...A Comparison of “Dog’s Death” and “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” Tammy McGee ENG 125: Introduction to Literature Instructor Jessica Dennis August 12, 2013 The theme I have chosen to write about is death and impermanence, and the two literary works I have chosen to compare and contrast are Dog’s Death by John Updike and Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas. How we are affected by death, and how we accept that it is inevitable seems to be a theme for many short stories and poems. Death brings a struggle between the dying and the family and friends of the dying. All the loved ones of the dying want them to do is fight, to encourage them to stay positive, even when there is no chance of survival. We want to be selfish and want to spend as much time as we can with them before they die. Just as the two poets in these poems do. In Dog’s Death by John Updike, the dog wants to lie down, to hide so she can die peacefully but the family rushes her to the vet to try and save her. And in Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas the father is being begged to fight against the inevitable death. I am going to show how loved ones want the dying to fight death, whereas the dying would like to come to peace with death and rest. ...finding the right words to ease someone’s pain is no easy feat. Now, imagine comforting a mom or dad, sister or brother, spouse or child of someone who intentionally took their own life. Not only does the family and friends of the suicide victim feel the shock of loss, but also they may feel that they failed the victim in some way, did not see the signs, and feel guilt that they should have seen this coming. Coupled with their own guilt, they may also shoulder the burden of the guilt of others, as society places blame on the survivors for not helping the victim deal with emotional or physical problems that may have led to the ultimate untimely death. As healthcare providers, it is important to not place blame, and to help the survivors find a way to deal with the loss, as well as the guilt. It is imperative for the healthcare provider or clinician know how to react when faced with this situation, as their role could have a lasting impact on those that have been left behind. However, in some families that is not the case. Some family members experience a completely different and most often, unwelcomed and inappropriate type of closeness called incest. The purpose of this study was to explore, appreciate, and describe their experiences using a phenomenological methodology. Narratives were collected from seven participants who have a parent diagnosed with PD and analyzed according to Colaizzi’s (1978) phenomenological data analysis method. Seven thematic clusters were identified and an exhaustive description is presented to summarize the essence of their lived experience. The study indicates a strong sense of essential positivism from the participants’ stories, and overall, it seems PD has brought some degree of biological, psychological, socially, and/or spiritual meaning to their lives that they may not have otherwise noticed or experienced. ...Diasporic Cross-Currents in Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost and Anita Rau Badami’s The Hero’s Walk HEIKE HÄRTING N HIS REVIEW of Anil’s Ghost, Todd Hoffmann describes Michael Ondaatje’s novel as a “mystery of identity” (449). Similarly, Aritha van Herk identifies “fear, unpredictability, secrecy, [and] loss” (44) as the central features of the novel and its female protagonist. Anil’s Ghost, van Herk argues, presents its readers with a “motiveless world” of terror in which “no identity is reliable, no theory waterproof” (45). Ondaatje’s novel tells the story of Anil Tessera, a Sri Lankan expatriate and forensic anthropologist working for a UN-affiliated human rights organization. Haunted by a strong sense of personal and cultural dislocation, Anil takes up an assignment in Sri Lanka, where she teams up with a local archeologist, Sarath Diyasena, to uncover evidence of the Sri Lankan government’s violations of human rights during the country’s period of acute civil war. Yet, by the end of the novel, Anil has lost the evidence that could have indicted the government and is forced to leave the country, carrying with her a feeling of guilt for her unwitting complicity in Sarath’s death. They work in relation with each other. Modernity functions as an economic and social tool to achieve some wealth, flexibility, and innovation for individuals and groups; Tradition functions, partly and at times largely, as a mythological state which produces the sensation of larger connectedness and stability in the face of shockingly massive social change over the last half-century. One might also say that Modernity is an economic force with social, cultural, and political correlatives; Tradition is a cultural force with social, economic, and political correlatives.
