PRE- MEN –O- PAUSE Every Obgyn will warn you of everything that could possibly go south on in your body as you develop and walk the time of life; most people would say. Why then is it that no one has found it expedient to warn me, about the malevolent peril these changes would bring, not only to my body but my mind! How long I been awake and how much sleep have I intermittently burned on my couch, I don’t know. The last I recall, was the piece of pastry in my hand, a cup of soda in between my knees and my son trying to ask me where the ketchup was stored in the refrigerator as I struggled to read through all the paper all four of my children, had brought from school for the day? My body began to sweat profusely and I could feel the heat of the ominous hand of age sliding down my spine with his unwelcome caress, and I cringed; bracing myself up for the onslaught of erratic sensation about to evade my senses. Although incoherent for a moment, I told myself, this time I am going to fight it and suppress this warm feeling and wetness soaking up the arch on my bosom. I spoke too soon, my blouse was the first to come off, then my pants and my crackled breathing and moans caved in as I suddenly jostled the heap of papers down the side table and stood to my feet. I blinked hard, trying to quickly recover from the slaps and itch in unusual places I was feeling. I was terrified but I could not imagine what was going on. My body which was once a casing I knew its every nook and cravis could not help me. The smile turned down the corner of my lips bending into a sad whimper as I stared into the stranger whose eyes locked into mine in an odd but heroic defiance; at the face that showed in the mirror. I tried to force recognition and bring back the old me. Then it hit me. Hard! It was unbelievable and unexpected but hard nevertheless. I slid down slowly in shock to the floor, my mouth agape at the sudden reality I have stumbled on. My time and the seasons of my life were fast changing. I nodded to myself at this stark realization that time had passed by me almost unnoticed, and entangled me in its grip of variant intervals, interruptions and eruptions. I reminisced sadly. How do I deal with this, I asked my face in the mirror who starred back equally bewildered. I was just beginning to feel a nice lull in my life after much turbulence and then this? Really? Uh uh… I am not ready for this. What I am ready for, I conversed in my head, is to maintain a good stand where I am and get in track again just run.
The distance of that thought ended as quickly as it came to me, I felt another heat wave coming like an unwelcomed contraction in the belly of a woman in labor. I stood still, almost afraid to breathe not knowing exactly what part of my anatomy I was going to hurt; being cold and hot at the same time. I was stranded again in my own human track; weirdly mangled unto submission , I curled up, holding my lower abdomen and I knew for sure, I am held captive with a pause I wasn’t ready to entertain! I moved slowly from the floor back up and after a quick glance at the mirror, I made my way back to the chair and I sat down with a heavy sigh, totally confused. I decided the best thing to do was not to panic. So, I sat down and decided to sift through my emotion and try to make sense of it all. In a moment I was part relieved. What I was feeling, wasn’t anything too serious compared in the list of worst things that can happen to the body. But this is not fair! Not fair at all! I screamed loudly to the air mixed with a half cry. My throat was parched dry oblivious of my pain, it demanded some cold water or better still ice and I demanded an answer as to why there were no warning signs of this glorified necessary illness of the body called men o pause.
I dragged my feet noisily to the refrigerator and scooped up ice and began to chew hard on it, still pondering in my mind. It is hard being a woman. I murmured over and over till I got to the couch in the bathroom and sank in .why do we have to be the ones to go through all these hideous changes! And who calls this Menopause anyway, men knows nothing about this suffering and the agitation it heaps on us cannot be rested! Is this another sacrifice that has to be made in the altar of womanhood? Who has called us to this noble cause our bodies are so driven to accomplish. I wonder. “Are you ok? I heard Davey’s voice filter through. “You woke me up”, he mumbled. In my mind, I thought really? How selfish! I looked up and my eyes gnarled at time and Davey not knowing which I could unleash my anger at; but he was still half asleep and he walked by to the couch and in an almost childlike goodness, tried to snuggle up to me in the couch, fully oblivious of my discomfort. The timing couldn’t have been more wrong. The glimpse of his joystick was incendiary to my emotions and it brought me no cheer intended and I urged him to get off my space. Everything irritated me and I started to cry. My tears come down uncontrollably for a moment .This got his attention fast. “It’s going to be alright, he consoled me. I was surprised to see he had an idea of my utmost finding of pre-menopausal engrossment. It was no surprise to him he added, and my discovery was nothing but a truth common to all women; mothers, sisters, wives and to doctors. it was nothing for there are remedies that is suggested to help the process. How come nobody ever warns us all of this impending assault on our bodies. Davey rocked me back and forth slowly brushing back my hair and the firmness of his gentle hand on my lower back gave me some assurance that it was really going to be alright.

I closed my eyes for a moment and regret began to stir up in my heart as I listened to him calmly tell me about the some medical research and findings that are being developed to help assuage the sufferings of menopause. The pang of remorse mounted as I listened on. I realized Davey had been with me patiently and quietly holding my hands as the hormones went off line and leaving me in its wake my frustration on whatever was visible on site to prick and prod everyone and everything. From the toilet seat, kitchen sink and crying about everything. By this time, the baulking storm within me had subsided and so was the heat. I whispered as if afraid of the impeding answer. I asked where time go? Davey smiled boyishly, it’s still here baby, and it’s all here. Time hasn’t gone anywhere but stayed with you as a quiet troubadour. It is all in the crow lines beside your eyes; for every smile, every tear of pain and joy that have travelled your cheeks, it is in the claws of the stretch marks across your belly lines for lives you have sacrificed it all to give and sustain. Although you may not bring sexy back in midriff shorts and tops, the emblem of your triumph lives on and it is greater than the outward beauty displayed therefore the pangs of menopause you feel is a reminder of the imprint of yourself that one day you will leave behind. Baby, it is only a pause and life continues.

Annie Proulx Essay

...Academic essay on Annie Proulx's "Job Story" Choices are something we all make. Not necessarily important choices, but there will always be a time to make them. It's not always good choices, but they have to be made. There will always be consequences, whether it's bad or good. Throughout the story, Leeland Lee has to make a lot of choices. Where to live, where to work and when to work. All the different choices he made, put him in the position he is now. Leeland Lee is an awkward-looking young boy. His face is heavily boned, which he has gotten from his mom, his neck is quite thick and he has red-gold hair. His eyes are as pouchy as a middle-aged alcoholic. His nose is broad and lays close to his face. Lori Bovee is Leeland Lee's wife. She has an undistinguished oval face, and hair of medium length. Leeland Lee is the protagonist of the story, because he is the main character. I would say Leeland is a flat and static character as he is an endless optimist. He doesn't give up when it comes to finding a new job, and despite his wife dying he still gets a job at Unique Eats. The reason he is a static character is because he doesn't change at all. After getting several different jobs he doesn't change anything, after his mom and wife dies he doesn't change one single thing except the fact he isn't listening to the radio anymore, but since that have been an important factor of the story all along, it can also show a lot about how he has changed. The story starts November...

...An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from an author's personal[->0] point of view[->1]. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism[->2], political manifestos[->3], learned arguments[->4], observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article[->5] and a short story[->6]. Almost all modern essays are written in prose[->7], but works in verse[->8] have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope[->9]'s An Essay on Criticism[->10] and An Essay on Man[->11]). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke[->12]'s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding[->13] and Thomas Malthus[->14]'s An Essay on the Principle of Population[->15] are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education[->16]. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays[->17] are often used by universities[->18] in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay[->19] is an attempt to cover a topic...

Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...We all know love. We have all loved in some kind of way. We love our parents, significant others and even our friends. But we can also love other things like animals or material things. But what is the difference between loving and liking? And is it better not to love and feel pain or to love and be hurt in the progress? Jonathan Franzen seeks to answer these questions in his essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts”. The essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is, as mentioned, written by Jonathan Franzen and published in The New York Times, May 28, 2011. Jonathan Franzen is born in 1959, and he is an acclaimed American novelist and essayist. The essay is based on the commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College in Ohio, USA. “Our technology has become extremely adept in creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly. (…)” As Franzen claims in his essay, many people can feel like they love their technological object. It gives them a satisfaction, which human interaction maybe wouldn’t. Franzen however thinks, that people in general don’t love material things: they like them. There is a major difference between loving and liking – even though it might appear small. “Liking, in general, is commercial culture’s substitute for loving.” Products are made to be likeable, but if that concept in transferred to a person, you would instantly see...

Reaction - Salvation

...Reaction – “Salvation” The nonfiction short essay “Salvation” written by Langston Hughes in 1940, presents a theme on the literal and often manipulated perception of children. Hughes narrates the essay as he recounts his disappointing attempt at salvation. Hughes aunt told him that when she was saved by Jesus she saw a light, and felt something happen within herself. As children will do, Hughes took her story literally and was heartbroken as he sat in front of the church and watched other children “saved” while he was not. He believed that Jesus must not want him because he did not see or feel anything. In the end, Hughes is forced to lie about accepting Jesus and in turn rejects the Christian faith all together. I related to Hughes story on many accounts. I am a mother of three young children who perceive everything in life literally, and as a young girl I was raised in a very religious environment. I could visualize and almost feel Hughes devastation as he sat at the front of the church crushed by the thoughts of God not wanting him. “Still I kept waiting to see Jesus” (Barnet, Cain, & Burto, 2011, pp. 351). One of the churches that my family attended for a short time during my childhood practiced speaking in tongs. I specifically remember feeling just like Hughes during a service when other children were speaking in unnatural languages perceived to be sent from God himself. I could not understand why I was not chosen to talk for God and intern was hurt and...

No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch

...Dog Food Fried, Flipped and Devoured Eating dog food may not be seen as the easiest thing to stomach because the smell, texture and by-products found within the mixture are thought of as awful and revolting. In Ann Hodgman’s “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch”, although the title may suggest otherwise, different types of dog food are discussed. In this essay, Hodgman aims to inform her readers about the inequality in different types of dog food, as well as to entertain and amuse. Hodgman is writing to a broad audience, one of dog lovers and owners, as well as those that may be curious as to what is really in dog food, or more generally the packaging and processing of mass-produced food of any kind. Language, description and humor are techniques Hodgman skillfully uses to create a strong, convincing essay. Within this essay, Hodgman continually uses diction and syntax that a diverse audience can understand and relate to. In the beginning, the reader feels repulsed by what is written. However, through a light tone of voice and sentence structure, the levity of the experiences and feelings occurring throughout the experiment is conveyed. The personal anecdotes and thoughts make the tone feel less formal and much more story-like. In this way, Hodgman produces a piece that connects the information and readers Shortly after capturing interest through stating questions, Hodgman begins using large amounts of description. Each type of dog food is explained and illustrated so well that...

Film

...Essay films are arguably the most innovative and popular forms of filmmaking since the 1990s”, Timothy Corrigan claims in his diligent new study, The Essay Film. Corrigan may have an agenda to press, and a thesis to justify, but the recent critical and commercial success of the genre is hard to ignore. A cinematic wave that arguably has its contemporary roots in the late 1980s, when American filmmakers such as Michael Moore and Errol Morris rose to public prominence, reached an apotheosis with Moore’s hugely popular, though hugely flawed, Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) and Davis Guggenheim’s information-heavy An Inconvenient Truth (2006), which conjured a compelling piece of screen drama from Al Gore’s Powerpoint presentation. Nowadays, the Award for Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars is one of the most highly coveted. For Corrigan, the essayistic film “describes the many-layered activities of a personal point of view as a public experience”. While this is a perfectly good starting point, the author is so convinced of the elasticity of his subject that he has trouble constraining it under the broader umbrellas of documentary, non-fiction or even fiction. At times it appears that, for Corrigan, all filmmaking is essayistic. Nevertheless, he traces a convincing history of the genre(s) from D. W. Griffith’s prototypical A Corner of Wheat (1909), which contrasts the lives of the agricultural poor with those of their capitalist exploiters, via Dmitri Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein to...

A Gap of Sky

...A Gap of Sky Being a teenager is not always a nice experience. You can evolve in many different directions and people start to demand and expect something special from you. At this stage you are expected to create an identity and some people can’t stand the pressure. In the short story A Gap of Sky Ellie might have felt like everyone, especially her parents, had too high expectations, and therefore decided to join a specific group of friends where she knew she could do what she wanted, relax and feel free. Unfortunately not everyone is making the right choice and ends up somewhere it’s hard to get away from like Ellie. The short story was written by Anna Hope in 2008. The story is told by a 3rd person narrator from Ellie’s point of view. It is written as a stream of consciousness, which helps to give the impression that Ellie might be under the influence of a drug. Ellie is a 19-year-old girl who lives in London. Throughout the story, which spreads over an afternoon, she digs deeper into herself, through sleepiness, drugs, university and a general indifference towards life. Ellie likes to party and do drugs in the evenings instead of staying home and study. Throughout the story the only thing, which is in Ellie’s mind, is that she has a paper for the next day, which she hasn’t started yet. It’s important that she hand in her paper, because she is probably not engaged with school and risks getting kicked out. To do the paper she needs printer ink and she goes to the Student...
