...Penelope is a character who is described as faithful, patient and calculates. She is the wife of Odysseus, who exemplifies a strong woman that is mortal. Penelope’s loyalty can been seen through out “The Odyssey,’” this is displayed through her ability to wait twenty years for her husband without being given any evidence to be hopeful. In addition, she remains loyal although she has many suiters interested in her she never gives in. Similarly, another characteristics she displays is being clever and calculated, she knew how to put a man to the test. ...Penelope is Odysseus’s wife. Odysseus is Penelope’s husband. They are similar and different in many ways. Penelope is also a daughter of Icarius of Sparta and the nymph Periboea and the mother of Telemachus. Odysseus is also the father of Telemachus, and the son of Laertes and Anticleia, and as well a knight who was apart of the Trojan War. Periboea hid her infant daughter as soon as she was born, knowing that Icarius had wanted a son. As soon as Icarius discovered the baby girl, he threw her into the sea to drown. However, a family of ducks rescued her. Seeing this as an omen, Icarius named the child Penelope (after the Greek word for "duck") and raised her as his favorite child. When Penelope reached womanhood, Odysseus asked for her hand in marriage. Although to part...

...Penelope: The Strongest of All Although Homer’s The Odyssey portrays the brave adventures of Odysseus, his wife, Penelope is a brave and clever hero in her own patient and loyal ways. Like Odysseus, Penelope keeps her cool in scary situations, and uses her bravery and wits to find a way out of it. When the suitors invaded her own home during Odysseus’s disappearance, Penelope kept her bravery and outsmarted them multiple times. They all wanted to steal Odysseus's life in his kingdom along with his wife, but they didn't know that she was stronger than they thought. Penelope tricked them by promising them that she would choose one of them to marry once she had finished Odysseus's death shroud, but what they didn't know was that...

...The Odyssey, written by Homer, is a series of poems that describe the heroics of Odysseus following the events of The Iliad. Throughout the books, there are many characters who show the features of a hero, who is someone who overcomes an impossible task or foe, even themselves, and can be occasionally given recognition for their feats. Two characteristics that a great hero and a great leader need are caution and cunning, and none show these better than Penelope and Odysseus. Penelope shows caution and Odysseus shows cunningness, who show these traits the best, which shows that great leaders need to be cautious and cunning. Caution, as shown by Penelope, illustrates the concept that great heroes need to be cautious. In book twenty-three, lines 94-100, Penelope is in distress, trying to think of how to approach the stranger who...

...Have you ever read a superhero book? The superhero is always a strong guy with big muscles right? Well I think in Homer’s the Odyssey, Penelope is the true hero. She is the true hero because, she waits 20 years for Odysseus, she tricks her suitors into thinking she’s doing a blanket for about two months, and she makes a challenge to string a bow and arrow, and shoot it through 12 axes. One of the reasons I think Penelope is a hero is because for 20 years she waits for Odysseus dealing with intense sadness and depression, my reasoning behind this is that from the book Eumaeus the Swineherd said, “Always with her the wretched nights and days also waste her away with her weeping.” Another example that she deals with sadness and depression is that after her father left, her own son, Telemachos, sea sets sail to find his father without telling her. For a while she lost both the men she loves so dearly. The last example of her going through her depression is that at one point she prayed to the god Artemis, asking him why he just doesn’t take her life right now. That is one of the reasons I think she a hero....

...Malala Yousafzai and Penelope have many things in common, but chiefly their dedication and great intelligence shine through. In The Odyssey by Homer, there are many times where the suitors try courting penelope, but every single time she refuses them for twenty years until Odysseus comes back home (Homer 16:420). Her dedication to remaining loyal to her husband is astounding. Correspondingly, even after getting shot in the head for fighting for women’s education, Malala Yousafzai, “appeared in a video announcing that she was taking her campaign for girl’s education global (Baker 1). Most people would be silenced by a bullet to the head, but not Malala Yousafzai. She continued her campaign and took it to an even larger scale which is something...

For example, my strengths include: Competition, Significance, Achiever, Futuristic, and Focus. Throughout our study of Greek culture, especially in The Odyssey, these are very common traits. These are traits commonly seen in athletes, warriors, and leaders such as Odysseus. My vase includes images such as those, along with images that connect to The Odyssey and my own life. Focus: Lens & Penelope While creating my vase, I incorporated both Greek culture and some modern-day styles. For example, I chose to incorporate a camera lens...

...Although “The Odyssey” by the Greek poet Homer is considerably an epic quest of a Odysseus’s lionhearted adventure, Penelope played an incredibly large role in Odysseus’ success demonstrated in her motherly ways, faith, and wit. Motherly figures are consistent throughout “The Odyssey,” and are essentially viewed as pitiful beings, full of melancholy, rather than true “supporters" of their sons and husbands in long periods of absence, due to military needs or personal quests. In some illustrations, mothers are depicted as weak without a steady male figure to guide them. However, this role is broken through the perceived character of Penelope. Due to the fact that Telemachos was incredibly young when Odysseus was drafted, he is doubtful that...

...The Odyssey: Prompt Six Loyalty is a quality that’s earned through trust and love. It can be created from a relationship or acts of kindness and friendship. All of these types of loyalty are shown in The Odyssey, but the one that stands out the most is between Odysseus and Penelope. Throughout the stories they both long to be together, even when tempted to be unfaithful. In The Odyssey, Homer reveals the theme of loyalty using character’s actions and emotions; this becomes clear when Odysseus is determined to get home to his family. First of all, for twenty years Odysseus is away from his wife, Penelope, but throughout that time he is dedicated to her. When he is tempted with a beautiful woman, all he wants is to go home, “Though you wanted her forever,...

...Gender role in The Odyssey, specifically focusing on the women's role and how women's treatment by men can be indicated as sexist. They are usually identified by their looks and treated based on how their physical appearance is, and whether they have power over any men. She makes it clear that throughout Odysseus’ journey to the underworld, he spots and gets a glimpse of different variety of women. She says that throughout the Odyssey, they do not state anything about the women’s accomplishments in their lifetime, but only about their important son's, good looks and pleasingness, and their affairs with gods. She also talks about how women are known for their action and activity towards their sons and husbands, but never for the action and deeds of their own, or how they are, nor what accomplishments they did for themselves. Helene states that it seems in the book Odyssey, the only achievements women could achieve was being pretty and attractive to they eyes of the men. She proves throughout her paper that even Homer made it sound as...

...As we are coming to the end of the Odyssey, Homer explains to the reader how Odyssey reestablishes his relationships with his son and wife. Because Odysseus left on a journey when Telemachus was just a baby, Telemachus’ relationship with his father almost does not exist until Odysseus returns home. It is clear that Telemachus has a lot of love and dedication for his father as he is overjoyed to see his father. He cried for a long time. Odyssey, on the other hand, seems calm and has a much more serious reaction when meeting his son for the first time in quite a while. The idea of a father and son relationships in general is an important concept in The Odyssey. We can see that Telemachus grows from a powerless child who will not take responsibility...

...A Women's Role in The Odyssey "So by day she'd weave at her great and growing web- / by night, by the light of the torches set beside her, / she would unravel all she'd done.", stated Antinous in book two on page 21 of The Odyssey. By saying this Homer, the author of this epic poem, shows that women used their wits to out smart men. Women mortal and immortal show great influence over the men in the poem. The women not only seduced and guided the men in The Odyssey they were also over looked and forgotten. The Odyssey is mainly describing a mans long journey home after the Trojan War, but women play an important role in the story. Different roles women present in The Odyssey can be explained by looking at Athena, Calypso, Circe, and Penelope. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, used her knowledge and abilities to guide Odysseus. Throughout all of The Odyssey Athena majorly impacts Odysseus and his son, Telemachus. In the book one of The Odyssey, with Zeus' consent Athena disguised herself as Mentes, one of Odysseus' old friends and seeks out Telemachus....

...Cowardliness of Penelope In the epic tradition, as in the Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is a Homeric leader who goes to the war and stay at an exotic land for twenty years. There is a woman behind him – Penelope, who is the loyal wife of Odysseus and the mother of Telemachus. She is a cunning, wise woman that undergoes the situations happen to her during the absence of Odysseus. In The Odyssey, Penelope has not seen her husband Odysseus for twenty years, and, mean while, she suffers the pressure from suitors who are trying to replace the position of Odysseus. In fact, Penelope is a woman with argumentative and complex characteristics – her wisdom and cowardliness. Her wisdom is illustrated when she delays those traitors while her husband is presumed death “It’s been three year no, almost four, since she’s been toying with our affections. She encourages each man, leading us on, sending messages. But her mind is set elsewhere” (Odyssey, p.345). Even though Penelope’ wisdom confirms her as a strong character, but her instinctive cowardliness has nevertheless compromised her wisdom. Since Odysseus has not returned from the war for so long time and presumed death, those suitors want to get her remarried and occupy Odysseus’s property. Penelope lacks the power and familial protections to help her driving those suitors away from her house, where her weakness was gradually shown out. The scene that Penelope feels very bad about the content of a song that Phemius, a bard, is singing...
