For decades, the use of different substances for various applications lead to the discovery of potential toxic substances that may have caused injurious effects. Poisoning commonly occurs thru ingestion and usually, it was unintentional. Acute toxicity is the single exposure or multiple exposures for short periods to the substance causing the injury. Symptoms may be rapid and are in close relation to the toxic agent. On the other hand, chronic toxicity are caused by repeated or multiple exposure for longer periods to the poison. Signs and symptoms of chronic toxicity may appear even after several years upon the initial exposure. ADULT TOP TEN TOXICITIES 1. CAUSTICS Caustics are strong acids and alkali that when ingested can cause tissue injury by chemical reaction. They damage the tissues by accepting a proton (alkaline substance) or donating an proton (acidic substance) in an aqueous solution. In aqueous solutions, the hydrogen...

...If the person has no symptoms but has taken a potentially dangerous poison, you should also call a poison control center or go to the nearest emergency department for an evaluation. Poison is anything that kills or injures through its chemical actions. Most poisons are swallowed. But poisons can enter the body in other ways: By breathing , Through the skin, By IV injection, From exposure to radiation, or Venom from a snake bite. There are many different poison and there is a way for treating many of them. If you exposed areas with rubbing alcohol next, wash the exposed areas with water only, take a shower with soap and warm water, lastly put gloves on and wipe everything you had with you, including shoes, tools, and your clothes, with rubbing alcohol and water.are exposed, according to the FDA, you should quickly (within 10 minutes), you should first, cleanse Treatment of poisonous snake bites involves thorough cleansing of the wound and observation of the victim to determine whether symptoms suggestive of evenomation develop over time. In most cases of poisonous snake bites, an antivenin is given, preferably by intravenous administration. For rattlesnake, cottonmouth, and copperhead bites, Antivenin Polyvalent (ACP) equine derived antivenin was the standard treatment in emergency departments for many years. ACP, however, is known to cause a number of potentially severe allergic reactions because of its equine origin. In 2000 the U.S. FDA approved the sheep-derived antivenin...

...POISON PILL STRATEGIES Poison pill strategies are defensive tactics that allow companies to thwart hostile takeover bids from other companies. Many companies may find themselves unprepared when facing such bids. By adopting a poison pill strategy, a company can be somewhat reassured that acquiring companies will approach its board of directors, not the shareholders. Poison pill strategies are also known as shareholders' protection rights plans. HISTORY During the late 1950s and early 1960s, several large corporations began acquiring other companies to diversify their operations. Diversification allowed them to offset their losses in a failing industry with profits from other unrelated, successful industries. Such phenomena caused concerns about the potential of conglomerates to concentrate excessive economic power in the hands of a few corporations. This led to the passage of the Williams Act in 1968, which required the acquiring company to fully disclose the terms of an impending acquisition and to allow a period for competing offers for the target company to be made. By the late 1970s, the pace of acquisition nearly came to a halt. In 1982, however, the U.S. Supreme Court passed a landmark ruling in the case of Edgar v. MITE Corp. that invalidated the basis for anti-takeover laws in thirty-seven states. Furthermore, under the Reagan administration, the U.S. Department of Justice followed a lax policy towards enforcing anti-takeover laws. No longer able to shelter themselves...

...Poison ivy is a plant known for causing severe inflammation of the skin, also known as contact dermatitis. The plant contains a sap which causes instant irritation if it comes in contact with skin. Poison ivy is native to North America, where it mainly grows in clusters on the edges of woodland-where there is sufficient sunlight for it to grow. The plant is characterized by clusters of three leaflets, which can range from light green to dark green, each growing on its own stem, connected to the main vine (Has No Thorns). At least 50 people who come into contact with these plants develop an itchy rash. You can develop a reaction to urushiol from direct contact, touching contaminated objects (Such as shoes after walking), even breathing in smoke...

[3] List the Preliminary Takeover Steps: a) Bidding Strategies b) Casual Pass c) Bear Hugs [4] What is Tender Offers Throughout the years many acquisitions have been hostile, which has led to companies to creative preventative and defensive takeover methods. Preventative is used as a way to reduce the likelihood of a takeover, and defensive measure (active measures) are used afer a hostile bid has been issued. Keeping the company successful with shares at a high cost prevents short-term gain takeover. There are two hypothesis that explain the impact on management and stockholders during a hostile takeover. Management Entrnechment hypothesis states that nonparticipating stockholders experience a reduction in wealth when management tries to stop a takeover, where Shareholders interests hypotheiss states that stockholders’ wealth rises when management prevent takeover. Companies today monitor it’s shareholders and the percentage that they own as a way to foresee a potential hostile takeover. Many companies even sell and provide their employees with shares because they are more likely to oppose a takeover, whereas an investor shareholder will more likely to favor a takeover. When an increase of trading occurs, the company gets a clue...

...Throughout history and popular culture, various figures have been associated with the lore of poison rings. One of the earliest accounts can be traced to Roman antiquity in which Romans are theorized to have used poison rings to commit suicide when painful death was unavoidable. Such an example can be seen in the suicide of Demosthenes (384-322 BC), a Greek statesman and orator who directed a revolt against Alexander the Great. It is speculated by Greek biographer Plutarch in his 2nd century A.D publication Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans, that Demosthenes (fig.2) in fear of being arrested and brutally tortured, committed suicide by consuming poison hidden in a hollow ring, worn on his arm. Another example is in the death of Hannibal...

...Poisons Abi Barnes Aconite A poison is a substance that can cause illness or death among an organism when introduced to the body and a toxin is a poison that originates from an animal or plant; a lethal dose is an amount of something that will cause death. The different types of poisons are those from various different types of animals, medicines, common household cleaning products, mushrooms and plants. In their own way all poisons are helpful, such as for animals; animals use poisons as a defence technique against their predators, as do some plants. Cleaning products are harmful if ingested, inhaled, or sometimes even when they come into contact with skin, but they are also helpful to sanitize and clean our home and/or...

...Not all poisoning attempts have to be done using the well-known, flashy poisons like arsenic or cyanide though, and in fact a case could be made that this is a good thing for those intending to perform a homicide. In some cases, simple over the counter drugs will suffice. More and more frequently murder attempts have been made with an unexpected weapon: tetrahydrozoline, a compound found in many eye drops, including Visine. Many would-be murderers will put anywhere from a few drops to whole bottles in their victim’s food or drink and wait. When placed in the eyes as intended, these types of eye drops will constrict blood vessels in the eyes to “get the red out.” With a few drops to the eyes, it does its intended job. When swallowed in excess, however, the chemicals in the drops will “bind to receptors in the sympathetic nervous system, altering signals to the vascular system” and leading to side effects like rapid heartbeat, nausea, blurred vision and convulsions (Blum, 2013b). One redeeming factor about tetrahydrozoline is that it “not a top-of-line-lethal substance” and as a result is more likely to make people incredibly sick and they can likely get treatment before they would be at risk of death (Blum, 2013b). What makes...

...Wrath” in 1965-1973. He dedicated his life in making a difference for immigrants working conditions. Chavez witnessed Immigrants dying every day because of the harmful pesticides used in agriculture. He organized a union called UFW (United Farm Workers of America) (Monte 10). This was the first effective farm workers’ union in America. Chavez knew that he had to find a way to stop the use of the poisonous pesticides, so he gave his speech for the consumers of the grapes. Consumers did not care what was happening to the immigrants, but they do care about what happens to them. Chavez told consumers they were eating poison and they started to listen. Chavez wanted the consumer to see and feel the dangers through his speech and facts he spoke about. He knew once they heard how the poison pesticides affect everyone, the farmers would finally stop using that poison because consumers would not buy a poisonous grape. Chavez used logos to strengthen his speech to the consumers. Logos is known as logical evidence, facts used to prove what is said. For example, Chavez talks about the five insecticides used on the grapes to keep...

...administering specific “anti-venom”. Explain how “anti-venom” may work. Snakes are cold blooded animals that are found in tropical and subtropical countries. Snakes have some glands in their mouth that produce very poisonous substance and its even worst through their bites. The seriousness or extend of the poison depends on various factors. One is the body tissue where the venom is injected. It’s more serious when the poison is injected directly to the blood vessels meaning it spreads very quickly through blood transmission in the rest of the body. The extent of the poison also depends on the part of the body where the snake bites. Snake bites that occur on parts of the body with a lot of adipose tissue are less poisonous than in the parts with less adipose tissue. This is because these tissues are low in blood supply hence they end up delaying transmission or the spread of poison to the rest of the body (Timbrell, 2009) Specific anti-venom is used in treating snake bite since the severity of the poison depends on the snake type and other factors. Since the venom is injected in the blood the anti-venom should also be administered to the blood In order to neutralize the poison. This means that it might have some side effects if not well used since its injected directly to the blood. The anti-venom neutralizes the poisonous venom injected by the snake hence causing venom release from the receptor site. Since venom causes blockage of these receptor sites the anti-venom helps in...

...THE RESEARCH QUESTION The study should be based on finding out the effects of toxins on living organism. This research will try to find out the positive and negative effects of enzyme toxin in plants and animals. The excessive use of toxins can be harmful to the environment while the use of controlled amounts of this same enzyme can be useful to the environment. Toxins are said to be any poisonous substances that are produced in the living cells. Organic chemist Ludwig Brieger is said to be the first chemist to use the word toxins in the 19th century. Small molecules, proteins and peptides are all said to be toxins. These organisms are capable of causing diseases on the contact with any contact or absorption by body issues. Toxins greatly vary in the degree of severity from the minors such as bee stings to majors such as botulinum toxins Toxins are also constituents that are made by plants and are harmful to humans. But some toxins can be used in small doses and help in medication but become poisonous when used in large amounts DESCRIPTION OF IDENTIFIED PERSPECTIVE (natural sciences) In the natural science subjects such as biology and chemistry, toxins are well described and experimented on by scientists. In chemistry toxins are said to be chemical agent depending on their method of production. On the other hand, toxins that disturb organisms may be said to be biologically produced. Toxins can be either biologically or chemically produced depending on the mode of production...
