“The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:18, ESV). Since the beginning mankind was created into this world, he/she has had a need for companionship, for a soul that is intertwined with his/her own. Sharing of a special bond, a gift from GOD. Unfortunately, in America today, the sanctity of marriage has become diluted and slowly has lost its meaning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), three out of six marriages end in divorce resulting in a 50 percent divorce rate. What causes two people, who proclaimed to love one another forever, vowing to cherish one another for all eternity, to just give up? Developing an understanding of conflicts experienced in interpersonal relationships, and the impact/strain it can have on a marriage is the first step to recovering a failing marriage. This conflict generally arises from both environmental factors and internal factors within the family unit itself. An example of environmental factors would be getting laid off from a job, or having to move due to employment. Internal factors could be sickness or the inability to reach a compromise with one another’s wants. Systems theory states that it is during these conflicts that one must work to achieve resolution within the conflict. This resolution results in homeostasis, or “normalcy” and prevents the conflict from escalating to a point to where there is no chance for resolution. Both parties should compromise and collaborate on solutions to conflicts in order to achieve a peaceful outcome that is beneficial to both parties involved. Within a relationship, there will always be new conflicts arising that will test the confrontation management skills of a couple. It is these conflicts and how they are resolved, that will determine if the marriage will become stronger or end in
