Background Personal Development For the second personal development exercise I chose 5 people that would be completely honest with their feedback so that I would be able use this feedback. This background section I put in is to describe how I know each person. The first that did this for me was Jaimie Ricker who is my fiancé and has no problem giving me constructive feedback. The second individual that did this was my best of 24 years Nick Linthicum who I grew up with and constantly have stayed in touch with. The third individual I chose was my sister because she has known me the longest besides Nick in my life. My boss of 6 years Kim Koch, completed the next one for me because my entire work experience has been with her. The last person that wrote feedback for me was Amanda Kutcher who has been a supervisor at McDonald’s since my first day there and I have worked with her so much over the past 6 years so she knows very well. For the first 3 assessments I copied and pasted from emails that were sent to me and the last 2 were typed up and given to me.

Part 1 Personal Development Exercise This exercise took me a little bit longer than I expected to complete because I don’t take a whole lot time to think about things I do well because I try to focus on things on I do poorly. But I do believe that one my strengths is that I am good with people and getting along with them and making them feel comfortable. At my current job I onboard new employees and I always want them to feel welcome and give them all the tools that they need to succeed. Another attribute is that I feel is a strength is that I am willing to give my best effort in any situation and never ask anyone to do a task I wouldn’t do myself. Also I do properly manage my time, I currently am working two jobs with a full-time class schedule and my personal life has quite a bit going on as well and balancing all of it is something I do well. During this current school year I have learned quite a bit about myself and have come to realize that everyone is busy but I have to make time for the people in my life that mean the most to me but also take that little bit of time for myself do ensure I perform at my best. The last strength I believe I have is being completely open and honest with everyone I meet in any situation. This though leads into the next topic of things I need to work on with interacting with others. Sometimes my honestly with other individuals comes off as being too blunt or simply rude, others though appreciate that honesty. It is though something I have recently become aware of and something I am working to improve on though I can find it difficult at times because I feel honest communication is the only way to do it. Though at my current workplace I have a tendency to just take over a situation without giving anyone else the chance to try and figure it out. Currently I am working on this and trying to have a line of communication on why we would do things differently and realizing there is more than one way to do a certain task. When it comes to leading to people at least at my current workplace I think people are willing to follow me because I do my best to respect and help them all in any way I can. Also as mentioned above I will always make sure that I know how to do a task I am asking of that team member and am willing to show them. Lastly the last piece of career advice for my current self is to simply get a handle or my nerves in certain situations. Whenever I am in class, job fair, or even during the Klar sessions I just get this incredible bout or nervousness and anxiety, I need to learn to take a deep breath and get more comfortable in those situations. If I can’t learn to do this I believe that it will hurt me in the future, but I will conquer it one way or another.

I’ve known Tyler for just about 6 years and I have learned so much from him. Tyler has numerous strengths. Tyler is a natural leader. People listen to him, which also shows that he is good at communication. He can relate to people of all ages and from all environments from his time and experience at McDonald’s. He is very driven to be the best at any project, job, or situation he is involved in. His work ethic is always his number one priority. It isn’t necessarily about impressing someone or being the best, but he definitely always does his best to make sure that he is recognized and known for his work. Which also goes for his self-discipline. When I looked up some examples of self-discipline I came up with, controls own behavior, self-motivated, prepared to work hard to achieve goals, sets own targets, avoids distractions, perseveres with difficult tasks and activities, does not procrastinate, continues with projects in the face of obstacles and challenges. Those examples to me describe Tyler 100%. Tyler is really good at staying calm. I’ve never seen him react poorly in a stressful situation. Tyler is also really good at not judging. He likes to see the best in people no matter the situation or the person. That is the number one thing that he has taught me, to not judge someone before I know anything about them. I think that something that Tyler could be working on is his confidence. He always tells me that I have no confidence, but he always puts himself down too. Tyler never accepts compliments without finding something negative to say about himself. Once he feels more confident in himself and everything that he is capable of, he will only succeed more. The fear of saying the wrong thing, or rambling on for 5 minutes too long when you meet someone of importance for the first time could stop. The more confidence he has in himself will only result in him being able to go further. I think that people are so willing to follow Tyler as a leader because he is intelligent and knowledgeable. Tyler has a way with people and it makes it so much easier for the message to get across to them. He is understanding and compassionate, even at times when he shouldn’t be. The one piece of career advice that I would give him is to continue doing what he does best, which is to never stop striving to be the very best of himself. He is always doing everything he can in school, work, family, and relationships to be the very best of himself. I just wish that the confidence that I know he has somewhere would show and give him the extra boost that I know he needs.

Tyler Miller has many strengths, but there is one that I do not see in many people. Tyler’s quest towards his Bachelors is very different than what the norm is. There are a lot of negative stereotypes, like graduating at an older age or working at McDonalds, which are associated with his educational course. But his greatest strength is taking that adversity and transforming it into motivation. Life does not pull punches and everyone gets knocked down from time to time. I believe that every time life throws that vicious right hook, Tyler takes it and comes back stronger. Very few people take their faults and mistakes from the past and use them to fuel their relentless motivation toward life improvement like Tyler does. That strength is something absent in most people and I aspire to retain.
Like already mentioned, Tyler is exceptional at taking negatives and seeing the positives in them. The same is true with situations involved with other people. He is a highly motivational and positive person. His positive aura, regardless of current conditions, improves people around him. This is true regardless of whether the setting is a classroom, a work place, or a relaxed friend hangout. His ability to improve the mood and productivity of everyone around him is something that most people wish they could do.
When it comes to working with others, Tyler does an excellent job. His ability to keep everyone’s mood positive around him does have a downside. He is effective at informing individuals when they make mistakes, but sometimes his kindness and continual optimism stops him from being as disciplinarian-ish as a situation may call for. Most situations don’t require a strong, strict response so his “lets learn and move on” thought process is great. Just every once in a while disciplining mistakes is good and there are the sporadic occasions when Tyler is too nice.
It is no surprise that coworkers and friends gravitate towards him. His motivation and work ethic instantly set the tone for everyone that follows. More importantly, his hard work isn’t completed blindy. He always has objectives that accomplish an overall plan. Followers respect that and are willing to work hard around him because they know that Tyler’s ship is headed in a well-conceived direction. His ability to lead by example in an organized direction is what makes him a great leader and subsequently results in people following him.
If I could give Tyler any career advice, it would be to look past the horizon. He is a very special individual that countless companies/organizations would drool to hire. There are a handful of great career opportunities in the geographic area. Setting course for those and acquiring those are no easy task. But there are infinitely more incredible opportunities out yonder. To get what we may truly deserve, we can’t be afraid to step outside our comfort zone. Life is where we make it, not a point on a map.

One of Tyler’s strengths is his ability to communicate. He can carry on a conversation with almost anyone about any topic. When you talk to Tyler, you feel comfortable. He is friendly and easy to relate to. Another one of his strengths is being non-judgmental. He is able to listen to other people’s opinions, even if they are completely different from his own. It is important to be able be open-minded and respect others’ opinions.

Tyler is really good at problem solving. In difficult situations, Tyler is able to remain calm and find a solution to the problem. He is clever and creative which also helps his solve a problem. Having this ability is extremely helpful in any setting. Tyler is also really good at being optimistic. This is an important ability to have because being positive can help others become positive, which in turn can create a more positive environment.

People are willing to follow him because of his leadership skills. He is intelligent and knows what he is talking about. He is also a good leader because is able to be un-biased. He can step back and look at a situation and remain objective. What also makes him a good leader is how passionate he feels about things. He cares about his work, which can also help motivate others to care about what they are doing.

A piece of career advice I believe Tyler needs to hear is to be confident. Be confident when walking into an interview, or giving a speech. I know it’s easy to feel nervous in a new or stressful situation, but don’t let your nerves get the best of you. Don’t let your nerves ruin what could be a great opportunity for you. I know Tyler is an extremely intelligent and hardworking individual who will excel in any career he may choose.
