...intervened. Hat I would see would be some of the other classmates making fun of his looks and the way he would speak. He would never say anything back because that would just be like throwing gas on a fire for them to make fun of him. Sometimes the verbal taunting would escalate into physical altercations. Although, I was no angel at school, I hated to see someone who had certain disabilities being bullied. One day I was coming out of the main building and saw three of our classmates pushing him around. I got so angry that I jumped in the middle and started pushing them back; eventually we all began to fight. I know this sounds like I am bragging, but I beat them until they couldn’t see out of their blackened and swollen eyes. What did I think of the event? Well the bullying was uncalled for against this individual, but of course looking back, all bullying is uncalled for. Looking back at the time, I was satisfied with my actions. But now I find my actions repulsive. But, sometimes a person has to physically intervene to protect others. If you can avoid the physical altercations then you should. To this day we are still good friends and even the ones that I beat senseless have become good friends too. You have heard the phrase “sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you?” Well that is not true. Words can hurt, hence cyber bullying has become a huge problem, but that is another paper. Bullying is wrong in any form. But defending one’s self isn’t. Proverbs...

...Maria Barraza Until It Hurts America’s Obsession with Youth Sports and How It Harms Our Kids. By Mark Hyman. Beacon Press Boston, Massachusetts, 2009. ISBN-13:978-0-8070-2119-4 $15 paper. Youth sports today have made the sport less fun for the kids and more about the parent’s dreams and aspirations for their kids. This book is a perfect example of how youth sports have become an obsession for parents more than the players themselves. In Until It Hurts Mark Hyman gives the history of several youth sports and also talks about the relationships between parents and athletes. Mark Hyman wrote this book to help parents realize the mistakes they make when pushing kids too far and to the point of injury. The author uses explanation and analysis to present a subject or to clarify his idea. Hyman interviewed several parents, coaches, athletes, doctors, psychologists, tutors, college recruiters, and former professional athletes in his book telling stories about athletes who are pushed too hard and what sacrifices were made. As a parent it is hard to understand how parents go to these extremes for their children but Hyman does not criticize these parents he is only giving their side of the story. He understands this all too well because he was one of those parents with his own son Ben. Hyman’s son Ben was a baseball player who had played since he was little. In the introduction Hyman talks about finding a picture of his son out in the snow which he describes as being a perfect greeting...

...wanted to combine each other's chain to make one long one. At that point I saw a huge amount of teamwork and assurance that the chain would stay intact. There was only one team that decided they wanted to go solo, until the very last minutes where they were convinced to join with the majority. The dream team had to be the two tables that had all of the supplies needed to accomplish the challenge with ease. Those teams fortunately got the paper bags with paper, scissors, and a stapler with staples inside. During the challenge, I noticed that there wasn’t too much stress or seriousness; everyone was having fun and trying to put themselves above their neighboring group and get more chains linked together. Moreover, my group as a whole was just like the entire class, calm and just having fun, with a small flame of competition. I felt that I was the leader in my group, instructing my peers on what they should be doing. I wasn’t breathing on their necks making sure they were doing everything perfectly, but letting them go at their pace and not pushing them too much. My group had a smile on their face the whole time and were laughing the whole way through. I do think that as a group, we worked well together as well as effectively, by each member doing something different, but...

...Motivational Methods Paper HCS/325 June 11, 2012 Susan Greenwood Motivational Methods Paper In this paper I have decided to tell you about three motivational techniques that I will implement into my staff. The three techniques that I will be going over are: targets, rewards, and incentives; make the work place fun; and using the P.E.R.F.O.R.M model to help increase potential. I will go into detail about what each technique entails and explain how each change will affect my organization. By the end of this paper you should have three more motivational techniques that you could consider for your organization as well. The first technique that we will be talking about is targets, rewards, and incentives. To do this you first have to know your team. In order to set out rewards and incentives you have to first understand what motivates your team and gets them set in working towards their goals that you have set out. The CV Centre. (1998-2012) states that “Motivating a team is always easier if you fully understand that they may not necessarily be motivated by the same things as you. The most effective teams are those that feel valued and supported but also feel that they are progressing and developing through the completion of challenging tasks. If a team understands company objectives, they are much more likely to want to work harder towards their achievement. Also, most people tend to respond well to being given the opportunity to make decisions and take on additional responsibilities...

...Norm Violation Norms are defined as the expectations, or rules of behavior, that develop out of values. For this project, I was required to violate a norm. The norm that I chose to violate was to push my wife Erica through the Wal-Mart store in a children’s ambulance buggy. By doing this activity, my wife and I deviated from the norms that are expected of a customer in a department store. The status of “customer” normally includes the activities of pushing around a buggy, gathering the items that you would like to purchase, purchasing the items, and then leaving the store. My wife and I did this, but we had a little fun with it... We arrived at the Wal-Mart store around 10:00 PM, just to pull up next to a large shopping buggy that was designed to look like an ambulance. The ambulance was designed with a seat for two children inside, which also turned out to be just enough space for my very petite wife. It was a little bit late, but at 10 o’clock there are still quite a few customers at Wal-Mart. Erica climbed into the ambulance while we were still out in the parking lot. The hardest part was for the two of us to look as if we were shopping, while keeping a straight face. A few people that passed by us on their way out to their car’s. They all just stared at us and starting talking with their hands over their mouths and you just knew that they were talking about us. When we entered the store we just went on our way through the store shopping for things. Then before it was all...

...Science Fun: How to Make a Homemade Thermometer This project is really interesting and fun; however, it does need close adult supervision to complete it. This is a really fun addition to a homemade weather station! Project Supplies: Tap water Rubbing alcohol (do not drink this) Clear, narrow-necked plastic bottle (11-ounce water bottles work well) Food coloring Clear plastic drinking straw Modeling clay Project Directions: 1. Pour equal parts of tap water and rubbing alcohol into the bottle, filling about 1/8 to a 1/4 of the bottle. 2. Add a couple of drops of food coloring and mix. 3. Put the straw in the bottle, (DO NOT DRINK MIXTURE) but don't let the straw touch the bottom. 4. Use the modeling clay to seal the neck of the bottle, so the straw stays in place. 5. Now hold your hands on the bottle and watch what happens to the mixture in the bottle. Project Explanations: Just like any thermometer, the mixture expands when it is warmed. This makes the liquid no longer fit in the bottom of the bottle. As the alcohol expands the colored mixture moves up through the straw. If the bottle were to get very hot, the liquid would have come through the top of the straw. You can watch the thermometer and see how the liquid changes throughout the day. What happens if your thermometer is in shadow or in sunlight? What happens when it gets colder? How does wind affect the thermometer? In order to accurately read the temperature, you will need to buy...

...Predatory Lending: The Sub-Prime Mortgage and Payday Industry Andrew Huppman Bloomsburg University Author Note This paper was prepared for Markets and Institutions, Finance 323, taught by Professor Geyfman Abstract Predatory lenders are growing at an alarming rate; in this paper I will provide an examination of predatory lending patterns and the effects on the markets and consumers. Predatory lending is defined as the practice in which a loan is made to a borrower in the hope or expectation that the borrower will default. (Predatory, N.D.) The market for short-term loans have only been around for the past twenty years, however, has expanded at such a rate that there are now more short-term lenders in America than there are Starbucks and McDonald’s. (Center, 2011) Borrowers of this financial service lack necessary information to choose financial products, do not see themselves as having any other financial options, and are enticed by the ease of approval. Predatory lenders are not concerned with the risk. A subprime loan can be approved with as little as proof of a pay stub and requires no credit checks. Most loans are short term which tricks consumers into believing their costs will be minimal. In reality, these short-term rates force borrowers to pay annual percentage rates (APR) exponentially larger than anticipated. In today’s market there is a wide variety of predatory lending practices. The main culprits are predatory mortgage lending practices and payday loans...

...Nobody compares to the two individuals that taught me that and I am about to introduce you to them within this paper. You are going to be in for such a fascinating barrage of information about two people that if it were not for them I literally would not be here, but I would also not be the individual I am today. Looking back on my “short” thirty nine years of life and imagining it without the influence of these two great individuals, would be like imagining that you could ride a bicycle to Hawaii, it would just be impossible. I hope you brought your glass of sweet tea, a soft chair and an open heart to receive the information about these two people that have done everything to the best of their ability to make sure that I succeed and that I am a man of my word. I never realized how my wonderful loving grandparents were slowly and patiently molding me into the man I am today, but through the lessons and experiences I can say I owe everything I am and will be to these two wonderful individuals. My two maternal grandparents are absolutely the best two individuals that could be in my life and my true deep love for them began at a very young age. It all started building inside me at the age of five when my grandmother picked me up from the house one summer day and took me to the golf course with her to teach me the most beautiful and highly respectable sport of golf. It was not fun and games at first, because she didn't just want me to learn how to play, she wanted me to learn every small...

...been a team player and very outgoing ever since I was a child. I get this from my older siblings who always strived for the top and always wanted things to be better as we got older. Assessment I learned from this assessment what my main targets are as a person and what part I play in a team. It is important to know where you stand so you can build and learn about yourself to make yourself more successful. To be successful you have to always look at other peoples’ point of view about you. This helps everyone learn what changes need to be made to be more successful in life. This could be for school or even just at home with your family members. Knowing where I stand on paper makes me want to stay a motivator. I have always been a big motivator and I will plan on staying a big motivator. Without me a lot of my team members would probably stay in their shells and not want to participate in the different assignments, games or plans that we have to put together. Someone has to make people talk and make people express themselves. How else would we know as a society how people feel about a specific topic if nobody is pushing people to speak up or act upon what they feel needs to be done. This is very vital in a team relationship because it makes everyone feel like they are part of a team and don’t feel left out. Motivators make people feel more comfortable and this makes people want to talk more and express themselves more openly. Rather than barking at people and...

...some it is being made fun of and for others it is the biggest person in the neighborhood beating them up and taking their things. No matter what circumstance and form it comes in being bullied can make a person feel depressed, hurt and alone. In this paper I will be talking about why bullying is a issue to study in human development, the three components or types of bullying behavior, how gender and sexual orientation influence styles of bullying, how self-esteem affects bullying, and also how family interactions are affected by bullying. Why bullying is an issue to studying human development Bullying is defined as being about power, control, and abuse over another. It can lead to physical injury, social issues, emotional problems, and maybe even death. This is why bullying is important issue to study in human development because children or adolescence that are bullied can be at great risk for mental health problems. This includes depression, anxiety, headaches, and even problems adjusting to school. These are not the only problems that can occur a greater risk of substance abuse and violent behavior toward others can happen later on in life. Three components or types of bullying behavior Most experts may agree that the desire to harm another person is what sets bullying apart from just being mean. There is actually three components of bullying which are power imbalance, repetitive action, and intentional action. Power imbalance can be physical or psychological...

...Imagine you are doing your weekly shopping, pushing your cart down the canned vegetable aisle, and there are no labels on the cans. Just varying sizes of aluminum cans. How would know the difference between a brand named canned of peas versus the store brand? How would you even know it was canned peas? Labeling is a key element in product identification and marketing. During this essay, I will guide you through the process of identifying the key aspects of your custom label design and the execution of creating a label. The label is the face of your product, so you’ll want as much pertinent information as possible without making the label too “busy” and cluttered. It has been said, “It’s what’s inside that counts”, but that assumes you can get inside to find out. What form of representation does your product have? You certainly cannot be at every location of your product offering details and samples of your product, so how do you tell people what’s inside? You create a label custom for your product that not only markets the product in an enticing manner, but also offers pertinent details and selling points about the product inside. You will also have mandatory details that must be listed depending on the product, so research into legally obligated details is also necessary. Clearly there are thousands of different labels anywhere from shipping labels to packaging labels and everything in between. Identifying your purpose is the first step in creating your label...

...Andrew Bortolussi April 15, 2012 Sociology Paper assignment Developing Social Imagination So with this Sociology project, I have watched and analyzed the movie “No Strings Attached” starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. Was forced to watch the movie, but when actually watching the movie, I actually liked it and thought it be a great movie to do a paper on. Everyone can relate to every aspect of the movie. In the movie Ashton Kutcher plays Adam, and Natalie Portman plays Emma. The two met at a young age, had a funny moment together. He spills out the reason he was at camp was because of parents getting a divorce, and started to cry. Emma’s reaction was to make fun of Adam and call him out for it but comforted him when she realized it was serious. After the sad moment, Adam randomly asks if he can finger Emma, which ends up being a funny moment. Then they meet again at a frat party and they had another moment but it was more towards feelings towards each other. It was a pajama frat party and everyone was dressed up in their slutty pajamas and guys wore their boxers or pajamas. Emma shows up to the frat party in a onesie pajama to visit her best friend and that’s, when she runs into Adam and they connect for the first time. It went so good that Emma even invited him to go to something in the morning with her. But failed to mention that the something in the morning was the funeral of her father. It was an awkward but sweet moment between the two because he...

...morning paper or to a coupon book standing in a store line we think, "yeah! $1.00 off my next 2 boxes of hamburger helper"! Better yet, we think of how much money we are saving ourselves at that checkout line as if we are playing a game of..., I am going to save more moo-la, also know as money, than I thought this week and I will have more funds in my pocket for this weekends fun! However, what if we looked at kindness as a coupon? I believe that we look at our lives day-to-day, more and more as if we are expecting someone to be nice to us. Not giving it a second clipping about what change we are saving by being kind to one another. Saving $1.00 in our bank of kindness, for that rainy day of, "I hate my life"....; also known as kindness, should be something we all think about . I mean, would it even take as long as scanning our eyes over the Sunday paper, looking online for coupon codes, or looking for those red clearance stickers? I believe we should take our kindness and think of it more as a savings in our coupon bank for a remarkable hoping for a $1.00 saved in the Universe of life. If I would consider it a savings of money, could I not think of it as a deposit on my own debts of unkindness? Does life and kindness not go hand in hand? Should I not recall the old saying "being kindness is goodness"..., if my parents didn't teach me after all someone had to teach me how to save a buck myself. I believe that looking into the eyes of a stranger. Being kind and pushing for nice...
