied to John Legend, but a 36% drop out rate.” The graduation rate is not 100%, as Canada claimed, but 64%. With offers such as the ones Canada implied didn't change many paths.You just cannot make someone walk if they aren't ready to crawl.

Just from a test or two making you think that you won’t make a lot of money or that you won’t have as good of a job is plain ridiculous. Why should a test dictate your whole life and career? A set of questions doesn't determine your thinking capability or your ambition. A set of questions doesn't determine your intelligence just like a degree doesn't give you a job. Percentage from the U.S Bureau of the Census, 2010 American Community Survey shows that, “In 2010, only 62 percent of U.S. college graduates had a job that required a college degree.” From this fact you cannot tell me that having a degree proves that you’re smarter in anyway because just this shows that these graduates weren’t seen in that perspective from employers.

Just because you didn't strive to score a hundred on a test that doesn't affect you mean that you aren't intelligent. Yes Tough points that out but he doesn't point out that it’s only one test and if you could've taken it on a different day or different point in your life if it would change your self being. You could’ve been confused with the topic or just didn't push through because you recently suffered a trauma. Those exact reasons should let you see that it doesn’t determine who you are because you aren’t always confused , and if you’re doing something towards your goal/career you’ll put a hundred percent and stay motivated.
