Plastic Does Not Belong in the Sea “For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), it’s always ourself we find in the sea” this is a beautiful phrase E. E. Cummings once said. The ocean is vital for the environment. It’s well known to be one of the most important natural resources of earth. At the same time, it’s very much affected with pollution and trash. The photograph “Polluted Sushis” shows three sushis placed in a white platter, they are wrapped around plastic in place of the usual seaweed. This image leads to an understanding that nothing goes by without a consequence. The message that is being sent by this image is powerful in the sense of saying that what we throw into the ocean, will eventually come back. The JWT advertisement agency in charge of the add “Polluted Sushis” does a great job using ethos, pathos, and logos to help effectively persuade the audience to stop littering the sea. The use of pro environmental ads nowadays is quite usual. Some of them are very harsh and direct, they go straight to the point and leave no space to wonder. Nevertheless, there are some ads which are more subtle with their message. They suggest the problem in a more creative way giving the viewer the possibility to reflect upon their add. I find this mechanism much more effective than the first one because it gives a way to internalize the problem shown. Precisely, this is what happens with “Polluted Sushis”. It achieves that people are most likely to perceive the possibility of what is presented in the image to be real close. The credibility of the image has

Porter 2 been built from showing a type of food that is usually perceived as fresh and healthy and altering it with plastic, which is clearly harmful for consumption. This aspect of the picture sends a waring signal to the public and is much more effective than only showing a polluted part of the sea. The message is very clear because it creates a connection between the viewer and the image by frightening it with the closeness of the problem. The “Polluted Sushis” image creates a variety of emotional connections with the audience because of the way it is depicted. With a first glance of the image, you see three sushis arranged neatly over a white rectangular plate. Within a couple of seconds you realize that all of them are covered up in plastic instead of seaweed. The plastic covering them comes from various sources. Specifically, one shows a black bar code in a blue background, another seems to be from a light blue plastic bag and the third one belongs to some sort of decoration wrapper. All three sushis stand still on top of the plate. They create a feeling of impotence. Evidently, nobody would want to eat something covered up in plastic. The emotional connection achieved in this image relays on the fact that pollution is not a problem external to us. The style used in the whole image is sincere and neat. It has no special or manipulated effects, it’s very straightforward. Everything that is presented in the image is shown in a way that every age group will be able to understand the issue depicted or what is going on within the photograph. The image itself logically persuades the reader to reflect upon it’s actions regarding sea pollution. However, the clear and straightforward message comes with the proverb “What goes around, comes around.” followed by “Keep the sea clean.” Proverbs are both linguistic and behavioral items, possessing motives and a logical structure. They are messages passed among people from time to time and contain a shared meaning. In this case, the message that

Porter 3 accompanies the image appeals to our intellect by suggesting that everything that is thrown into the sea, will eventually return to us. It’s a strong message because the image shows us the logical possibility of encountering this trash in our own food. Logos is used to inform the audience not only about what is currently happening to the sea, but reminds viewers to think about the possibility of facing with this problem themselves. The language used in the proverb is appropriate to the audience and subject of the advertisement. The message is not hard to understand and allows the audience to connect thoroughly. As a matter of fact, the best tool the image uses to create a reflection upon the audience is the closeness of the situation. The idea that this platter of sushi with plastic could be served in someones next meal creates a strong reflection and persuades the audience effectively.. Based on the image itself, most people would be able to understand the long-lasting damage the sea is going through. Rhetoric was surely used in the process of constructing the image because the altered threesome of sushis sends a clear message to the audience in a symbolic way. The thought of karma is greatly used both within the image and the phrase chosen in the advertisement. The proverb “What goes around, comes around”, which is the logical aspect of the picture, shares emotional connections with the plastic seaweed. It’s short and contains a very clear meaning. They used a catchy phrase to evoke our memory and reason. If one does not expect to see plastic in their food, one shouldn’t permit to see plastic in the sea. This image gives the audience something to reflect on internally because of it’s effective use of persuasion through ethos, pathos and logos.

Man Versus Nature: Technology Versus Environment: Money Versus Wild Life

...Man versus Nature: Technology Versus Environment: Money Versus Wild Life Bristol Bay Although the fishing industry has long been associated with the contribution of marine pollution little work has been done on the effects on the industry itself of marine debris and other pollution. The fishing industry is responsible for discarded nets, hooks, fishing poles, and many times sunken boats, among other gear. In many circumstances this is not the intended plan when going fishing to catch their paychecks. In fact the fishing industry pays a high price for these losses from the time they have to replace their nets to the pulling of old nets and trash out of their new nets on a regular basis. When questioned about the effects of marine debris on their fishing activities, Shetland fishermen responded that 92% had recurring problems with accumulated debris in nets, 69% had had their catch contaminated by debris and 92% had snagged their nets on debris on the seabed. Many also experienced fouled propellers and blocked intake pipes. On average, 1-2 hours per week were spent clearing debris from nets. Debris could cause a restricted catch and many boats avoided particular fishing areas altogether due to the high concentrations of debris. It has gotten to the point for many fishers that they can no longer fish certain areas known to be well stocked with money fish due to the time consuming issues with trash and fishing debris in those specific waters due to left behind gear. ...greatest, most extraordinary, plastic waste tide ever faced. Washed out on the coasts in obvious and clearly visible form, the plastic pollution display obviously seen on the beaches is only the preface of the greater story that unfolded further away in the world’s oceans, yet mostly originating from where people stand: the land. In 2008, our global plastic consumption worldwide has been estimated at 260 million tons, and, according to a 2012 report by Global Industry Analysts, plastic consumption is to reach 297.5 million tons by 2015. Plastic is versatile, lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant, strong, and relatively inexpensive. Those are the attractive qualities that lead us, around the world, to such a voracious appetite and over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials that are used in the production of so many products all, ultimately, become waste with staying power. Our tremendous attraction to plastic, coupled with an undeniable behavioral propensity of increasingly over-consuming, discarding, littering and thus polluting, has become a combination of lethal nature. Plastic bags are in use by consumers worldwide since the 1960’s, (Mc Kinley, 2010). These bags are sometimes called single-use bags, referring to carrying items from a store to a home. Open bags with carrying handles are used in large numbers worldwide. Stores often provide them as a convenience to shoppers. The number of plastic bags used worldwide has been...

Having lagged well behind the pack of oil majors when Hayward took over, as measured by return on capital, BP is now about average, but it would like to get closer to the leader, Exxon. That is the context for all the plans B The key points of that plan are: 1. $3bn to be saved through cost-cutting and efficiency improvements over the next 2-3 years. 2. Roughly $2bn from refining, putting the emphasis on efficient operations rather than just getting the refineries running, which has been the priority. A further $1bn from better project management, resulting from the creation of a new global development unit...

Snowboard History

...for five hours straight in two to three feet of snow. It was like nothing else we had ever ridden. We came down the hill and went up to the bar and got some drinks and a couple of guys came up to us and asked us who we were. We all exchanged names and from that night on we started meeting more and more people and becoming more of a part of what was going on at Boston Mills-Brandywine. We were a part of a community, a community that knows no bounds as to color or age or race. We were all just snowboarders here. The origins of snowboarding go back to 1964. A surf fanatic named Sherman Poppen was wanting to surf the magic landscape of the rockies. As a result he created the first surfboard for the snow. The first product was a 20 m long plastic plank. This as you can imagine was a rough place to start for snowboarding. They called it “snurfing” as in snow surfing. This only lasted a short while, in 1970 a man named Milovich started making snowboards in the design of short surfboards and added metal edges for better carving. Carving is where your turn on your edges and perform small or...

Supply Chain Management

...Dell’s Supply Chain Management Strategy Build-to-order model, Dell, Direct model, PC Manufacturing, SCM, Supply Chain Case Study Abstract The focus of this case study is the supply chain management practices of Dell. Dell has been following its unique ‘direct build-to-order’ sales model for more than 20 years. Customers can plan their own configuration and place orders directly with the company via the phone or its Web site. Over the years, Dell’s supply chain efficiencies and direct sales gave it a competitive advantage. Can Dell regain its market leader position from HP? In 2006 however, Dell faced several problems. Many customers complained about long delays in supplies. Recall of Sony battery cells in its laptops brought undesirable media hype to the company. Increasing discontent of customers led to a slowdown in sales. Consequently, Dell lost its market leadership to Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP). Industry analysts felt that, with Dell’s competitors also improving their supply chains and matching Dell’s direct model, the company had been losing its competitive edge. Dell will have to bear additional costs with its foray into retail distribution thereby minimizing its cost advantage. Besides, profit margins of Dell will drop further since it will have to offer incentives to compete with HP in retail stores. Though Dell spruced up its product design and range but Apple is clearly far ahead of it. Many experts feel that such new initiatives will only distract Dell from its...

...values for temperature and precipitation) for a given place and time of year, from one decade to the next. We know that the global climate is currently changing. The last decade of the 20th Century and the beginning of the 21st have been the warmest period in the entire global instrumental temperature record, starting in the mid-19th century. Climate change, also called global warming, refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. An overwhelming scientific consensus maintains that climate change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air. The gases trap heat within the atmosphere, which can have a range of effects on ecosystems, including rising sea levels, severe weather events, and droughts that render landscapes more susceptible to wildfires. Climate change is a large-scale, long-term shift in the planet's weather patterns or average temperatures. Earth has had tropical climates and ice ages many times in its 4.5 billion years. So what's happening now? Since the last ice age, which ended about 11,000 years ago, Earth's climate has been relatively stable at about 14 °C. However, in recent years, the average temperature has been increasing. * Higher temperatures Scientific research shows that the climate - that is, the average temperature of the planet's surface - has risen by 0.89 °C from 1901 to 2012....
