Prevention of a School Massacre
One thing we have learned from numerous school shootings is; anyone can and will continue to enter educational facilities, begin shooting at random, killing whomever is in their way. On the surface it would be presumed the shooter would be trying to prove something or convey a message. Every shooter was different in the fact that very few survived. Those who did survive was tried and convicted. The ones that did not survive, their reason may never be known. The people who knew them best are being asked to make a guess as to why. (Becerra, Linke, Molina, & Carey, 2012)These disasters happen with more frequency, people are coming to grips that it is the impossible task to stop these shootings.
As a consultant to the Estancia Public School system on how to make the schools safer, give them security and safety for the children. The town has some people who are in the group of people who are definitely slower in mental aptitudes and the parents are the same way. There are young, aggressive males that could turn to crime very easily. These youth have nothing in this town, they are considered delinquent, disadvantaged because of economy, a lot drop out of high school, and there are no jobs.

The question of the shooters mental health has come up during the most current disasters. It seems to be a trend of mental illness issues that finally forced the shooters into action. What was it that sent them on their rampage, questioning their manhood, name calling, bullying, relationship issues or rejection? If they were all suffering from some sort of mental illness, where were the families in all this? What about their psychiatrists? Was there a change in personality, become more

Insanity Pleas In School Shootings

...For as long as the media has taken note of such instances, school violence, specifically school shootings by pseudocommandos (school shooters who shoot others for revenge), has been a hot topic to cover. In several instances, the shooters have plead for insanity in argument that they were not sane at the time of the massacre and could not identify what was wrong from right. These pleas have become a fall-back argument for some of the pseudocommandos, and in doing so, a select few were found guilty of murder, but the consequences of the massacres committed were eased. In the end, after the school rampages, or SR’s, were committed, the true ethics of the treatment of the shooters must come into question in regards to the insanity plea. How...

...Youth violence in America is an ongoing discussion that has been in the news for quite some time now. Kids are so easily influenced that it is normal to see them in some type of negativity. This matter causes children in our society to engage into violent crimes in school and in their communities. Some say the reason for this is because lack of attention in the homes or parents just not being available for their children. Are these reasonable excuses and why do our kids act in such violent behavior? For many years we try to get our youth involved into extra-curricular activities to stay out of troubles. Sports teams, educational activities, and tutorials can keep children busy when they are not in school. Many factors are mentioned when the media discuss youth violence including: video game interaction, trouble in our schools, and dysfunctional communities. Parents should be aware of signs that their child can be in danger of either committing a crime or being a victim. Something should be done to convince the kids that trouble is so easy to get into but so hard to get out of. The research will continue to grow in the upcoming years to investigate the youth violence and to find ways to keep our children out of trouble. During the teenage years of a child’s life, they are exposed to quite some violence in the media. The main source is video games. Every child loves to play these fast-paced games that contains three-dimensional graphics. The parents do not know if they are safe...

Gun Control

...Gun Control Hypothesis Paper By Christopher Fields Intro to Sociology Prof. Hennington Outline Hypothesis/ opening statement My opinions Love-hate relationship Crime rates Democrat Opinion Republican Opinion Evidence 1 Evidence 2 Evidence 3 Closing statement References After recent school shootings in America, the American people are starting to wonder when is the government going to stricken the gun control laws. After recent studies I will tell you which party republican or democrat is for the stricken the laws and which of them is not. Personally, I feel like you should be judged by your actions. If your criminal background portrays you as violent you should not be allowed to have a gun. On the other hand, if your have never shown any act of violence you should be allowed to have a gun. Crimes such as fraud, drug possession, and other mediocre crimes should not count. Everyone deserves the right to protect themselves, their family or even a stranger. If gun control laws are stricken gun violence will decrease. I’m going to prove this by using the Social Conflict approach which is a macro-oriented paradigm in sociology that views society as an arena of inequality that generates conflict and social change. Guns have a love-hate relationship with society some people fear guns and some people feel safe around guns. Most people fear guns because people think that they are going to get shot and killed for no reason. While others use guns for safety which is...

Safety in Public Schools

...Head: Safety in Schools Safety in Schools Strawberry Rosario ENG 215 Research and Writing Professor Allegra Strayer University June 13, 2011 Safety in Schools Today, school officials deal with violence, drugs, weapons, gangs, shootings, murders and theft to name a few, the public school system should prioritize security services on campus. Parents want to feel that their children's school is safe and secure. Since violence in schools has increased drastically, police officers, video surveillance, and metal detectors are security tools that should be used and installed in schools to improve a safer environment for students. School Resource Officers (SROs) are often sworn police officers employed by the local Police Department and assigned to patrol public school hallways full time. In larger jurisdictions, these police officers may be employed directly by the school district (Kim, 2010). Since violence is common especially with high school students, these police officers help the students understand that they are in the school to protect them but at the same time to enforce the law and good behavior (Geronimo, 2010). School Resource Officers are responsible for criminal law issues, not school discipline issues. They work to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact and positive relationships with students. In addition, the SRO’s develop crime prevention programs and...

Gun Control

...are to be discussed. To its proponents, gun control means prevention of crime. This, they say, should lead to peace. Charles Krauthammer wrote about this in “The Washington Post” in an article titled “Disarm The People.” He wrote, “…a civilized society must disarm its citizenry if it is to have a modicum of domestic tranquility…” Pro-gun activists, on the other hand, see gun-control as a threat not only to their self-defense, but also to their Second Amendment right. In an issue of American Survival Guide, Howard J. Fezell wrote an essay: “Your Individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms,” during which he made plain this fact: gun-prohibitionists have completely ignored numerous rulings of the Supreme Court in which the Supreme Court has stated the Second Amendment as an individual right, not a collective right. Also, they believe it to be a failed experiment. This is obvious in a statement by David Lampo: “The basic premise of the gun control movement, that easy access to guns causes higher crime, is contradicted by the facts, by history and by reason.” According to statistics, gun bans - the ultimate goal of gun control activists - has failed completely. The right to bear arms”, an amendment so prioritized by our founding fathers that it earned the very second spot on the list of birth rights as Americans. However, with constant tragedies striking the United States, such as massacres in public high schools and universities, mall shootings, and attempted assassinations...

Stop the Cruelty

...Keera Owens 22 August 2012 Stop the Cruelty "Did you know that most American households have one or more pets than they have children?” stated by the American Humane Association. We all know that once you decide to get a pet that you now have responsibilities you must fulfill. For instance if you have a dog you know that a dog needs exercise, food and water, toys, baths, medical assistance and even a nice cozy bed. Something that's also important that a dog must receive is a sense of love and safety. “In the United States alone, five to seven million pets are turned into shelters each year,” (ASPCA). All of these millions of animals sitting in shelters are lacking the same one thing and that is a loving home. Due to animal cruelty a lot of these animals are being put in shelters and this is a very serious mater taking place all over the world. The term animal cruelty is pretty self-explanatory and almost speaks for itself. The first thing you think about is an animal living under cruel conditions. That almost pins the definition on the dot. According to the definition, “animal cruelty is the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death upon an animal when not necessary”, (Black Laws Dictionary). Animal cruelty occurs in various forms. Whether it's neglecting, starvation, dehydration, or simply not getting the proper medical attention, it is all forms of animal cruelty. People like to think that animals don't have any feelings and their incapable of feeling pain...

Vaccination Argumentative Essay

...Advancements in the medical field have successfully created endless opportunities of prevention against previous life-threatening diseases. Looking back, vaccines can be seen as early into the 18th century and have significantly reduced the outbreak of diseases to this day (Hernández). Illnesses that once resulted in the massacre of thousands of children worldwide have improved with the innovation of vaccines. Vaccinations not only provide an immunity towards fatal diseases, but can potentially eradicate them. With the miraculous wonders of immunizations, it should be an obligation to parents to vaccinate their children. Nonetheless, immunizations should be a requirement for every child in order to provide the best protection. Today parents refuse to immunize their children. Many believe that the use of aluminum is the cause of mental disabilities in children. However, the amounts of aluminum used in vaccines are not harmful. According to studies, “children are exposed to more aluminum in breast milk and infant formula than they are exposed to in vaccines”...

The Media

...Media has the supremacy to influence millions of individuals through countless formats. Media is everywhere in our daily lives, in television, motion pictures, and radio, influencing what society consume to what society wear. “Media is a very powerful tool capable of mobilizing people’s contemplations and ideologies” (Mock 2004). Most people find television an escape from their hectic daily lives. In our society today, there is an ongoing debate about violence in the media. Media violence has been an issue that most of the literature seems to avoid, but it is important in our lives. To give you perspective on just how much violence kids see on TV, consider this: “The average American child will witness 200,000 violent acts on television by age 18. Kids may become desensitized to violence and more aggressive. TV violence sometimes begs for imitation because violence is often promoted as a fun and effective way to get what you want” (Kids Health, 2010). With this one can see how much of an influence T.V has on kids. As the teens and kids continue to watch and read these violent images depicted in music and film, detrimental effects affect their judgment, attitudes, and behaviors. Concerns about media violence have grown as television has acquired a global audience. While TV violence is not the only cause of aggressive or violent behavior, it is clearly a significant factor. Television can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior. Unfortunately...

Argumentative Essay: Gun Control In America

...School security wasn’t the only thing that raised controversy after the killings, many broader topics in general society was brought up as well. Gun control was the largest culprit in this scenario and for good reason. Society is driven by fear; afraid of others and what one might do if a weapon is in the wrong hands. It is unbelievable how simple it is to obtain a semi-automatic gun in America. Anyone who was of the required age could register for a gun license and purchase a weapon – many not even required to background check the applicant. Fugitives, felons and other criminals have easy access to weapons and increase the risk of a similar event. Even if they don’t get permission to obtain a gun, family and friends will like be in possession of a firearm. Both...

Guns Don’t Kill People, Idiots with Guns Do

...Guns Don’t Kill People, Idiots with Guns Do My mother had a bumper-sticker that read, “I have the right to arm bears,” a play on words, of course, to the second amendments, “The right to bear arms.” As an advocate of Gun Control, she found that hilarious. Between advocates and antagonists of the “right to bear arms,” there are two primary and opposing interpretations of the second amendment. Proponents interpret it to apply to the individual, while antagonists believe it guarantees a collective right, not an individual right to bear arms. There is law to support both sides. I am not going to argue the merits of either view from a constitutional perspective; instead, I want to show that firearms in general are an impediment to American society, not a benefit. The only solution that will help to protect society is Gun Control. Primarily, we need to restrict gun ownership, the types of firearms/ammunition allowed and who is allowed to possess them. To put it nicely, you would have to be a person of diminished capacity to not believe that there is a relationship between firearms and the escalating rate of deaths in America. Our rates of murder, suicide, and accidental deaths by firearms are one of the highest (compared to other developed countries) in the world. In an article by Charles Kenny, he references a “survey of academic studies performed by Harvard University’s Lisa Hepburn and David Hemenway where they concluded “That high-income countries with more firearms...

Bullying in Schools: Can It Be Stopped?

...Bullying in Schools: Can It Be Stopped? Even though schools face cost issues in education of staff and anti-bullying enforcement, bullying is a serious problem that is not being properly addressed. With the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado, where on April 20, 1999 two students started a massacre where 12 students and one teacher were killed, and suicides in multiple places, it’s clear that bullying causes tragedies. All of the events, in some way, are related to bullying. In recent years, there has been more media coverage of incidences of bullying and its repercussions. There was a girl in Massachusetts named Phoebe Prince that after being bullied for months went home after school on January 14, 2010 and committed suicide by hanging herself. She just couldn’t take it anymore. Prior to this, the school where she went did little in the ways of anti-bullying education. According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, “In 2007, about 32 percent of 12- to 18-year-old students reported having been bullied at school during the school year and 4 percent reported having been cyber-bullied”(“Indicator 11”). Our children are dying due to being bullied at school. My own children have gone through being bullied at school. My twelve-year-old was bullied to the point of being physically injured. As a parent, I find this unacceptable. The following graph shows these numbers: Figure 11.1. Percentage of students ages...
