...Raising the federal minimum wage has become more of a consistently pressing issue in the United States since President Obama spoke of the matter during his 2014 State of the Union Address, where he stated that he intended on raising the minimum wage by 40%, from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. While he and his supporters argue that this would work most beneficially for America’s economy and would not result in any loss of jobs for citizens, others argue that, on the contrary, this would drastically affect current minimum wage earning employees and would also cut almost 500,000 jobs on top of other detrimental consequences. While both sides consider legitimate concerns, the argument still remains on if the risk is worth an unknown outcome. Presently,...

...Furthermore, it has been maintained that the primary argument advanced in favor of raising the minimum wage is that it would improve the overall standard of living for minimum wage workers by providing them with a more appropriate income level to handle the cost of living increases. A boost to economic growth is another potential advantage of increasing the minimum wage, as consumer spending typically increases with increases in wages. A higher minimum wage would put more discretionary dollars in the pockets of millions of workers, money that would then flow to retailers and other businesses. However, opponents of an increase argue that raising the minimum wage would likely result in wages and salaries increasing across the board, thereby substantially increasing operating expenses for companies that would then increase the prices of products and services to cover their increased labor costs. Increased prices mean a general increase in the cost of living that could...

...personalities often find themselves in interesting, it not bizarre situations, which often find their way to newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radio broadcasts, and TV news. Each particular situation calls for a specific action, but the initial goal is to ensure that the subsequent effects of the controversies are minimized. There are several ways available to achieve this but all PR specialists agree that more than anything, effective communication holds the key in solving all problems. The current research looked into the different roles that public relations play in order to build a reputation for Hollywood stars. In particular, the research aimed to address four questions: 1. When do the PR personnel of a Hollywood star need to consider rebuilding reputation and image? 2. Should a Hollywood star consider using negative PR for remaining in the top headlines of news? 3. Can a badly tarnished image and reputation of a Hollywood star be ever rebuilt? 4. What could be the best reputation rebuild strategies for a star suffering from a tarnished image for creating a long-term comeback? The Hollywood...

...Problem/Cause and solution In his article, Brandon King gives an unequivocal answer to the question “Is the so-called ‘American Dream’ dead, alive or on hold?” He believes that the ideals and values of the American Dream are very much alive even though many people have lost confident in the Great Recession. Under the difficult economic circumstances today, Brandon redefines the American Dream as the potential to work for an honest, secure way of life and save for the future according to the more intense spending habits of Americans. In order to living the American Dream, Brandon lists solutions to three main problems, inequality, economic insecurity and eroded faith in the American Dream. In sum, he believes that though existing, inequality is not a reason for the lost of American Dream in the poor and supporting the top businesses would help the recovery of economy. He also highlights the values and rules of the American Dream, which would help living and inheritance of this spirit. From my perspective, I agree with the main problems he concludes but for some of his solutions, I stand on the opposite site of the author. I think narrowing the income gap is very significant and so do supporting businesses, while the dependence of the spirit itself is in the less important position. Following are my analysis of each argument. According to the article, inequality is regarded as the most worrisome problem by many people. In contrast with economists like Robert Reich and Paul Krugman...

...Drew Cummins 12/8/2013 You Decide If I was to advise the president I would make sure that there are two main focuses. First is that we need to get people back to work, second we need to do something to change the trend of falling prices. When I look at the recommendation of the other people on the panel I see Kathy Lee’s sticking out. The fastest way to get a large number of people back on the job would be some sort of public works program. Cutting government spending and raising taxes would make that pretty much impossible. If you were to look more at Alison’s scenario of increasing government spending and lowering taxes, you could get everyone back to work rebuilding infrastructure, but in the long term you would have a hard time sustaining the expense. I would try to raise taxes in certain sectors, I do not subscribe to trickle-down economics and believe that if you were to keep the tax levels relatively low on the poor/lower brackets and increase the rate on the rich/higher brackets it would be a better solution that across the board cuts. If our prices are falling then this needs to be addressed for two different reasons. First America is not typically considered to be the cheap option when comparing goods on a worldwide wide scale. They make cars in India for less than $1000 but we would never let them be imported due to safety issues, we are not set up to compete this way on the world stage. The second reason is that stability is one of the greatest assets...

Gaga, real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, appeared at "One America Appeal," the Hurricane Relief concert held over the weekend in College Station, Texas to support victims of the recent storms that ravished four U.S. states and territories. The "Poker Face" singer had a million reasons to lend her voice to a benevolent cause. Lady Gaga joined all five living former presidents: George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. She serenaded the crowd with some of her popular tunes. Other entertainers like Lyle Lovett, Yolanda Adama, the band Alabama, and others joined in on the celebration of hope....

...Mental Health/Crisis Intervention Resource File Part 1 www.samaritansnyc.org First Quote "People who talk about suicide won't really do it." This quote gained my interest because I feel there are people who still think this is true. If someone is talking about suicide I feel probably has at least thought about it. Second Quote "If a person is determined to kill him or herself nothing is going to stop them." Basically if this quote was actually true then all of the professionals and others in support of the professionals trying to save lives and prevent suicides are basically wasting their time. Its very important for us to stand up and intervene when someone is thinking about suicide. We can make a big difference in a persons life by helping them remember why they should live. Third Quote "Talking about suicide may give someone the idea." In order to address the topic of suicide we must discuss it. If we simply acted as if this never happens then we would be doing a serious injustice to our loved ones and the community. www.cancercare.com First Quote “How can a cancer survivor deal with fear of recurrence?” I feel this is valid because a lot of have cancer, go through the treatments and then it comes back. With dealing with it and focusing on having a positive attitude you are better equipped to face and conquer it no matter how many times it comes back Second Quote I've finished...

Fees for Services Fees for service have been charged by nonprofits for years, but research shows that this is becoming an increasingly large proportion of nonprofit budgets (Gray, Oster, and Weinberg, 2004). Therefore, Housing Helpers will not charge for services. Any monies that are paid for services will be paid by “Housing Helpers.” A Fund Raising Event One annual fund raising event Housing Helpers will have is their “Shop ‘til it Stops” event at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Orchard Supply Hardware, Do it Best, Menards, Sears and True Value. This event allows each of the home improvement hardware stores to have 15% of their sales revenue on one day, specifically January 1st, contributed to our mission-driven organization. Housing Helpers will use the funds as store credit to purchase necessary materials for the home improvement projects planned throughout the year. I grew up in the 90s under a strict household I had in my life grandparents, mom and uncle that raised me my entire life. Having an education, being a normal child and just having parents in my life made such an great impact and how I am today. But today society shows that without any parents or lack of parenting proves why kids act the way they do in this generation. Hillary also made a good point about Donald’s suggestion of lowering taxes for the top 1%. She doesn't see how this will benefit us in any way, but instead feels that we should focus on doing more for the middle class.”I think it's time that the wealthy and corporations paid their fair share to support this country.” Hillary strongly believes that rebuilding the middle class, and helping them get an education will boost our economy. ...Concordia University – School of Management MBA – 506 The Euro in Crisis: Decision Time at the European Central Bank LaRisha Baker Professor: Tom DiCorcia November 30th, 2014 Introduction The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank for Europe's single currency, the euro. Its main task is to maintain the euro's purchasing power and maintain price stability in the euro area. The euro area comprises of 18 European Union (EU) countries, of which Greece is included (European Central Bank, n.d.). As the EBC holds extraordinary decision-making power, this will in effect have an impact on the financial economy of Greece. From this case analysis, the ECB must decide whether to purchase or to not purchase Greek sovereign debt (Trumbull, Roscini & Choi, 2011). The Problem After the sub-prime mortgage burst in the United States, this sent reverberating shock waves throughout world economies. As the US economy tightened, economies around the world were also affected; adversely affected highly leveraged banks in the Eurozone. Though providing financial bailouts were against the Eurozone philosophy, with fear looming that Greece would default on its debt, this put pressure on Eurozone members to intervene (Trumbull, Roscini & Choi, 2011). For the euro to maintain stability, a bailout for Greece was imminent. If no Greek bailout were made available, this could potentially upset the stability of the entire EU and the euro. The ECB had been slow to act, in part...

...Name of paper Felicia Hughes Child Family & Society: SOC312 Melda Gaskins Date submitted Introduction Urie Bronfenbrenner led to the development of the ecological theories that shape development. He depicts four systems that contain norms, rules and norms that influence a child’s development. Renamed ‘bioecological systems theory’, emphasis is that the biological changes in a child are the primary sources of any development while the external factors are huge contributors ‘will steer the development’, (Addison, J.T, 1992). It has been held that the body supports and directs all body actions and operations influenced by the outward interaction with the environment. The microsystem encompasses the relationships and interactions a child has with her immediate surroundings (Berk, 2000). Structures in the microsystem include family, school, neighborhood, or childcare environments. At this level, relationships have impact in two directions - both away from the child and toward the child. For example, a child’s parents may affect his beliefs and behavior; however, the child also affects the behavior and beliefs of the parent. Bronfenbrenner calls these bi-directional influences, and he shows how they occur among all levels of environment. The interaction of structures within a layer and interactions of structures between layers is key to this theory. At the microsystem level, bi-directional influences are strongest and have the greatest impact on the child. However...

...In this society, it is usually assumed that one is either single or in some form of monogamous relationship. At best, it is sometimes considered acceptable to play the field if one is not in a committed relationship. If one is in a committed relationship, it is with one person only, and any sexual and/or romantic involvement outside the relationship is cheating. Both of these situations, playing the field and cheating are still often subject to the classic double standard of being more acceptable for men and women. Long before written history, primitive clans and tribes were living within small, highly inter-dependent social structures. Many of these groups had some type of ceremony marking the forming of a union or marriage between two opposite sex partners. It appears that since we began living in structured social groups, humans have adhered to the belief that formal unions of two people work best for maintaining a healthy, functioning society. Within different societies, independent unions of two people were considered the best way to secure food and shelter, defend against outside aggressors, and raise offspring. As societies evolved, the marriage bond took on increased significance within each culture. One of the most universal aspects of the marriage union to be perpetuated cross-culturally was monogamy. Yet despite this proclivity towards marriage, and insistence that the marriage partners remain monogamous, human beings have been engaging in non-monogamous activities...

Sadly, a corrupt government, struggling economy, and lack of emphasis on gender equality and education, prevents Liberia from rebuilding. Currently, Liberia is in transition from a dictatorship to democracy, in which the President is the dominant force in politics. Various politicians have formerly been involved with differing scandals of corruption. Flawed government hinders development in growing nations. A 2013 UN Human Rights Report...
