Gioe Melaney is the general director of Southern Toro – a subsidiary company included in the distribution system of Toron Coporation in Galveston, Taxas. The case concentrates on the conversation between Melaney and his son about the company’s inventory level and ways to manage goods orders of the upcoming spring seaso. So far, the company has changed the method of managing orders through purchasing the Rytech computer system, nevertheless, it seems that Joe Father has not totally trusted this system. Rytech system is expected to reduce the level of inventory by 30% through the method Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) applied in the period of re-ordering each product. This solution is based on the fact that Toro is now having three fixed ordering times in a year. However, Joe Father only trusts his market sensbibility. He always makes orders on the basis of previous consummption levels, and then adjusts goods quantities after receiving addtional inforrmation of the fluctuation in demands. Therefore, his inventory turnover is estimated to be at least 3 turns/year. ...think that the bigger the farming company is, the better they are. However, others think the bigger they are, the more damage they cause to the environment and the economy. There are so many different reasons for both of these opinions, but smaller farms are much more beneficial and practical than bigger, more elaborate, farms. As Bill McKibben says, “We’re moving, if we’re lucky, from the world of few and big to the world of small and many. We’ll either head there purposefully or we’ll be dragged kicking, but we’ve reached one of those moments when tides reverse” (McKibben). Smaller and more abundant farms are helpful because they can create more jobs, can yield more crops than bigger farms, are better for the environment, and they can produce healthier and fresher products to more people. The smaller farms are more abundant compared to the big industrial farms, which means the amount of transportation is less. This means that they do not have to use as much, or any, chemicals on their crops because the products will not be sitting around in boxes for as long as they do when they have to travel further. Bigger farms use chemicals to preserve the longevity of the crop and to terminate anything that would come in the way of the crop growing out its full capability. ...What we put into our bodies is our choice. However, have you ever stopped to think about where the food you buy at the local supermarket comes from? When we think we are eating healthy are we really making the right choices? What about where does the food from the supermarket comes from? How did it get to the supermarket before it made its way into your shopping cart? These are all questions we want to think about when we make food choices. Not only do we want to make right choices but we also want our choices to have a positive outcome on our community. Supermarkets are usually stocked via grocery suppliers or grocery wholesalers. One of my local chain supermarkets, Shaw’s, has different vendors that they use. Their website does not list the different vendors but it has access to their policies and how they choose their vendors. A Consumers International report from July 2012 says that supermarkets buy from suppliers and then sell to consumers. Supermarkets have both retailer and buyer power which means they have influence on both suppliers and consumers. “The more supermarkets buy, the better terms they get. The better terms they get, the more they sell.” (Nicholson, C. & Young, B., 2012).
