...The FSEU Director of Human Resources states several reasons why the State should not be able to privatize the Department of Transportation Information Systems management department. After analyzing this passage and applying critical thinking, I am able to breakdown the eleven steps used in the book “Asking the Right Questions. To an average thinker, there is ample information within this document that could be used to agree with Ms. Glenn’s’ point of view. To a critical thinker, the information and reasoning must be analyzed as to whether it is considered valid enough to call a “reason”. This document is a perceptive issue because it discusses whether or not something should be opposed, and if this matter is considered right or wrong. Just because this document is a perceptive issue, it does not mean that there are not descriptive assumptions associated. The first step in deciding to agree with the author’s argument is to locate the issue and then find the conclusion. The conclusion in any article, essay or document, is the premise to any other information provided. All facts and reasoning should be based off the conclusion. In finding the conclusion a critical thinker must ask what is Ms. Barbara Glenn trying to prove and what is the main issue? She stated “We must oppose to this act now or we do a disservice to our members and will regret it later.” ( ) this statement helps me narrow down the main issue which leads me to the conclusion. Ms. Glenn is stating a demand which...

...Application of Financial Statements: The Balance Sheet Tonesha Gadson Strayer University Financial Accounting (ACC 557) Professor Mary Johnson May 27th, 2012 Abstract Many people may ask why Financial Accounting is needed and is so prevalent in the business world and in personal living. What is its importance and activities involved? Why is it so crucial in commerce performance and individual responsibilities? Most significantly, which financial statements are of great magnitude in work and life? To the point, financial accounting is the process of summarizing financial data taken from an organization's accounting records and publishing in the form of annual (or more frequent) reports for the benefit of people outside the organization. This financial data are then entered into financial statements, which is based on the main accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities + Owners’ Equity. Financial statements show you the money and show you where a company’s money came from, where it went, and where it is now (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, 2007). With that said, there are four basic financial statements in calculating an organization’s and one’s own financial stability: -Balance Sheet -Income Statement -Cash Flow Statement -Statement of Owners’ Equity In this report, a major emphasis will be placed on the initial basic financial statements and how it’s applied in the business world and personal use-the Balance Sheet. Not only...

...required: The Personal Statement and the Study/Research Proposal. These essays serve very different but complementary purposes. Unless noted, the following information comes straight from the Fulbright Web site. THE PERSONAL STATEMENT (1 Page) The following information is applicable to both Study/Research and ETA applicants: The Personal Statement should be a narrative giving a picture of you as an individual. Remember, applicants are not interviewed on the national level. The Personal Statement is your opportunity to “talk” about yourself and to tell the committee more about how you came to this point in your life and where you see yourself in the future. There is no single “right way” to approach the Statement; rather candidates will consider what they think is important for people reviewing the application to know about them. The Statement can deal with your personal history, family background, influences on your intellectual development, the educational and cultural opportunities (or lack of them) to which you have been exposed, and the ways in which these experiences have affected you. Also, you may include your special interests and abilities, career plans, and life goals, etc. It should not be a recording of facts already listed on the application or an elaboration of your Statement of Grant Purpose. It is more of an autobiography, and specifically related to you and your aspirations. Adhere to the following format: • Statement length is limited...

...my arrival to the admissions counselor, Mrs. Bakutis. Shortly thereafter, a young lady emerged from a long hallway, smiling with an extended arm to greet me with a handshake as she introduced herself to me as Paneora Bakutis. As with most conversations, we began our interview with small talk. I complimented her on how nicely decorated the office was, as she went to prepare what looked like materials for our interview. We began our interview and I listened intently while Ms. Bakutis told me of all the wonderful opportunities Morris Graduate College has to offer. We discussed which program may work best for me, location, and financial aid. As we were closing out the interview Ms Bakutis opened a black folder shaped like an elegant envelope and pulled out papers that needed to be returned as soon as possible. She then alerted me that classes would begin on December 2nd, 2013, so it would be beneficial to me to get started as soon as possible. The final thing Ms. Bakutis told me as we wrapped up our meeting is that I would need to submit a personal statement along with two letters of recommendation. Whoa!!!!! At that moment everything stopped. I need to write a personal statement? Wow!!! I’ve never written a personal statement. Am I really ready for this? These were just some of the thoughts running through my mind. I went into panic mode as my mind started racing. Aaaww man, I have to write a paper to get into the Master’s Program? Shoot!! What would I write about? Will this...

Also, if you do not know what you want to get is, you won’t achieve any things; simply in other meaning, properly you will not achieve success by coincidence. Therefore, you have to determine what you want before creating your plan, which will lead us to talk about the mission and vision in order to achieve our goals. Over the last few years, there has been a substantial body of business research leading to the inescapable conclusion that those companies that specifically state where they are going and why do remarkably better than those who do not. Accordingly, organizations that do not take the time to develop missions are often ineffective. This paper describes the nature and importance of organizational vision and mission statements. Guidelines are presented for preparing vision statement and mission statements, with comparing and contrasting between vision and mission statements, supported by practical...

...a strong degree of irony and sarcasm to make his statements very clear: “Saying the behavior (of the people attending riots) is unjustifiable and unacceptable- Wow! Thanks guys! What a wonderful use of the planets oxygen resources. ” As the quote proves, Brand also uses these clear statements to show what his view on these riots is. As the style of the commentary goes, irony and sarcasm are not the only two supplements Brand uses. Another addition is his use of swear words and slang that makes the text, and Brands view, more clear: “no wonder they have their fucking hoods up” and “dopey ol’ Boris.” Brand has maybe also chosen to use this kind of language to make it easier for the lower social classes to understand, since his commentary is mainly directed towards them. Although, the receivers of this text is the general population of the UK as well. In addition, to make the commentary more personal, Brand uses personal pronouns like “I” and “we” to make it seem like he is talking personally to his receivers. Due to this personal aspect of the commentary, Brand wants the readers of the commentary to think about what could be done about the problem. He is, in other words trying to help the problem by making the riot problem an active subject through this personal aspect. Furthermore, it could be argued that Brand also has a slight use of the rhetorical strategies in his commentary. The fact that he has lived nearby the areas where the riots are taking place, makes him a semi reliable...

...A Critique on Mission Statements I. Introduction Upon entering into the market, a company does not necessarily have to have a mission statement; however, most successful companies achieve their objectives and goals through operating with and being founded upon a mission statement. The mission statement’s purpose is for companies to say much more about their business scope and purpose of ‘who they are, what it does, and why it exists’. Some companies project future growth in their mission statement; however, that projection can be stated in the company’s vision statement. This paper’s mission is to list and critique the mission statements of Spring Hill College and eight S&P 500 companies being: Google, Coca Cola, Avon, Walt Disney, Target, Wels Fargo, All state and Verizon Wireless. II. Spring Hill College’s Mission Statement Spring Hill College is a Jesuit Institution founded in 1830 by Michael Portier, Mobile’s first Catholic bishop. The mission of Spring Hill College a liberal arts and Jesuit College of the south reads: “Rooted in its Catholic heritage and continuing the 450-year-old Jesuit tradition of educational excellence, Spring Hill College forms students to become responsible leaders in service to others. We offer our students a thorough preparation for professional excellence; and we strive to awaken mind and spirit to the pursuit of truth and to the ever-deepening appreciation of the beauty of creation, the dignity of life, the demands...

...thought to his steps.” Proverbs 14:15 What Was He Thinking?! How many times have we said these words out loud as we watch reality home videos on television? You know the kind—the people who will do anything to get on TV! Like the guy that took his sled up onto the roof after a heavy snowfall. His bravado was showing all over as he stood on the roof, waving his sled for all to see. The stunt he intended to perform was to go sledding off of his roof and happily land on the deck below. No doubt he thought that all of that snow would help him make the perfect soft landing. Boy was he wrong! It was a brutal scene. He made a crash landing onto the deck. There was no more bravado. His body was crumpled in a heap in the midst of the splintered pieces of his sled. What was he thinking? His passion to attempt the impossible overshadowed his ability to think at all. We often have to set aside our passion to think clearly, to think critically, in order to make wise decisions. Critical Thinking It is a common practice we do every day, but we may never even be aware of it. For example, in the English language, how do you know whether the word “r-e-a-d” should be understood as a directive to “read a book,” or if it is to be understood as a past-tense word describing a moment that someone “had already read that book last week?” Critical thinking. Another example is with the word “conflict.” Do we have a “conflict” (i.e. a moment of tense disagreement) occurring between our children...

...Being a divorced Catholic, daughter, and friend I have seen what people, your fellow church parishioners, and family and friends will say about you, or about your divorce. Many of them will look down on you, but why should they when you were only trying to do right by your family, your children, and your fellow church parishioners, in the end. The main statement of sorts that you will hear is what about the children. Then you’ll hear questions about your personal judgment. Then religion and questioning your faith is thrown in there. This all hurts, but why do we as a society do this, why do we judge the people we love. We should be showing them love at this point instead of judgment during a hard and unwanted part in their life. This is when education is needed. More talking and not so much fighting is needed. Counseling would even be great to use. But then where do we draw the line in when divorce is not necessary. When there are children involved you will hear the statement “what about the children”. Yes this can be a problem. Your fellow parishioners will probably agree with the teachings of the church in that you’re tearing the family bond apart, and plaguing the society. People will probably mention something about it traumatizing the children. The fact is that many children have been through this, and although it is not an easy position to put them in many of them come out fine. Some of the brightest minds in the world today have come from divorced families....

...Bono Rhetorical Essay Rock Star and AIDS activist, Bono, in his commencement speech to the ’04 class of UPENN (entitled “Because We Can, We Must”) explains that since we are able to, we should find a cause and fight for it. Bono’s sole purpose is to inspire the UPENN graduates to make a difference in this world.. He adopts an informal tone in order to connect with and motivate his primary audience, the graduates, and to engage his secondary audience, the family (parents, grandparents, etc.) of the graduates. Bono begins his speech by explaining why he is at UPENN giving this speech and by sharing a personal anecdote (a pattern that is seen throughout his speech). His first sentence is a simple, declarative statement, “My name is Bono, and I am a rock star.” He opens with this kind of sentence to not only catch the attention of the audience, but to also establish his informal tone which is continued throughout the entire speech. His use of first person also makes the essay in entirety more relatable. While contemplating why someone like him was being honored with the title Doctor of Law and allowed to give a speech, Bono compares the situation to “[a] King Charles spaniels in little tartan sweats and hats” claiming “it’s not natural.” This self-deprecating statement is effective in establishing an informal tone because it sets Bono up to be seen as equal, to anyone sitting in there listening to him. He goes on to share a story about how he came to realize his passion...
