The validity of a particular website can be judged as a reliable source is to first separate fact from opinion, and then ask questions regarding who made the statement, the person’s credentials, was the idea critique and by whom, and who supports and who disagrees with the idea. The CARS test is a tool that helps determine the quality of information by asking questions regarding the credibility, accuracy, reasonableness, and support of the information. The Research Navigator and Academic Directories, such as Librarian’s Index to the Internet (www.lii.org), INFOMINE (www.infomine.com), and Academic information (www.academicinfo.com) provide reliable and credible sources. In addition, the URLs should be considered. URLs ending in .edu are educational institutes and .gov is government agencies. “All the sites listed in the Research Navigator databases have been selected to maximize reliability and credibility” (Carter, Bishop, Kravits, 2007).

And as much as we would like to keep up with the newest development in our field, life gets in the way. We have responsibilities such as work, family, community involvement, and finances that don’t allow us to go back to school every time something changes. This is where membership in a professional association comes in handy. They help to keep members up to date on current events in their field.
