The Lift
The thrill of skiing is immeasurable: the speed; the wind in your face; the snow in your boots; and the water in your eyes, however, every great skier has had falls. People break their bones, tear muscles, and even become paralyzed but the most dangerous, the scariest, most terrifying experience I have encountered wasn’t even on the hill itself.

The day of the ‘incident’, all of the school volunteers had been rewarded with a ski trip. At the time, I was in grade seven. In the ski lodge, I began putting my boots on, as my friends got their skis. “ So I was thinking” I began, “should we go up the hill with the ski lift or w—” I looked up to realize that I was talking to my own shadow. Sometimes, I feel he is the only one that listens. I had been abandoned. I got …show more content…
As the first group of chairs took the group ahead of us up the hill, we hurried to take our places. Naturally, I went to the far left side. As the lift came around I was getting ready, as always, when I realized that the chair had gotten softer than usual. As it began to elevate, time stopped. My rear began to slip as if the chair had been drenched with ice. With the jolt of the chair, I began to fly; at least, for a second. I heard a shout that blasted my eardrums; it was mine. I quickly spun around and held onto a leg when I saw that Hailie was behind me! I had, unknowingly, sat on her. She tried to hold me up. Due to the dreadfully slow rate of the lift, I had only gone up one meter, but it felt like holding on to a 45 story building. Suddenly, the ski lift stopped and I was left hanging… literally. Two men in blue started at me. They advanced until they were right under me. Tugging my skis off, they place me on one of the empty seats. Finally, they put my skis back on. Throughout the entire time, my biggest worry was having to get back in that humongous line… it may have also, slightly, dawned upon me that I could

Broken by Betrayal

...Broken by Betrayal Teenagers today face intense social issues that can have serious effects on a person’s mental and emotional health. Jay Asher in his novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, uses a unique narrative to confront the consequences of these issues, specifically the effects of betrayal. The betrayal of trusted friends and confidants, can dramatically effect an individual’s life. To begin, the continual betrayal Hannah Baker receives from those around her cripples her ability to trust new people and even to trust herself. Hannah reflects on her relationship with Courtney, “I wanted to be wrong about you, Courtney. I did. I wanted you to see it as me picking you up so we could go to a party together. And that is very different from me giving you a lift” (Asher, 101). Courtney betrays Hannah by using her for a ride to a party to maintain her image as the ‘nice, popular’ girl. Another incident of betrayal comes when Zach steals Hannah’s personal messages in Peer Communications class. Hannah says, “It might not seem like a big deal to you, Zach. But now, I hope you understand. My world was collapsing. I needed those notes. I needed any hope those notes might have offered” (Asher, 165). This quote emphasizes Hannah’s suffering at the loss of personal messages that could have provided much needed encouragement and hope. The accumulation of the betrayals that Hannah suffers means that Hannah cannot trust anyone and create meaningful relationships; as a result Hannah committed...

Augustine Confessions Analysis

...Nestled among the poignant narratives and lofty philosophical discussions in Augustine's Confessions lies a treasure of theological truths and propositions. Indeed, in Augustine's monumental and crowning work, he fuses both personal anecdotes and rational paradigms to formulate masterful theological doctrines, which have vastly influenced the Christian church for well over a millennium. Thus, for Augustine, a solid philosophical framework forms the basis of theology, which individual experience thence enhances and augments. Augustine's discussion of the Holy Spirit throughout the Confessions clearly demonstrates this intricate interplay. Any analysis of the Holy Spirit in Augustine's works cannot be complete without first embarking on...

Anecdotal Record

...Anecdotal Records The simplest form of direct observation is a brief narrative account of a specific incident called an anecdotal record. Often an anecdotal record is used to develop an understanding of a child’s behavior. Anecdotal records do not require charts or special settings. They can be recorded in any setting and require no special training. All you need is paper and a writing tool to record what happened in a factual, objective manner. The observation is open-ended, continuing until everything is witnessed. It is like a short story in that it has a beginning, middle, and end. The process of recording the incident requires a careful eye and quick pencil to capture all of the details. You will need to note who was involved, what happened, when it happened, and where it occurred. It needs to be done promptly and accurately. Figure 3-5 shows the contents of an anecdotal record. When you use the narrative form of observation, your eyes and ears act like a video camera. You will be recording pictures of children playing, learning, and interacting. During your observations, you will record how children communicate, both verbally and nonverbally. You will record how they look and what they do. Physical gestures and movements should be noted. You will also detail children’s interactions with people and materials. Record as many details as possible. Anecdotal Records Must Be Objective During the observation process...

...At some point in your education or your career you will be required to make a presentation about yourself or to write an autobiography as an assignment. Some people will welcome the opportunity to share their own personal experiences, while others will dread it. Whether you love this assignment or you hate it, you should start with the knowledge that your story is much more interesting than you probably realize. You may as well make the story enjoyable to your audience! An interesting story will get a better response from your audience and a better grade from a professor. These tips are intended to help you determine (perhaps to your surprise) how interesting your story really is! Adding Some Spice Your autobiography should contain the basic framework that any essay should have, like an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, a body containing several paragraphs, and a conclusion. But the trick is to make your life story an interesting narrative with a theme. So how do you determine your theme? You've probably heard the saying that diversity is the spice of life. While the saying is a little old and tired, the meaning holds true. Your job is to find out what makes your family or your experience spicy and build a narrative around that. In other words, you will research on your own life. Start your research by taking a close examination of your life and taking notes on the things that make you interesting. Ted Talk Rhetorical Analysis

...story, a patient who has been on high-cholesterol medication is prescribed an antidepressant medication after he tells his doctor that he has been feeling down and unhappy recently. Both medications are approved by the FDA and have been studied by manufacturers and doctors. However, the effects of the two drugs when taken together have not traditionally been studied, and most people are not aware of the side effects of mixing medications. Altman utilizes the narrative paradigm theory to build a personal approach to the audience. Narrative paradigm suggests that humans are storytellers and that people experience and understand the world as a series of narratives or stories. The basis of good reasons or arguments and stories help people make decisions. People choose which stories to believe based on two components, which are coherence and fidelity. Coherence refers to the degree to which a story makes sense. Fidelity is how well the story relates to people’s knowledge and experiences. The story told by Altman has both narrative coherence and fidelity. As the number of chronic health problems grows, more people are taking prescription drugs in combinations that have never been tested for safety. In fact, millions of American are in fact taking more than one prescription drug at a time. Some of them are amongst the audience members and can relate Altman’s story to their experiences. Therefore, the story lends great urgency to the audience and they become eager to learn about the problems...

Designing the Experience

...Csikszentmihalyi, and Richard Carlson, I identify two types of experience in user–product interactions: satisfying experiences and rich experiences. A satisfying experience is a process–driven act that is performed in a successful manner. A rich experience has a sense of immersive continuity and interaction, which may be made up of a series of satisfying experiences. Based on this definition, I identify a set of design principles with which to create products that evoke rich experiences. These principles are intended to encourage designers to think about how to create user–product interactions that suggest values and communicate meanings that enrich the quality of life. Narrative plays a key role in these design principles. Our series of life experiences form a narrative; the values that designers impart in an object form a narrative which is elaborated...

Assess the View That Religious Beliefs and Practices Are Changing to Reflect a New Era of Diversity and Choice. (33 Marks)

...increasing secular but forming new religions through choice and diversity. However, Voas and Crockett reject the claims Davie puts forward, explaining that if her thesis was to be true the British Social Attitudes survey from 1983 to 200 would show that belief in God is increasing, although it shows that not only is church attendance declining but also peoples belief in God. If Davie were right with new religions forming the surveys would've shown higher levels of belief. Bruce also interjects the view that if those who are religious are not willing to invest time into attending church, this must reflect the declining strength of their beliefs, thus the secularisation thesis must be somewhat accurate. Hervieu-Léger supports the theme of personal choice and believing without belonging. She believes that there has been a significant decline in institutional religion in Europe, with less people attending church in most countries. She says ‘cultural amnesia’ is partly to blame for this. Children used...

The Similarities And Differences Of Walt Whitman And Herman Melville's Poetry

...One’s view of poetry is extremely personal. With over fifty-five different formal styles of poetry to choose from (Kennedy & Gioia 681-717) no two individual’s tastes will coincide, the same can be said for poets. No one will argue that Walt Whitman and Herman Melville have vastly different techniques for chronicling the events they experienced. This is especially true for the author’s interpretations of events leading up to, throughout, and after the American Civil War. Although they approached their subject from the same vantage point, that of the Union or Northern Army, both author’s writing styles could not be more different. Melville and Whitman’s family history, personal experiences, professional interactions and literary notoriety all factor into their chosen poetic style and content. The following is a critical analysis of these similarities and differences using select works from Melville’s Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War and Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The list of recommended poems is not sufficient to adequately fulfill this requirement. For thoroughness, additional poems...

First Eagle by Hillerman

...The First Eagle – Analysis Adaptations An interesting aspect of Hillerman's fictions is the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural contexts in which they are set with their particular historical imperatives and consequences. The "Big Res" itself although sparsely populated by the standards of large urban enclaves is nevertheless home to a wide mix of Native American tribal entities including Navajo, Apache, Hopi, Ute, Zuni as well as Anglos and Hispanics of various national origins. Add to this cultural diversity such social elements as the disparity of power and wealth between the communities, and the opportunities for friction and conflict are significant. Therefore, a possible focus for discussions of this novel could be to examine the ways in which Hillerman ignores, acknowledges, utilizes, or highlights particular elements of the cultural and economic contexts in the service of his plot, characterization, and themes. Characters Hillerman populates the novel with a rich cast of characters whom he reveals through their speech, their actions, and their thoughts. He also describes their physical appearance so that readers form specific and distinguishing images of them. Jim Chee is portrayed as a "traditional" Navajo who has studied to become a hatathali, a traditional singer who can conduct traditional curing rituals; he is also a universityeducated (University of Arizona) lawman as is his former supervisor, now retired, Joe Leaphorn (Arizona State University). Assignment

...Job Safety Analysis CLOSE ALL What is a Job Safety Analysis? A job safety analysis (JSA) is a procedure which helps integrate accepted safety and health principles and practices into a particular task or job operation. In a JSA, each basic step of the job is to identify potential hazards and to recommend the safest way to do the job. Other terms used to describe this procedure are job hazard analysis (JHA) and job hazard breakdown. Some individuals prefer to expand the analysis into all aspects of the job, not just safety. This approach is known as total job analysis. Methodology is based on the idea that safety is an integral part of every job and not a separate entity. In this document, only health and safety aspects will be considered. The terms "job" and "task" are commonly used interchangeably to mean a specific work assignment, such as "operating a grinder," "using a pressurized water extinguisher," or "changing a flat tire." JSAs are not suitable for jobs defined too broadly, for example, "overhauling an engine"; or too narrowly, for example, "positioning car jack." What are the benefits of doing a Job Safety Analysis? One of the methods used in this example is to observe a worker actually perform the job. The major advantages of this method include that it does not rely on individual memory and that the process prompts recognition of hazards. For infrequently performed or new jobs, observation may not be practical. One approach is to have a group of experienced...
