Throughout this semester I have worked with my small group on various tasks and activities in our communication class. I have really enjoyed working with my group and we have had success in these activities but like any group we have encountered some difficulties. The first concept that I used in this class with regards to my group was the characteristics of effective team members. There are multiple characteristics, which are included in being an effective team member, but I am going to talk about a few that I have used personally along with my teammates to help create a stronger bond between the group. The concepts that I used and that I think are the most important are openness and supportiveness. Every since our first group I have always …show more content…
The book states there are four listening styles: people oriented listeners, action oriented listeners, content oriented listeners and time oriented listeners. I think the listening style that I used with my group was split between people oriented listening and action oriented listening. I used people oriented listening when we finished all of our work or we were just passing time and talking to each and getting to know each other better. I think this is essential in having a good chemistry with your group as it helps the group bond and feel close to each other and instead of feeling like they are random people who I have to work with they felt more like friends when I used people oriented listening. I used action oriented listening when I was completing any of the group activities or tasks we had to do. I used this style more when we had something to do to earn points or compete with the other groups. This style was more suitable than people oriented listening as in these situations I think we all made sure that the activity or task was the first priority instead of talking about the conversations we were having before the activity. The final concept I am going to talk about is leadership. I think overall there was not a single leader in our group but we were all shared leaders of the group. There were times when I or another group member would put forward the first idea and we would immediately go along with it but that was only due to the fact that everyone agreed with the idea. I think the main reason we were all shared leaders was because we were all being graded on the same criteria and there was no one who was responsible for the group doing well like a manager in the office who is responsible for the employees performances.
