Positional Power, Trust, and Respect Trust and respect are two of the most important leadership attributes that can either make or break a leader. As a leader and a coach, wielding influence over those you lead is essential to the success of the process. You must show that you are ready to walk the talk and lead positively by example before the people under you can feel that you deserve their trust and respect thereby following your guidance. In the process of coaching Lisa, trust and respect between us was pivotal when it came to smoothing over and eradicating obstacles on the way. Trust and respect in the coaching relationship helped reduce the decision-making process thus ensuring that we could get over obstacles and challenges quickly …show more content…
To ensure that I had a strong engagement with Lisa, I set out to establish a personal connection right from the start. Establishing a personal connection ensured that I took true interest in her as an individual so as to properly understand her point of view. To accomplish this, I frequently asked her more personal and open-ended questions that elicit engagement and ensures that she will voice her concerns on what is important from her own perspective. Acknowledging that I have truly heard what Lisa has said is critical as it makes her feel more respected and so she will be increasingly willing to adopt new values and beliefs advocated through the coaching process.
