...McDonalds Influences and Project Management In any organization there will be many influences that impact on the way that the firm operates and the way that they undertake operations and manage projects are influences by these factors. Looking at a large firm, such as McDonalds there are many internal and external factors. McDonalds is operating in a complex environment with a number of different legal, social and economic influences. McDonalds has to comply with a range of local laws for each of the environments in which they are operating, these include labour laws, health and safety as well as retail and food safety laws. The firm has used the legal tools available to protect itself aggressively, but this has not always been effective, the well known McLibel in which the company perused a case against a very small amount of individuals and gained much negative publicity (Guttenplan, 1996). This type of publicity will always have a negative effect as t appears to disregard the personality of the individual person (Hooley et al, 2004). Even though McDonalds won the case they lost the fight for public opinion (Europe Intelligence Wire, 2004). The presence of social and cultural influences on many business are likely to have a major impact, this represents the attitudes and perceptions that individuals may have of industries as a whole, as well as on potential individual companies, especially where there are Lord organization such as McDonald's. One of the major changes...

...Schedule Risk Schedule risk is the risk that the project takes longer than scheduled. It can lead to cost risks, as longer projects always cost more, and to performance risk, if the project is completed too late to perform its intended tasks fully. Apart from the cost estimation and resource allocation used in CPM, most of the techniques used in quantitative cost risk analysis are different from those used in schedule risk analysis. The earliest technique used for schedule risk analysis was the Gantt chart, developed by Henry Gantt in 1917. A Gantt chart gives a graphical summary of the progress of a number of project activities by listing each activity vertically on a sheet of paper, representing the start and duration of each task by a horizontal line and then representing the current time by a vertical line. This makes it easy to see where each activity should be and to show its current status. You can read more about Gantt charts on Wikipedia. Many tasks require that prior tasks are completed before they can be initiated, but unfortunately, Gantt charts are not a good method of showing theinterrelationship between tasks, so computers must be used to set up and maintain the network of tasks. One commonly-used technique is Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) which uses a detailed diagram of all anticipated tasks in a project, organised into a network to represent the dependence of each task on those that must precede it. PERT can be used to analyse the tasks involved...

...Management analysis According to Project Management Institute (2012), Project Management is when an individual applies the knowledge, techniques, and skills to accomplish a project effectively and efficiently with an ultimate goal in mind. The goal of project management would be to make sure that the project is done in a timely manner, and under or right at budget. A project manager’s also has to understand scheduling, and how to head off any critical paths that may come in the way. And the best way to do that is by tracking information about the project on charts. The best charts to use to track information on a huge project would be the PERT and Gantt charts. According to The Constructor (2012), PERT stands for Program Evaluation and Review Technique. The PERT chart shows important information about the project. The chart is graph that has drawings on it that represent the task on the project. The chart below is an example of a PERT chart. In this PERT chart you will see that there are square nodes which represent the different task that will take place in the project. Whether the project is big or small you can you can use this chart to track your progress. McCarthy Construction is a company that thrives on tight schedules, and...

...Using the data in Appendix D, analyse the possible consequences for Roberts Media plc if activity ‘G’ (equipment installed) and activity ‘E’ (design marketing campaign) are both delayed by four weeks. Critical path analysis is the mathematical network analysis technique of planning complex working procedures with reference to the critical path of each alternative system. One possible consequence is that there will be a four week delay for activity ‘G’. This will therefore lead to the launch taking 25 weeks instead of the originally planned target of it taking 24 weeks. This delay will result in the business failing to meet its targeted launch with London fashion week. This could therefore result in the business failing to receive publicity and advertisements linking to London fashion week preventing them from creating awareness thus resulting in a loss of potential customers. The loss of potential advertisement contracts also results in an additional loss of revenue. Another consequence is that Roberts Media plc will have lost a lot of potential customers and sales to its competitors. As stated in the case study the readership of the magazines has fallen in the past two years for reasons such as competition from cheaper rival magazines. By having activity ‘G’ and activity ‘E’ delayed, all the others will be as well as will the launch as previously mentioned. Roberts Media plc.’s competitors could gain customers quicker if they release their products beforehand as customers...

...Critical Path Analysis (CPA) is a project management tool that: • Sets out all the individual activities that make up a larger project. • Shows the order in which activities have to be undertaken. • Shows which activities can only take place once other activities have been completed. • Shows which activities can be undertaken simultaneously, thereby reducing the overall time taken to complete the whole project. • Shows when certain resources will be needed – for example, a crane to be hired for a building site. In order to construct a CPA, it is necessary to estimate the elapsed time for each activity – that is the time taken from commencement to completion. Then the CPA is drawn up based on dependencies such as: • The availability of labour and other resources • Lead times for delivery of materials and other services • Seasonal factors – such as dry weather required in a building project Once the CPA is drawn up, it is possible to see the CRITICAL PATH itself – this is a route through the CPA, which has no spare time (called ‘FLOAT’ or ‘slack’) in any of the activities. In other words, if there is any delay to any of the activities on the critical path, the whole project will be delayed unless the firm makes other changes to bring the project back on track. The total time along this critical path is also the minimum time in which the whole project can be completed. Some branches on the CPA may have FLOAT, which means that there is some spare time available...

The project is to start on September 24, 2013 and needs to be completed by October 25 2013 at the absolute latest using a standard working time. The list of activities that must be completed for the project are provided in Table 1. This table also identifies predecessor activities and estimated completion times. Part 1: Estimating and Scheduling Using the information in Table 1, complete the following: 1. Draw a PERT diagram for the sales commission system. Use Microsoft Project. Note that in MS Project, a PERT diagram is called a ‘Network diagram’. You create it automatically by generating a GANTT chart. You will need to use both the GANTT and PERT charts to manage the project schedule. When is the project currently scheduled to be completed? 2. The project should start on September 24, 2013. Identify the critical path in the system project. Consider that October 8 is a statutory holiday (Al Adha Holiday) and the project won’t be worked on that day. If it goes over that day, adjust your estimates to accommodate the statutory holiday. Part 2: Resourcing Using the PERT diagram developed above, act as the project manager and 1) Identify how many people will need to work on this project to ensure that the system is completed...

...SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN (PERT) AND (CPM) Critical Path Analysis and PERT are powerful tools that help you to schedule and manage complex projects. They were developed in the 1950s to control large defense projects, and have been used routinely since then. Program (Project) Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a project management tool used to schedule, organize, and coordinate tasks within a project. It is basically a method to analyze the tasks involved in completing a given project, especially the time needed to complete each task, and to identify the minimum time needed to complete the total project. The Critical Path Method or Critical Path Analysis, is a mathematically based algorithm for scheduling a set of project activities.Critical path method seeks to determine the longest possible continuous pathway taken from the initial event to the terminal event. It determines the total calendar time required for the project; and, therefore, any time delays along the critical path will delay the reaching of the terminal event by at least the same amount. PERT Networks and CPM Arrow Diagramsare similar in manyways and yet take paths that are often-different:Both aresystematic ways of analyzing and planningthe components ofa program or project. Both have been used extensively byindustry and government. CPM uses activity oriented network while PERT uses event oriented network. Furthermore durations of an activity may be estimated with a fair degree of accuracy...
