...biggest challenge for the project manager is to develop an integrated planning and control tool. Critically discuss this statement with the aid of practical examples. To develop an integrated planning and control tool is the biggest challenge for a Project Manager because of many uncertainties in any project. One of the most vital issues is ensuring that all the planning steps are adhered to, namely, the Project Charter; Feasibility Study; Scope Management; Build Method; Execution Strategy; Work Breakdown Structure; Organisational Breakdown Structure; Critical Path Method; Schedule Barchart; Procurement Schedule; Resource Histogram; Budgets and Cash flow; Communication, Project Quality, Risk Management and Baseline Plan. Failure to do this could have a detrimental effect on the other role players of the project team and this could upset the course of action in the control phase of the project. The Project Manager has his hands full and has a major responsibility to ensure the project is a success, otherwise failure is eminent. Due to the limited answering space available, I will concentrate on the Baseline Plan because according to Rory Burke, “it may be considered as a portfolio of documents which outline how to achieve the project objectives... and guide the project through the execution and project control phase.” and according to Michele McDonough , “scheduling a baseline plan is something project managers should have in place before a project goes forward from the "drawing...

A subset of project management that includes the processes required to ensure timely completion of the project. It consists of activity definition, activity sequencing, activity duration estimating, schedule development and schedule control Project time management with PMBOK consists of six main processes. The first of these processes is in the definition of activities and action items. Project managers must identify the tasks to be undertaken during the project life cycle. Without the definition of activities and action items, there is nothing to schedule. Methods used to define activities during this process include decomposition and utilization of templates. Decomposition is a breakdown of milestones into action items. The templates may come from previous activities or previous projects. The second process in time management is the sequencing of activities. This process involves the mapping of task dependencies. To do this, project managers will require preceding documents. Tools for this activity include the precedence diagramming method, the arrow diagramming method and other methods for diagramming dependencies. The output for this process is the network diagram. These issues were mainly derived from a combination of poor communication, bad planning, a confusing organisation structure and a lack of direction & team morale/ teamwork. The company received a contract for the ‘Trophy Project’ – which was project managed by a previously junior member of staff – Reichart. The project was extremely problematic and was delivered very late and at great cost, mostly due to the poorly executed project control mechanisms within the business (during planning and project implementation). The business could have greatly benefitted from using a more integrated approach to project planning and control- something which BAE Systems finds of great importance to their project management activities. ...INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT C H A P T E R 1 Introduction To Project Management Project management offers a structured approach to managing projects. The purpose of this book is to outline the latest planning and control techniques used by industry, commerce, sport and domestic projects, and particularly those used by the project planning software and referred to in the Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management body of knowledge (PMBOK), and the Association of Project Manager's (APM) body of knowledge (bok). As the use of projects becomes more pervasive, so more managers are entering the field of project management. Their success will be helped by their ability to develop a fully integrated information and control system to plan, instruct, monitor and control large amounts of data, quickly and accurately to facilitate the problem-solving and decision-making process. To achieve these goals the project manager needs a comprehensive toolkit - as a plumber works with a bag of tools, so the project manager works with a computer producing organisation charts, work breakdown structures, barcharts, resource histograms and cash-flow statements. Projects have traditionally been managed through a classic functional hierarchical type organisation structure, but with the increase of multi-disciplines, multi-departments, multi-companies and multi-national projects so there has been a move towards management-by-projects, project teams and matrix organisation structures...

If you see the definition of the project - A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. [1] “Temporary” is the key word used to show the importance of Time Management in Project Management. Developing & managing schedule is always challenging for a Project Manager. Cost Management

...huge vision for a project, but had little capital to invest into the vision? Or have you worked with a client who gasped when you revealed how much it would cost to complete their desired scope of work? Or have you been fortunate and had a customer who accepted the costs for the project at face value, made certain the funds were available, and sent you on your way to complete the work? As a general rule, management and customers are always concerned with how much a project is going to cost in relation to how much a project is going to earn. Most likely there is more negotiating, questioning, and evaluating for larger projects than for smaller ones. The relation between the project cost and the project scope should be direct: you get what you pay for. Think it’s possible to buy a mansion at ranch home prices? Not likely. Think it’s possible to run a worldwide marketing campaign at the cost of a postcard mailer? Not likely. A realistic expectation of what a project will cost will give great weight to the project’s scope. As the business need undergoes analysis, progressive elaboration and estimates are completed based on varying levels of detail, and eventually the cost of project will emerge. Often, however, the predicted costs and the actual costs vary. Poor planning, skewed assumptions, and overly optimistic estimates all contribute to this. A successful project manager must be able to plan, predict, budget, and control the costs of a project. Costs associated...
