...Eng 101 Prof: Conners Essay 1, Draft 1 9/28/2015 Art is the beautiful thing created by human whatever it is messy or beautiful. People express their creative skill and imagination, and try to bewitch other people to their works. It is art. I watched the documentary that there is a man, Mr. Philippe Petit, walked on the wire that connected between towers at height a hundred and ten stories. He created art through his skill, bewitched everybody who saw his walk. His imagination and passion is almost impossible for other people. Is it art? Yes, tightrope walk between the Twin Tower is very creative and significant art. To create art, of course, people need to take time to build their skill. It didn’t happen over a night. What do you think of Mr.Petit’s tightrope walking? His creative skill and imagination are amazing. Mr. Petit spent most of the time to build his skill. He failed several times, but he never gave up. He went back and forth from his country to New York to create his art. He devoted all his efforts into it for his whole life. He has a great passion, perseverance. We could see it. It is a lot more difficult to create his art than any other arts. His imagination is different from any others. He did something that might be a dream for others. His creation isn’t normal. He bet his life to create his art. It is a signification art. As an artist, his job is to immerse his viewers into a world that he has built. In the book, ‘let the great world spin’, by Colum...

...In 2010, 335 out of 557 members of the French National Assembly voted to approve a bill that would ban the wearing of a traditional Islamic full veil in public. One member voted against the bill, and the other 221 members abstained from voting, so when the bill went to the Senate for a final vote, they already had a seemingly good grasp on the support level they would get if the law were passed. On April 9, 2011, however, a group of 61 protestors against the law had to be taken away in police vans and detained. While the majority of the French population is not affected by this law, a small group of Muslim women (and a pool of potential tourist) are. In 2009, French President, Nicholas Sarkozy made a statement claiming that religious face veils were “not welcome” in France because they goes against the country’s secular values ("French Senate Bans Burqa: Bill awaits President Nicholas Sarkozy’s signature" September 14, 2010). This essentially sparked the discussion and consideration of a banning on religious face veils, namely traditional Muslim burqas and niqabs. The rationale behind the banning is that it not only goes against the countries secular values of equality and dignity, but it also “imprisons women” and causes a safety issue for the citizens of the country (Ristici April 11, 2011). While freedom of religion and religious expression is practiced in France, the law under which the ban exists was passed with the reasoning that it made the nation’s citizen to feel threatened...

...Nicolas Poussin was born to Jean Poussin and Marie de Laisement on June 15, 1594 in Les Andesys, Normandy. His father was a nobleman who served in the Tavanes regiment under Kings Charles IX, Henry III, and Henry IV. Due to a lack of monarchial funds during this time, Jean had to cover the cost of his armor, horse, and other necessities which ultimately left him poor by the time he left the regiment. Although Nicolas’ family was considered impoverished nobility, Nicolas was educated in Latin, letters and the sciences. Nicolas was gifted in drawing and his gift was recognized by Quentin Varin while he visited Les Andesys in 1611 and 1612, ultimately Varin became his first teacher. In 1612 Nicolas left for Paris, while in Paris he studied anatomy,...

...the scene seems as if the movie is taking place in our world and next something terribly random happens, which would never happen in reality and it makes you question yourself what world this is in. Blurring the line between the two makes a movie harder to follow unless it’s consistent so it actually can make sense as long as your watching the movie. The Conan Brothers did an excellent job in doing so in Raising Arizona, the blurred line between reality and fantasy makes the movie more enjoyable. There are some scenes where they are so ridiculous you can’t help but laugh, without the use of this style it could have made the movie more serious and may have not been as comical. The Main character Herbert McDunnough (“Hi”) is played by Nicolas Cage who also narrates the entire film. Herbert is a criminal who sticks up grocery stores, he is married to a policewomen named Edwina McDunnough (“Ed”) played by Holly Hunter. The two quickly fall in love after she was taking mugshots of Herbert, the couple get married after Hi proposes to her after his most recent release from prison, the two move into a arizonan mobile home in the desert. They find out Ed is infertile and because of Hi’s criminal record they are unable to adopt. They resort to stealing a child from a locally famous furniture salesman who happens to have quints. Herbert believes anyone with five children wouldn't miss one. Nathan Arizona is the famous furniture salesman and father who puts up a hefty reward for the child's...

...Bad luck seems to linger amongst the Castorini family and Cammareri which seems to guide the movie into a romantic and uncanny comedy that takes place in New York City. Loretta Castorini believes that having gotten married at City Hall with her late husband, who has been hit by a bus and has passed away, cursed her. Now that Loretta’s current boyfriend has proposed, she has decided to marry him because he is nice and she would like to do it the correct way this time. Loretta seems to feel cursed again after the proposal because Johnny Cammareri got a phone call that his mother is now ill and has to leave. Before he left he gave Loretta a task, which was to invite him to the wedding and mend things between him and his younger brother Ronny Cammareri who works in a bakery. In this scene where Loretta confronts Ronny, there was so much emotion and finding out why him and his older brother do not get along was quite heart breaking. Ronny’s hand was maimed in the slicer because, Johnny asked him for some bread and wasn’t paying attention then Ronny’s girl at the time left him for another man because of the incident, Heartbroken, he decides to direct that rage on his brother because, it was Johnny’s fault. Ronny so, enraged for his brother taking “his life”, has an intense argument with Loretta. When things cool down, they both go up to his apartment to have a serious conversation. ...of the financial crisis, helping to foster international policies related to financial supervision and regulation and to strengthen global economic governance. As Chairman of the G-20 when France took over its presidency for the year 2011, she launched a wide-ranging work agenda on the reform of the international monetary system. In 2014, Lagarde was ranked the 5th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine. Lagarde has been involved in a couple of controversies through her career as a politician and as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. Christine Lagarde faced controversy after French judges said she appeared to be "personally" involved in a decision to approve a pay out to a friend of Nicolas Sarkozy when she was the finance minister. The head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, has been charged with "simple negligence" over her handling of a controversial €400m pay out to French business tycoon Bernard Tapie. ...The French love affair with London Will the British and the French ever understand each other? “Rosbifs” are well known as the discoverer of binge drinking, they are awful cook and hypocritical. On the other side of the Channel, the “Froggies” are uppity, unclean and always on strike. Both keep clichés going and issues of dispute are not lacking as the debate between Sarkozy and Cameron at one of the last European convention demonstrated. Jean Guiffan has supported in Histoire de l’anglophonie en France (2004) that almost 15% of the French people declared not to trust their neighbours across the Channel. On the other hand, they demonstrate respect for each other when they walked hand-in-hand through les Champs-Elysées to celebrate the centenary of the Entente Cordiale in 2004. Part of our common history would make us think that French and English people do not get along but the French community in London is one of the most extensive and well established around Great Britain. At first sight, some cultural differences may simply be too wide to bridge. It is not easy to ignore the ancient rivalry when the station of the Eurostar in London is called Waterloo. William the Conqueror, Jean of Arc, the Hundred Years’ War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the race for colonies: from the cradle, French and English people feed their hard feelings. For example, “Son of British” was a common insult in Middle Ages in France (Zeldin, 2002). Anglophobia was an heirloom handed down from generation...

...EXPLAIN HOW MARKETERS CAN INFLUENCE CONSUMERS AT EACH STAGE OF THE LOGICAL FLOW MODEL The logical flow model is a series of sequential steps that a consumer goes through when buying a product. The different steps are Problem recognition, external search, evaluation of alternatives, product choice and post purchase evaluation. Purchase decision differs therefore the amount of effort we put for each steps will differ accordingly, that’s why some of the steps are more important than others. Sometimes the decision making process is done automatically, this is when usually little information is needed, some other time purchase decision can be real hard, this usually for an important purchase like for example a house. Purchase decision is nowadays more and more difficult in view of ‘consumer hyperchoice’ (Solomon, Bamossy, Askegaard, Hogg, 2010). The logical flow model should be well studied by marketers so as to understand how consumers get the information, which criteria consumers use to make product or service choice, so that they can find more ways to influence the consumers. ‘companies [will] then develop products or services that emphasize the appropriate attributes, and marketers can tailor promotional strategies to deliver the types of information consumers are most likely to desire, via best channels, and in the most effective formats. ‘ (Solomon et al. 2010). This is not as easy as consumers simply do not go through all the steps of the logical flow, therefore it’s important...

...The saga of Italian reporter Giuliana Sgrena, held for a month by kidnappers in Iraq and then shot by U.S. soldiers as she made her escape, is just another bizarre chapter in the continuing story of how President Bush's invasion of Iraq has put America behind the international eight ball. The wounding of Ms. Sgrena and the killing of her rescuer, Italian intelligence agent Nicola Calipari, triggered massive mourning in Rome and intensified simmering anti-American sentiment in Italy, where public opposition to the invasion clashes with official government backing. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, one of Mr. Bush's staunchest supporters on the war, has asked the U.S. Embassy for an explanation of the affair, in which the car carrying Ms. Sgrena and Mr. Calipari to the Baghdad airport was fired upon as it drove - or sped - through a highway checkpoint. The initial U.S. explanation was that the car was bearing down on the checkpoint at high speed and that the U.S. troops, fearful of another suicide car bombing and uninformed by the Italians of the car's mission, took customary defensive action when the driver of the car ignored commands to stop. That may be true, and perhaps a failure of communication was at fault. But in the court of public opinion in Italy and much of Europe, the incident only rekindles hostility toward the Americans for starting a war that they have not yet been able to finish. The string of unintended consequences, from the liberation that...

...“The Family Man”: Film Essay by Kara Douglas Eng 101, section 20650 Dr. S. Federico April 19, 2010 “The Family Man”: Film Essay Do you like movies that show you how someone’s life could have been had they done things a different way? Are romantic comedies what peak your interest? Then The Family Man (2000) is the next movie you should watch. With the help of a magnificent cast, an uncomplicated plot, and captivating dialogue this movie is bound to become a classic. Directed by Brett Ratner, this movie follows in the footsteps of It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol. All of these films start with the main character living life one way, going back through time and seeing things in a different way which leaves them wanting to change the way they currently live their lives. Nicholas Cage and Téa Leoni’s characters complement each other fantastically. They really make you feel like the characters are truly in love. Cage, who plays Jack Campbell a president on Wall Street whose life completely changes in one night, really made the character feel like a real person. Viewers are able to believe his story. You actually see him coming into his own as this "new" person. His newfound responsibilities are quite humorous and easy to chuckle at. Jack deals with the problems a true family man would. Kate on the other hand, played by Leoni, is a pro-bono lawyer. She helps him get through the days, although she doesn’t know why he...

...A report in the Financial Times by John Thornhill leads with a remarkable quote from French President Nicolas Sarkozy warning the EU that he would block a proposed World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement on agriculture that would reduce European production incentives: In a world where there are 800m poor people who cannot satisfy their hunger and where a kid dies every 30 seconds from hunger, I will never accept a reduction in agricultural production on the altar of global liberalism. President Sarkozy is happy to have French farmers feed poor, hungry people in developing countries, but not happy to have those people improve their livelihoods by competing with French farmers on a level playing field. According to the OECD, between a quarter and a third of European Union farm receipts in recent years are the result of government subsidies and price support programs. Until the recent price spikes, one effect of the generous farm subsidies provided by Europe, the United States, Japan and other rich countries was to push down world prices, thereby depressing the incomes of farmers in countries that could not afford such largesse and reducing incentives for farmers in those countries to produce more domestically. France has been one of the strongest advocates of retaining these trade-distorting policies. With elections in the United States this fall and in India next year, the barely alive Doha Round of international trade negotiations is facing a long hiatus or even failure...

...France If there was one thing at the forefront of the minds of French voters, with the upcoming presidential election, it would be the current economic crisis focusing mainly on the failing euro. (Hey, Big Spender) This paper will summarize three articles that relate to the failing euro and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s role in this issue, part of a possible solution of getting it back on track in “Going Dutch” by Martin Feldstien, in the “The Failure of the Euro” from Foreign Affairs, “Hey, Big Spender” from The Economist, and Eduardo Cue, in the “Prospects Are Good for New Plan from Merkel,Sarkozy” from U.S. News and World Report. European nations are required to become integrated and unified as a whole to participate and enhance Europe’s role in world affairs abroad. One of the main ideas to begin this integration was the trial of creating a unified currency system that is now increasingly being recognized as a experiment that has vehemently failed. This failure was not an accident or the result of bureaucratic mismanagement but rather the inevitable consequences of imposing a single currency on a very heterogeneous group of countries. The adverse consequences of the failing euro on the European economies include the current debt crises, fragile conditions of numerous banks, high levels of unemployment, and large trade deficits. (Feldstein) Lately, worries about the stability of the euro reached a high as Italy's bond yield, indicative of the rate it would pay...
