Designing the Experience

...Design in Interaction Design Abstract My thesis attempts to understand experience as it is relevant to interaction design. Based on the work of John Dewey, Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, and Richard Carlson, I identify two types of experience in user–product interactions: satisfying experiences and rich experiences. A satisfying experience is a process–driven act that is performed in a successful manner. A rich experience has a sense of immersive continuity and interaction, which may be made up of a series of satisfying experiences. Based on this definition, I identify a set of design principles with which to create products that evoke rich experiences. These principles are intended to encourage designers to think about how to create user–product interactions that suggest values and communicate meanings that enrich the quality of life. Narrative plays a key role in these design principles. Our series of life experiences form a narrative; the values that designers impart in an object form a narrative which is elaborated...

...SECRET LANGUAGE of • HOW LEADERS INSPIRE ACTION THROUGH NARRATIVE The LEADERSHIP STEPHEN DENNING John Wiley & Sons, Inc. More Praise for The Secret Language of Leadership “Out of the morass of strategies leaders are given to transform organizations, Denning plucks a powerful one—storytelling— and shows how and why it works.” —Dorothy Leonard, William J. Abernathy Professor of Business, Emerita, Harvard Business School, and author, Deep Smarts: How to Cultivate and Transfer Enduring Business Wisdom “The Secret Language of Leadership shows why narrative intelligence is central to transformational leadership and how to harness its power.” —Carol Pearson, director, James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, University of Maryland, and coauthor, The Hero and the Outlaw “The Secret Language of Leadership is not only the best analysis I have seen of how and why leaders succeed or fail, it’s highly readable, as well as downright practical. It should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in engaging a company with big ideas who understands that leaders live and die by the quality of what they say.” —Richard Stone, story analytics master, i.d.e.a.s “A primary role of leaders is to create and maintain meaning for their organizations. We leave the WWU parking lot, heading south on Milliken ave, past the multitude of temporary staffing agencies and warehouses and over the train tracks. We take another left at the stop light onto E Mission ave and on the right, I can see all of the ‘Wal-Mart’ and ‘Swift’ containers through the thin line of trees. Business Plan

...Executive Summary MARKETING PLAN PRODUCT CONCEPT Baby Go Round, Maternity and Children’s Resale Shop’s mission is to provide a place for expecting mothers and their families to buy and sell clean, safe, gently used clothing and other pregnancy/children related items. Baby Go Round is a resale shop that focuses their attention on maternity and children. Pregnancy and childhood go by so quickly who wants to pay full price for these items? Baby Go Round provides families with an alternative to purchasing maternity and children’s clothing and maternity and children’s items at retail price. It also provides an outlet for families to sell their slightly used maternity and children’s clothing and items to the store, providing additional disposable income for these families. Currently, resale shops in this area do not provide the market with both maternity and children’s resale, they mostly focus on just children. Parents will be able to start shopping at Baby Go Round as soon as they find out they are expecting and remain a loyal customer until their child is in their early tweens. Currently, those living in the chosen location, Geneva, Illinois, either have to visit multiple retail stores or a children’s resale store and shop online (like Craigslist) to purchase used maternity clothes. Baby Go Round’s maternity and children’s resale shop provides a cheaper, more convenient and safer way to do both. If a pregnant mother wanted to purchase maternity clothes and...

...book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves included—frequently malign or ignore. As we have considered our quandary, we have come face-to-face with the central paradox that characterizes the genre: Teaching manuals tend to be distant, mechanical, impersonal, and lifeless, when in fact good teaching is immediate, flexible, personal, and lively. In this manual, therefore, we have attempted to communicate to fellow teachers...
