...Joshua Ocha-Ali10-14-12English 111-55 Helping Ole Granny Pull the Plug: I Vote Yes The state of Massachusetts is trying to pass a law proposing that at the request of a terminally ill person, a doctor would be able to put them out of their misery. This should be allowed everywhere. People shouldn’t have to suffer through a disease until they pass away. You should have the choice over your own life. The person should only have this right if there is no sign of recovery and there will be just suffering and pain until they pass away. This is something that should be taken in writing in the event you lose to ability to communicate. Just like the constitution protects your blood your saliva and in retrospect your whole body. You should have the choice to choose when you want to end your life when you’re faced with a terrible disease, and no one else should be able to decide. I’ve seen family members fighting to keep people alive and going to court with husbands and wives over decision about what to do with the loved one that was in a vegetable state. It causes fighting and should be decided by the person that is in the hospital bed not the people surrounding it. Being sick will also be a burden with all of the expensive hospital bills, could lead to the whole family being in debt and no one would want to put any one into that kind of financial situation. That person could end it now before things get finically tough. The person...

...In a battle of morality between the right to life and the right to choose, which outweighs the other? Some claim that without rights, it is as though one’s life is forgo-ed. Yet others advocate that certain decisions and needs go beyond the freedom of choice. This controversial debate of freedom of choice extends across many issues, ranging from the choice to commit suicide to the abortion of the baby. Here in lies the problem for abortion: what right does one have to determine whether another should live? It’s no longer just one life that we’re dealing with, but the life of an innocent victim. Steven Poole mentions in his book ‘Unspeak’, about the idea of complex messages in terms used. Also could be known as the ‘reading between the lines’ that we rarely do. He brings up the example of ‘pro-life’ versus ‘pro-choice’. The previously known ‘pro-abortionists’ changed their names to ‘pro-choice’, using a softer tactic. This appealed to the idea of giving women the rights and individual responsibility on whether or not to have the baby. More importantly, it subtly cast the opposing team in the negative light-as dictators that are ‘anti-choice’. The opposing team was quick to catch on and swiftly reformed themselves as ‘pro-life’. This automatically placed their adversaries in the position of ‘anti-life’ or rather ‘pro-death’, appealing to the innate and sacred value of ‘life’. Poole very aptly points out that in a ‘conceptual battle’ of morals between life and choice, ‘life’...

...Ok, heads I live, tails, I die. 50% chance. That’s what most children from unwanted pregnancies face. A fifty percent chance to be born. What’s the other choice? Death by abortion. For years, America and the world has been split in two by the controversial topic of abortion. In 1973, the United States Supreme Court allowed the killing of innocent children to become legal. Children like me, who were unwanted. Children who might not have been born. In 1973, with the Roe v. Wade decision, the United States turned its back on the unborn child. Abortions are performed across the United States in many different clinics. On average, every woman has one abortion in her life. There are at least 46 million legal abortions performed in the world every year. 46 million abortions a year. That’s 46 million children who will never see the light of day. 46 million children who will never run and play or have friends or know what life is. 44 million abortions have been performed in in this country alone since abortion was made legal. More babies die from abortions than from natural accidents. In just one day, there will be over four thousand abortions in the United States alone. The United States Constitution states that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” are available to all citizens. Are unborn children not citizens because they’re still in the womb? Are they not human beings like us? They’re in the womb so they can grow in a safe and protective environment, not because they’re not...

...say that granting a child their life isn’t going to amount to an abortion (xxxxxxxxxxxx)? Half of pregnancies among American women are unintended and about four in ten of these pregnancies end in abortion. Although abortions are fairly popular in the United States, there are several Anti-Abortionists living in our world today. They, the Pro-life individuals, have no idea how abortions will affect the woman and or the child in the future. Although this civil law was put into place for all mankind, there are many people who disagree and does not believe a woman should have the right to abortion. Prolife advocates are the individuals who strongly disagree with a woman’s right to abort life. who is totally against abortions believes that everyone deserves a chance of life. are self-proclaimed prolife advocates. Prolife activists have been around for centuries conducting rallies and prolife demonstrations due to their beliefs. Their beliefs are that birth begins at conception. Once conception has been commenced life begins. Their belief is that once life begins and it is aborted, this is considered murder. ...

...Abortion Abortion is defined as the inducing of premature delivery in order to destroy offspring. It is a chosen miscarriage. The controversy of abortion in the United States is unique because there seems to be no grounds of compromise between two completely opposite sides. That is mostly because either a living human is or isn’t being killed. This is a case between life and liberty, but the complexities of abortion make it hard to settle the two sides. There is much debate whether this is an action of life or death, and the difference is rather large. Yet both sides to the abortion dispute share a common goal: that abortions should become safer, and the number of abortions should decrease. Within abortion, there are many different questions. Does the constitution defend an individual’s right to abortion? Does this include confidentiality? Is a developing fetus a being? Should the law allow abortions for rape or incest cases? The constitution does allow abortion. Constitutional protection of the woman's decision to terminate her pregnancy derives from the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. It declares that no State shall 'deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. (Findlaw 2013) The Supreme Court Decision in 1973, Roe vs. Wade, legalized abortion in the first trimester (NAF 2010). Since then, over 35 Million women have had legal abortions. In America, 24% of pregnancies end in abortion, and 41% of that is on teenagers...

...scientific data. In the book of Genesis alone the word, create is mentioned dozens of times to account for the fact that God was creating us and in what order he created the world. Also in Deuteronomy 4:32 there is a mention of God creating humans and the world. Identity is a key part of the Bible. It gives us understanding that we were talking to God and lets us know our place in the world. 1 Corinthians 12:27 is possibly the on that stands out most to me. That verse alone is strong enough to make an entire crowd stop and think about where they stand in Christ and what their identity is life really is. The Bible also states one that is heard a lot in today’s world because of the abortion conflict. Jeremiah 1:5 is used time and time again by prolife activists to show that abortion is not a way of life. For Christians the meaning of life is one of those questions that are usually better answered by themselves than by nonbelievers. They have an understanding on what their purpose of living on earth actually means. Case in point, Jeremiah 29:11 informs people know that there is a future for them after life on earth. Proverbs 16:4 also says that God has a purpose for everyone on earth. Moral is used so much in everyday life that there is no surprise the Bible mentions it numerous times. In Romans 13:8-10 the Bible talks about love and the moral you should have when keeping the commandments in your everyday life. Matthew 6:24 shows the moral one should have when “trying to serve two masters”(ESV...

...Kyle McCollough 19 October 2012 English Language and Composition The Issue of Abortion - A Modest Proposal The issue of abortion has become an increasingly controversial topic over the past few decades, especially in the United States. Before the 1970s, the word “fetology” had not even come into existence. As knowledge of this subject expanded, the development of the Ultrasound led to many discoveries about the human fetus. Unfortunately, another fruit of the Ultrasound’s discovery was that of abortion. Statistics show that “39% of deaths in the United States are due to abortion”, making it the number one reason of deaths in the country ("ABORTION: The Number One Cause Of American Deaths.") Additionally, the total average of worldwide cases of abortion adds up to “115,000”. Yet the rate of abortions in America is about “3,700 per day”, which puts the percentage of abortions in the U.S. at only 3% ("Abortion Statistics." Abortion Statistics) This is certainly not only a crime in America, but a worldwide epidemic. Countless precious and unborn lives have been lost in this relentless act of inhumanity, and it seems that their “silent scream” has yet to be heard ("Silent Scream.") Of course there have been organizations, websites, and campaigns to raise awareness about this robbery of innocent life. Pro-life institutions such as the American Life League advocate the protection of unborn lives through adoption and donations for the cause of anti-abortion. Various websites...

This controversial topic has caused many deaths and several heated arguments between the two separate parties of opinion. The arguments between pro-life and pro-choice supporters have been long and can be very violent. This argument will continue to go on for years, but based on your opinion there are legitimate arguments for both sides. It all depends on personal opinion whether or not each side can say with certainty that the other one is wrong. The two sides to abortion are pro-life and pro-choice, and this is an issue that politicians face in every election, and it plays a big role in how many citizens decide on who they are going to vote for in the election. The many court cases that involved abortion have influenced United States history in a big way. These court cases include: Stenberg v. Carhart, Roe v. Wade, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. ...Ethics, Who am I? How did I get here? Diana Maionchi GCU Ethics NURS 437V Professor Jean Gordon September 1, 2012 Ethics, Who am I? How did I get here? We are born with familial genes but whom we are is greatly influenced by our physical surroundings, our parents or family, and our cultural and spiritual beliefs. I have been fortunate enough to be born in the United States, which has provided me with many riches in life to include education. This education provides me with the resources necessary to make sound clinical decisions about my nursing practice. My morality is based on guidelines that have become a natural language and behavior that has instilled how things ought to be and society has accepted. (Purtilo & Doherty, 11/2010, p. 6) I am a practicing Catholic, which deeply influences how I respect life and how I contribute to the community in which I live. Christian values and morals are guiding principles, which help us lead our community and make it strong. As stated in the Bible, “In order for God’s word to take root, believers must do more than merely listen to it. They must act upon it.” (King James, 1:17-18) Simple guiding principles such as these lead us in life, community and our professions. When we provide care we are not only using our clinical skills we are using moral ethical thought to assist us in what is right or wrong for our patients. Has the physician really listened to what the patient is stating their desires are? We are with our patients...

...Kellie, Your paper is great you packed a lot of information in it. You defiantly made your point on how Roe vs Wade had huge influence over a woman’s right to choose therefore shaping society. It is interesting that the rights that women have today are because so many people questioned them and fought for them. I do believe that every woman should have the right to choose what is best for them. I did not realize that abortions dated back to the New Testament, I always figured that this was a modern thing. Everyone seems to have a very strong feeling one way or another on abortion I believe that the Supreme Court did the right thing by granting women the right to privacy which entitles them the right to abortion. I have not read too much about...

...Abortion Could it be Ethical Kelanah Hubbard SOC120 Introduction to Ethics and Social Responsibility Prof. Jennifer Murphy September 3, 2012 Could you imagine witnessing a child have surgery at 21 weeks gestation for spina bifida, outside of the womb and then be placed back inside? Would you agree with the mother aborting the child if there were no chance of adverse side effects from surgery and the child was going to have a normal birth in 3-4 months? “As the surgeon was closing the womb, the miracle happened. Baby Samuel pushed his hand out of the womb and grabbed the surgeon’s finger. Photographer Michael Clancy caught this astonishing act on film. And in that instant, Clancy went from being prochoice to being prolife. As he put it, “I was totally in shock for two hours after the surgery…. I know abortion is wrong now---it’s absolutely wrong.” (Alcorn, 2000, pg.33) Abortion and whether it is right or wrong ethically and what might be some of the opinions and ethical solutions, has always been a big debate and will be covered more. Utilitarianism argues that given a set of choices, the act we should choose is that which produces the best results for the greatest number affected by that choice. I believe that is the best solution for the crisis of abortion because it would make more people have to weigh their options and truly think about the choice they are about to make. People in society these days make decisions very selfishly and do not think about what is...

...Jenna Mentus Andrew Calis English 102, Section 61 Short Write 3 Control is the key, to take the victory! This is often heard at high school and middle school sporting events, a cheer chanted by the cheerleaders. This cheer though, is often true when it comes to American politics. Through out the years, we hear of congressmen, supreme court judges, and governors resigning from office. Then we are faced with the question, why? Could it be because they really do want to spend more time with family and enjoy life? Political experts, like Dan Schnur, seem to think not. Instead, Schnur suggests in “The Problem With the Middle Ground” that former politicians, such as Bart Stupak, are too much of “moderates” for government. Schnur’s argument is that once either party gets the vote of moderates and obtains power, the use of moderates is no longer needed. Schnur’s use of pathos in his article is much underlying. It isn’t until the end of his article we feel anything. He ends with, “That’s why Senator Arlen Spector is now a Democrat, why Senator Evan Bayh is not running for re-election, and why Bart Stupak is about to become a former member of Congress.” He provides us with the many examples of moderates who are either no longer needed, or have had to change their views completely. Each of these men stood firmly for causes, favored and rejected by both parties. Once either party gained control, they had no use for the moderates. The pressure from Congress and social groups cause...

...Abortion is one of the most persistently controversial and debated issues in American politics, culture, and media today. While it is depicted as a two-sided argument, with constituents being either prochoice or prolife, the debate over abortion is overwhelmingly multifaceted and involves an extensive look into the healthcare, biology, ethics, morality, and constitutional rights that affect the issue. It is definitively impractical to generate a logically consistent position on abortion without being subject to abandoning another beliefs, let alone attempting to find a middle ground. Yet with any heated debate, the issues cannot methodically be traced into the confines of black and white. In trying to vindicate or denounce abortion, it is often necessary to observe the grey as we attempt to deduce whether, if ever, abortion can be justified. The abortion debate begins with the moral status of the fetus If the fetus has no rights then the abortion is not an issue, but if the fetus does indeed have rights, then abortion does not solely concern the freedom of the mother, rather it constitutes the deliberate destruction of a human being with personal freedom. However, in the cases of self-defense, just war, and capital punishment, don’t we a society allow the murder of human beings, each with their own set of personal freedoms? Implicit in the claim that it is unethical to kill a human being deliberately is the idea that we have rights because we are human beings therefore can...
