Early Childhood Education Personal Statement

...Since a young age, I have wanted to pursue a career in the education field where I could help others. Being a positive impact on someone’s life is important to me; especially being a listening ear, a helping hand, a friend, and an educator as my teachers were for me. The glow of a child as they discover something new is extremely motivational. Participating in the Early Childhood Education program within Euclid and Mentor High School gave me hands on experience. Seeing children’s improving performances from the beginning of the year to the end had brought joy to my heart. In my opinion, education is the greatest impact you can put on someone’s life. In result of this, I am employed at Kiddie City Child Care Center in Euclid Ohio. On the other...

My personal philosophy has been shaped over time and it is: to impart fine morals and ideals in the children that I come into contact with; esteem each child and the families culture, beliefs, and race; make sure that the treatment I give to each child is fair to ensure that in each child the feeling of equality is developed; I will also have the community work with the families of the children and the educationists as a team; be a...

National Standards and Legislation

...Introduction Early learning standards are “standards that describe expectations for the learning and development of young children across the domains of: health and physical well-being, social and emotional well-being; approaches to learning; language development and symbol systems; and general knowledge about the world around them” (CCSSO, 2005). “In early childhood, the development of foundation skills (skills that lay the foundation for later learning), is just as imperative as mystery of content matter” (Bodrova, Leong, & Shore, 2004). It is essential that effective early learning standards emphasize significant developmentally appropriate content and outcomes are developed and reviewed through informed, inclusive processes, gain their effectiveness through implementation and assessment practices that support all children’s development in an ethical, appropriate way and require a foundation of support for early childhood programs, professionals and families (NAEYC& NAESC/SDE, 2003). Learning standards are intended to set the bar for student achievement and in the primary years, they can be crafted to apply brain and development research in their implementations (Schiller& Willis, 2008). The most comprehensive set of standards for quality education and care in early childhood is known as Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) (NAEYC, 2009). Early learning standards will connect teaching practice and curriculum to government and community guidelines. This...

Sustainability Education

...This essay will respond to the following statement: “It could be argued that when one thinks deeply about the future, this thinking provides possibilities to change behaviour in the present.”. With this in mind, the challenges and benefits of ecologising education now and for the future will be discussed further. We enjoy many of the beautiful landscapes of our vast land, but if we take a closer look, we begin to see that the Earth is truly in the midst of an environmental existential crisis. The average Australian’s ecological footprint is 7.8 global hectares per capita, which amounts to three Earths, to sustain the lifestyle we have at present (Network, 2012). This statement is rather confronting, as it prompts the thought of a possible diversion from the direction that humanity has followed in the past. It is a wakeup call to those that inhabit this planet, as this is a crucial time for making changes that are sustainable; one does not have the luxury of time for deep contemplation. Now is the time for acting. Potentially the most effective way to ensure that the resources, social and economic stability and the environment of the present day will be sustained for future generations is through educating present and future generations in conservation, sustainability and incorporating an ecological approach into our curriculum and pedagogy. The value of education for sustainability (EfS) is increased awareness of all who live on this land, communities, educational...

Social Competence

...In a study of children attending summer camp at age 10, Sroufe, Egeland, Carlson, and Collins (2005) found that securely attached children tended to have more friends and better social skills. Likewise, in a cross-sectional study using self-report data, 15-18- year-olds with good parental attachment had better social skills and, subsequently, better competence in developing friendships and romantic relationships (Engles, Finkenauer, Meeus, & Dekovic, 2005). Ainsworth found that the anxious-ambivalently attached are especially at-risk for later behavioral problems, including aggressive conduct. These data suggested it is vital for the one-third of children who do not develop a secure attachment as infants be provided opportunities to repair the original attachment relationship or construct some form of attachment outside the home, perhaps through interaction with a teacher or mentor. This paper will “BRIEFLY DESCRIBE HOW PARENTS AND TEACHERS CAN HELP TEACH SOCIAL COMPETENCE”. Erikson (1950) provided another important theory related to social competence; his psychosocial theory of personality development emphasized the interplay between the social and emotional domains. Erikson highlighted the importance of the person resolving a series of conflicts where interpersonal relationships play an important role. In infancy, the conflict is Trust versus Mistrust. Erikson hypothesized that an infant will develop trust through interaction with a warm, available, and responsive caregiver...

Culture

...in Early Care and Education Programs on a Native American Indian Reservation ‘‘The drum is considered the heartbeat of the community’’ Jennifer L. Gilliard1,3 and Rita A. Moore2 This article investigates how culture shapes instruction in three early care and education programs on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Interviews with eight early childhood teachers as well as classroom observations were conducted. The investigation is framed by the following research question: How does the culture of the family and community shape curriculum? Data analysis suggested that ongoing communication with parents and community about teaching within a culturally relevant context, building a sense of belongingness and community through ritual, and respecting children, families, and community were essential to defining the Native American Indian culture within these early learning programs. KEY WORDS: culture; in; tribal; early; education; programs. INTRODUCTION Instruction informed by children’s home and community culture is critical to supporting a sense of belongingness that ultimately impacts academic achievement (Banks, 2002; Osterman, 2000). American school populations are increasingly diversified with immigrants and English language learners; but American teachers are over 90% European American (Nieto, 2000). Early Childhood Education

...Early Childhood Research Quarterly 19 (2004) 375–397 The early childhood classroom observation measure Deborah Stipek∗ , Patricia Byler School of Education, Stanford University, 485 Lasuen Mall, Stanford, CA 94305-3096, USA Abstract This study assesses a new measure of early childhood classroom practice in 127 kindergarten- and first-grade classrooms. The measure was designed to be appropriate for classrooms serving children from the age of 4–7 years. It assesses the nature and quality of instruction as well as the social climate and management of the classroom. Two separate scales assess the degree to which constructivist, child-centered and the degree to which didactic, teachercentered instructional practices are implemented. Findings indicate that the measure produced reliable scores and meaningful, predictable associations were found between scores on the observation measure, on the one hand, and teachers’ self-reported practices, teaching goals, relationships with children, and perceptions of children’s ability to be self-directed learners, on the other. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. We thank them for their enthusiasm for the project and the many hours they spent searching the literature. The Early Childhood Education Research Team would also like to acknowledge the parents, primary school teachers, school principals, early childhood professionals and other support staff who were willing to provide their views on what they considered to be a successful transition to school. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the support and colleagueship provided by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, especially Pippa Procter, Gina Suntesic and Karen Weston.
