...Sleep Deprivation Psy / 240 Alexander Raftice August 23, 2013 I can say that the one time that I have had very little sleep is when I did this project in my high school psychology class where I deprived my body of sleep for four whole days. The way it affected my mood was really unpredictable. One moment I would be fine and happy others I would be irritable to a fault. Anyways the first day I was fine and functioned well the whole next day. On day two I started to slur my speech and had issues staying awake so I was getting irritable because I was tired. The third day I felt completely numb in side and nothing could seem to reach through the haze I was in and on the fourth and final day I was starting to hallucinate which I figured was a bad sign and stopped the experiment. According to the DSM IV, some psychiatric disorders have fatigue as a major symptom. Included are: major depressive disorder (includes postpartum blues), minor depression, diathermia, mixed anxiety-depression, SAD and bipolar disorder. Stress is the number one cause of short-term sleeping difficulties, according to sleep experts. Common triggers include school- or job-related pressures, a family or marriage problem and a serious illness or death in the family. Usually the sleep problem disappears when the stressful situation passes. However, if short-term sleep problems such as insomnia aren't managed properly from the beginning, they can persist long after the original stress...

...Emotional intelligence is ability to understand our own emotions and those of others and to apply this information to our daily lives (Lilienfeld, Lynn, Namy, Woolf, 2009). It’s the ability to perceive, understand, manage and use emotions to guide thoughts and actions (Goldman, 1996). Besides that, according to three studies about emotional intelligence and its influences on academic performance, people can also know that emotional intelligence is also a predictor of academic performance and studying success. All three articles did describe three different study methods and different goals; however, they all practiced on college student. The first study, “The role of trait emotional intelligence in academic performance and deviant behavior at school”, is about trait relationship between emotional intelligence and cognitive ability and academic performance. For examples, student with high emotional intelligence are likely to absence and excluded from school and most emotional intelligence effects continue to exits even when that person has controlling their personality variance (Petrides, Frederickson & Furnham, 2002). The second article, “Trait emotional intelligence and preference for intuition and deliberation: Respective influence on academic performance”, considers about the role of trait emotional intelligence and preference for intuition and deliberation in short-term academic performance. Its results are relationships between trait emotional intelligence, preference for...

...Psychological Disorders By: Jennifer PSY / 240 Psychiatric disorders are disorders of psychological function suffiently severe that they require treatment. Psychiatric disorder can be difficult to diagnose because they psychiatrist or clinical psychologist must first decide whether the problem is pathological, or if it is in fact an extreme of normal human variation. Currently there is no way to identify a specific brain pathology associated with different disorders; diagnosis usually relies on the patients symptoms. This paper will discuss four psychiatric disorders: Schizophrenia, Depression Mania, Anxiety, and Tourette syndrome. Schizophrenia affects about 1% of the world’s population. Over 2-3% of the population shows symptoms. Some people only ever experience one, maybe two episode and get better, while others go through periods of being healthy, which is also known as remission. There are other cases where patients suffer long-term and are usually severe impairments. Schizophrenia literally means “split mind.” Many people often confuse schizophrenia with the meaning split personality-which is something entirely different. Split personality is a disorder known as multiple personality disorder or syndrome. Symptoms of schizophrenia are divided into two categories, negative and positive. Positive symptoms include thought disorders, hallucinations, and delusions. Thought disorders is disorganized and irrational thinking, and is one of the most important symptoms. For...
