A Worn Path

...by the symbolism surrounding the characters and the conflicts that are presented. “A Worn Path” is a character story told in a third-person point of view about an elderly, colored woman and her journey along a path she has taken many time before. Throughout the story Phoenix is involved in conflict by struggling against nature, social conditions and against her own physical circumstances. From the characters name alone we instantly envision a strong individual, the name implies a mythological creature that it said to be as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold plumage. It was said that only one phoenix existed at any one time with a life expectancy of at least 500 years. As the phoenix approached the end of life, it would build a nest, set fire to it and would die in fire to only rise from the ashes and be stronger. Ironically, Phoenix has her hair in a red rag which correlates with the scarlet plumage of the ancient bird. Her name combined with the first two paragraphs deliver a meticulous description of our character: Far out in the country there was an old Negro woman with her head tied in a red rag, coming along a path through the pinewoods. Her name was Phoenix Jackson. She was very old and small and she walked slowly in the dark pine shadows, moving a little from side to side in her steps, with the balanced heaviness and lightness of a pendulum in a grand-father clock. She carried a thin, small cane made from an umbrella, and with...

...Objective: This lab is to use the internet to find out about telescopes and observatories in the US. Show space images and what was found to be interesting about them and also give information on a space mission. The Otto Struve Telescope is a part of the McDonald Observatory. It is located in the Davis Mountains in West Texas. The Otto Struve is operated by University of Texas astronomers and graduate students; along with other researchers from other institutions. The telescope is 45tons, has a diameter of 19meters (82ft.), and it has a visible light. Not only did it contain the 82inch (2.1 meter) telescope, which is what this telescope was known as before its name, it housed living and sleeping quarters for the astronomers who used and a library – then it was the second largest in the world. Otto Struve made the discovery of Uranus’ fifth moon, Miranda; it also discovered Neptune’s second-largest moon, Neveid. The Star V838 Monocerotis, I found to be interesting because it was a simple cream like swirled color and just the middle was a distinct red spot. This Nebula stood out to me because my favorit color is green and this is a very bright green formation. The Mars Polar Lander/ Deep Space 2 had a mission target of landing on Mars. The mission ended on December 03, 1999. The instruments that the spacecraft carried were: 1. Mars volatiles and climate surveyor (MVACS) 2. Mars descent imager (MARDI) 3. Salado Inventors

...Nobody in the New World moved water more efficiently than the Salado Indians. The canals they built to sustain their large and complex agricultural society are still considered an engineering marvel. The Salado people lived around the Mesa area of Central Arizona for almost 1,500 years. They appeared around 1 CE and disappeared about 1450. Their agricultural society flourished around the middle Gila River and Salt River. This essay will be telling about size and durability of the canals, how the canals were constructed, and how exactly they were used. Salado canals had lots of remarkable features that still stand. First, they were wide at the mouth and carefully tapered, getting smaller as secondary branches drew water from the main channel. By shrinking the channel size as the flow decreases, the Salado were able to stabilize flow rate. A steady flow rate is key to creating a functional irrigation system. Water that moves too fast carries sand and silt that will eventually block the canal. Water that moves too slow will not reach the area they were try to get it to. Second, canals covered miles of territory, avoiding hills and valleys that could affect flow rate. Most of the canals were in the desert area but were layered in clay to make the canal more durable and sturdy. They didn’t have to fix the canal very often because they made the canal so durable with layering the clay. If they did have to repair the canal it was very difficult be cause they would have to build a dam...

Wfnx-101.7 and Boston Radio Wars

...The case study addresses the history of the radio economy and WFNX’s struggle to maintain a competitor in the industry. WFNX-101.7 FM was a small radio station started by a local media conglomerate called The Phoenix Media/ Communications Group in 1983. WFNX was actually founded to serve as a link to the company’s flagship newspaper “The Boston Phoenix” which was known as the largest alternative weekly in New England. Speaking from an external standpoint, the industry’s consumers were well educated, affluent, well-read, single professionals and students at the time that were unsatisfied with mainstream media. These were the targets of the newspaper, and as a result WFNX would speak out to them in their own form of “alternative music.” Critical issues arise already because this company goes against mainstream media and is targeted toward a smaller minority of individuals. Alternative music was newly being introduced and proved to be acceptable on a smaller scale than other forms of music such as Rock and Roll and Pop. The biggest key internal problem faced by the company is the stubbornness and lack of long-term vision in their human resources (PD Program Directors). The company received a huge spurt in growth after their Green Day concert; however their follow-up was rendered useless. Kurt St. Thomas’s prophetic vision created an excellent opportunity for the little 3,000 watt radio station to become a major competitor in the radio industry. While their competitors worked...

Rise Like a Phoenix

...if we only believe the things that we want to see. Sometimes the truth is the only thing that hurts us the most. But in the long run, would you rather live in a world full of lies than to live with the truth? Many Filipinos believe that the youth is the hope of this nation. But I believe that the youth is not simply the hope of the nation. The youth itself is the nation. Every little decision of the youth affects the future of the society. Every little deed makes up someone’s history. Every youth can be a hero in their own paths. But are they given that chance and opportunity to change the nation’s future? The word of the youth is commonly considered to be futile. In the society we live in someone’s worth or sense is measured by the age and by the number of wrinkles on one’s forehead. The truth is, the voice of the youth is more sincere and more straightforward. It is an honest voice which is overruled by emotions without any limitations or thoughts to consider because the youth is as innocent as an infant but not as aged as an elder. It means that the youth is like a hybrid of two magnificent states, the pureness of the mind of a child and the wisdom developed through time floating in a place of equilibrium. What can the youth do? What can the youth contribute to ease that pain that was inflicted to the Filipinos by the Filipinos themselves? The youth cannot do much with their physical prowess, nor can we help by our financial capabilities. All we can do is to become an instrument...

A Most Impressive Place I’ve Ever Been

...A most impressive place I’ve ever been After seeing so many views, a place kept occupying the most in my heart, which is named after Phoenix. A county of western Hunan province on the Luxi province border , at the south of Huaihua zone, covered an area of 1759.1 k㎡. Because of the rain, it has already turned into dark when we arrived. A blast of wind firstly blowed the smell of Phoenix County, mixed with the flavor of wet earth and grass, into my nose. It refreshed me soon and took all the discomfort away. As soon as I placed my luggage, I flew out from the hotel and couldn’t wait to unveil the view any more. In the dim light, I began to observe this lovely village. Even though it was evening, the phoenix was still shining and touching. On the both side of the road, fascinating bars lined abreast. Happy laughers and cheerful voices came out, enticing smell of food drifted in the air. A range of ethnic goods displayed at the roadside stands. The Tuo River just goes across the county from the west side to the east side, separating this town into two parts. However, those two parts are connected by a special kind of bridge, called ‘hundred- step bridge’. Strictly speaking, it’s not a bridge but a construction built with hundreds of respective stones. My foot stamped down on those stones as discreet as possible. Noises continued spreading from side to side until the night was filled with boisterous scenes. Bright lights reflected upon the water, breezes swept over causing many...

Traditions
