As I entered the Langston University Police Department, I was a bit adamant about being there. I didn’t know what to expect, so I just went with the flow of things. Since I am a bit shy until you meet me, I went into the Langston University Police Department with a just stay quiet and listen mindset. I can honestly say, that was not the right mindset to have. The dispatchers, and all the officers welcomed me with opened arms. Since I am not really a talker, the officers did everything in their power to make me talk. I was forced to warm up and I did. In the criminal justice system, filing, taking notes, taking statements, and report writing are highly important. The criminal justice system was put into effect to protect our community and rehabilitate criminals. Officer Holland, who is now the Lieutenant at the Langston University Police Station was the one who really made my internship run smoothly. I could relate to him, and he gave me a lot of knowledge about the field. He is also a professor at the University of Central Oklahoma. He has also been in this field many years and he started from the bottom. One thing he would always say is you have to start somewhere. He gave me the brighter side of the criminal justice system. He has been everywhere in the criminal justice system, that’s why I believe I latched on to him. Academics is very important to him, and he tried to instill that into me. The one thing that we discussed, that was very interesting, was the three-strike law in California. We also discussed why Oklahoma doesn’t have that law, and if we should have it? I had discussed this law many times throughout my time in school, but he made me grasp it a lot better. The three-strike law legal definition is criminal statutes that mandate increased sentences for repeat offenders. In the state of California, this law led to many arrest and overcrowding.
