Personal Narrative: Safeway Grocery

Coming from the Northwest I have grown up knowing that Safeway groceries was the only place to go and gather everything that was on the grocery for that week. My parents have been members of the Safeway select program, which involved a points system which incorporated money spent with gallons of gas, ever since we had moved to the city of Spokane. I had known about Costco and Trader Joe’s but Safeway was the first choice, always. Mostly in part because of the gas rewards. Coming to Omaha I was taken aback by the fact that Safeway was unknown to the people of the Midwest. I found myself catching rides to Target to pick up the essentials and the occasional pack of Oreos. This came as a complete shock because at home places such as Target and …show more content…
Looking back on my first few experiences in Omaha in regards to food I realized I was experiencing what I had learned to be culture shock (Sobo). Safeway had been a small, yet important aspect in my routine back home. Migrating to Omaha I found out the hard way that I was somewhere new when I asked a fellow student, “Where is the nearest Safeway?” and got the most confusing look in return. While this might seem as a minute adjustment it took some while to adjust to the fact that Target was my new Safeway in the Midwest. Due to what I had experienced in my early months as a college student in the Midwest I took this assignment as a way to go out and find other ways this part of the country differs from my normality of the northwest in regards to the food market. I began asking numerous people within Kiewit Hall, including RA’s where I could a diverse networks of food distributors. Nina, an RA from the floor above me said, “SOHO is the place.” I soon came to find out that this place was South Omaha. Not …show more content…
However, the cups were sold in bulk rather than your expected single serving that you would see at Target or Jack and Ed’s, which was my first choice for noodles. Looking at the price I notices a notable difference with the cups from the Oriental Mart costing close to $1.50 more per serving. I assumed this was due to the authenticity of the food, and decided to purchase it anyway. Continuing down my list I began searching for apples. These were quite easy to spot because of the only produce area being located directly in the front of the market. Upon coming closer to this section I could assume that produce was not a big time sell because of the limited variety present. There were about three types of vegetables available, and apples were the only fruit for sale. Moving on, knowing there was no meat section, I searched through the single freezer aisle in search of chicken. Many of the frozen goods contained poultry, but I was unable to find chicken by itself. I was confused because I have had many Asian dishes which have involved chicken as a main ingredient. However due to the size of the market I understood how a full meat department was most likely not in the budget of the small establishment. It was quite easy to locate the candy. It occupied its own row which spanned from the front counter to the back
