My English Classes Journey Do you know anyone who was not a good writer and become an author after attending some writing classes? I born in Ethiopia, and I did not know how to write an essay before I came to The United States. When I was in my country, my English teachers gave me a good grade because I was one of the best writers according to my classmates. As soon as I came in U.S, I took a test at Montgomery college to get placed college level. the people who work in the test department placed me in ESL 2 because my result was low. In 2014 winter semester, I took ESL 2 and 3, and I took the test again. When I saw my result, I was happy because I pass ESL 4 and get placed AELW 920. After I register in that class, it was not hard for me, …show more content…
I always thing that I am going to climb Everest mountain when I thing starting an essay. In my previous writing classes, I always sat in front of the computer to start my essay without any outline. After I joined Prof. Decker’s class, I start outlining because I want to write a better essay. Indeed, in my pervious classes thesis sentences were not strong, so I followed the same sentence structure in ENGL 101A. For example, the thesis sentence in my Argumentative and Persuasion draft was not strong and contain some mistakes: “In the 20th and 21st centuries academic dishonesty become common at the college level because of the pressure to get scholarship, a family pressures, and a dream to have a better life” (page 1). Professor Decker gave me some comments to fix my sentence. Therefore, I revised my mistakes and fix it this way: “Academic dishonesty has become common at college intuition because of the pressure to get scholarships, to give family happiness, and pursue to have a better life” (page 1). Also, in my earlier classes I simply restate my thesis sentence when I conclude, and I used that path in ENGL 101A. In my Division or Analysis essay draft, I concluded, “The love of a family, the lesson that parents teach for their children, and the struggle that children make to succeed their dreams are the parts of the story that the author tried to transfer for the audiences” (page 3). I know that there is a diagnosis test at the begging of every semester. Even though I was ready to write my best when I got in Prof. Decker’s first class, I feel like someone who lost in a strange neighborhood. He gave us some topics to choose, but I could not write a good essay because I did not pick a good topic. He gave us a second chance to write the diagnosis essay, and I changed my topic, but I still could not have more ideas to write my essay. I know I have this problem because I did not grow up in The United States, and I did not speak and write English usual. I have been in this country for 2 and half years, and I know I improve my language a lot, but I have to work hard to improve more. When I asked Professor Decker who can I improve my critical thinking he told me I have to read more books, and I am reading more books after he gave me that
