Phyllis Mae Dailey is remembered as the first black nurse to serve in the navy. This came after her induction to the United States Navy Nurse Corps on March 8, 1945. The New- York-born lady became the first beneficially of the changes that had recently been introduced to the United States Navy in order to include black women in the navy (Lane et al). At the time of her induction to the navy, Phyllis Mae Dailey was aged 25 years old. Before joining the navy, Dailey had undertaken a course in nursing at the Lincoln School of Nursing in New York. Even with her academic and personal qualifications, Dailey had previously been denied induction to the navy.
