Country vs. Rap music

“I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.” Said by the famous Billy Joel. No matter what music you enjoy it also does not make a difference. There are many different genres, but two that seem to be the complete opposite are country and rap. Yes, country and rap are on two completely different ends of the spectrum lyrics and message wise, but they both do a great job at portraying a story or getting you excited about something.

If music can do one thing best it is that it can tell a story. Musicians and writers spend tons of time on the songs that they produce and some have so much feeling into it that people can really relate. Whether it is rap or country they both can make a story out of their lyrics. Now just because I say they make a story doesn’t mean it is some fairytale story where everyone lives happily ever after. I have heard my fair share of country and rap music and both can have some songs that can make someone want to weep. Those are the type of stories people can relate to. When just a song that you heard on the radio can make you sad or make you happy you know it’s a good song. That’s what these two type of genres have in common. Both kinds poor their hearts into their music and can make you feel emotions that you don’t even feel in your every day life. Now that’s something to sing about! In todays society people are very quick to judge. They’ll judge you even for the type of music you listen too. You may hear people say that anyone who listens to country is a “redneck” or a “hillbilly.” You might also hear people say that anyone who listens to rap is a bad influence or are “gangsters.” From those two descriptions you can tell the completely different types of music they both are. Country is more of a southern tone. Its more appropriate because it doesn’t vulgar language near as much as rap music does. Rap music is little more rated for kids older in age. Most parents would not like their children listening to music that uses many curse words. A good percentage of rap music talks about drugs, sex, killing, and many more inappropriate things, but most of the songs relate to the artist backgrounds, which connects to the telling a story part. Country singers usually talk about driving in their trucks with pretty girls, love, camping, and or a lot of outdoor activities. This is how they differ from each other, but just because you listen to a certain kind of music doesn’t describe who you are. Some people just enjoy listen to a different genre then others, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. What is one thing everybody loves to do in the shower? That’s right. Belt their lungs out. Doesn’t matter if you are a good or a bad singer it is just plain fun and gets you excited to do something as simple as taking a shower. That is another thing these two genres have in common. They are both extremely great at getting you excited or pumped up for something. Whether it be a sports event, work, going to a party, anything! You can pop some headphones in crack up your radio in your car and just sing along and feel happy. That’s what is so great about all music. Singers and song writers put a lot of hard work into making music that is going to get stuck in your head or easy for you to sing along to song you can enjoy it just as much as them. A great song will get stuck in your head and you will catch yourself singing it all day and being happy while you are doing it. So whether your getting down to country or jamming out to rap just make sure your enjoying it and having fun. So even though country and rap are on two completely different ends of the spectrum lyrics and message wise, they both do a great job at portraying a story or getting you excited about something. Whether you like to listen to country music or rap music that doesn’t define who you are. Everyone has their own taste, and everyone likes to express it on their own way. So do what you love and jam out to music that makes you happy! Either way musicians put tons of hard work into the music they create and I’m positive they don’t care who their fans are!

...fabric of hip-hop and rap music. It offers the viewer insight into the importance that rap assigns to the process of establishing authenticity while implicitly divulging the various dimensions of identity politics of race. We see that Jimmy B-Rabbit, despite being a white boy in an African-American dominated town is firmly grounded in several types of authenticity that facilitates his entry and success in the gangsta rap world. The first and most obvious dimension of rap authenticity is the racial. Jimmy being white and trying to rap immediately generates questions of cultural property and appropriation. In a black-dominated rap venue called The Shelter, Jimmy begins his rap battle with Lil Tic. We see that white involvement in black art forms are immediately problematic when Lil tic raps “they [audience] don’t laugh cuz you’re whack, they laugh cuz you’re white with a mic”. Jimmy’s presence in the battle is scorned because he is white and rap is considered to belong to black people. Lil Tic calls him a “wigger that invented rhymes for money”; a “wigger” is slang for a white person who tries to emulate or acquire African-American cultural behavior and tastes. The suggestion that Jimmy “rhymes for money” is the ultimate assertion of phoniness because for black people, rap is a way of life, not money. This rejection however envisages rap as part of an oral heritage, one that preserves a cultural past and signifies the social code shared by the oral community. Rap and hip-hop are an...

Country vs Rap

...Alexandra Casto English 0803 Fred Nolen 27 Feb. 2015 Compare and/or contrast essay Country vs. Rap Country music and rap music are two totally different musical genres. Despite their Musical differences^ there are some similarities in the concerts and shows the artists put on. There are also many differences between the two. Some of those differences include, the types of venues, the musical instruments, and the difference in shows and performances. The majority of country artists are Caucasian and the majority of rap artists are African American, so they bring different varieties of crowds. Over the years, the majority of most rap concerts are held at indoor venues such as basketball stadiums, indoor theaters, or hockey arenas. Some country concerts are held inside but most of the time are held outside. Another thing, many county artists perform at fairs and carnivals during the summer. The Jefferson County, TN fair has a country artist come every summer and preform. Before a country artist puts on a concert, it’s typical to have people in the parking lot tailgating and barbecuing before the show. However, at a rap concert most of the people just arrive a few minutes before the show actually starts. Additionally, more variances consist of musical instruments. Usually the only thing found at a rap concert is a DJ on stage spinning records. Although, at a country concert there is huge variety of musical instruments being used such as a banjo, piano...

...Campbell, aka. DJ Kool Herc, THE INVENTOR OF HIP-HOP, started to play some hip-hop music at block parties and that's how it all began. The music itself comes from Disco Rap, which is a lighter and funnier version of the hip-hop we know today. In the beginning the DJ's would only take the instrumental parts of songs and mix them while keeping a constant beat. After, the lyrics came in and TADAAA here is hip-hop you now know. But what were they singing about? Well before, people were trying to express their opinions their main theme was an ideal of equality and also as always, how bad their government was corrupted while today to be honest is only about women and how big their breast or their "derrière" are even though we can still find some really good music.  WHAT ARE THEY FIGHTING FOR? Originally, hip-hop was about bringing a whole community together. That's why it started the poor Black and Latino communities, they had to face poverty and their exile from the rest of society: it was one of the only ways to stay united. Today, with the popularization of Hip-Hop and its massive investments in massive culture, Hip Hop music has lost more and more of its original aim to become more appreciated by a larger part of the population. Is it good or bad? Your choice.   OLD SCHOOL HIP VS NEW SCHOOL HIP HOP Old School Hip Hop started in the early 70's and ended in the mid 80's, it was inspired by funk music. The new style was not really known yet and therefore had poor funding. The artists...

Rise Of Hip Hop Culture

...Impacting the Genre of Hip-Hop From Atlanta, to all corners of the country, the new wave of hip-hop is apparent and it’s here to stay. Coming from a small town in the southern part of Ohio, it may be a bit puzzling to put together how I’ve come to appreciate and find the ability to analyze a genre of music as profound and bodacious, as well as braggadocious and culture centric, as Hip-Hop is. The answer lies within what makes the genre so great, passion. I have been unendingly passionate about the lyrical schemes and powerful sounds of Hip-Hop since I was first introduced to the music around age ten. Fast-forward ten years later and my appreciation has grown exponentially....

Rock and Roll Has Lost the Ability to Effect Meaningful Societal Change

...Virginia Watkin Professor Dave Graham Music 118 November 26, 2013 Rock and Roll has Lost the Ability to Effect Meaningful Societal Change Music has often been said to be the universal language. Rock musicians especially learned to use the power of rock music and lyrics to effect powerful changes in society, most particularly in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The early age of Rock and Roll was an exciting time for the musicians, lyricists and the mass of young people who listened to them. While it may be that rock music in all of its genres of today can still prod listeners to champion for social change, the rock music market has fragmented so dramatically that rock and roll has lost the ability to impact mass sections of the population and has therefore, lost its unique voice and ability to effect real social change in US society. The turbulence of the 1960’s, due to the escalation of the conflict in Vietnam to a full out war, the assassination of both President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. and the push for civil rights for all people made for fertile ground for songwriters to encourage change for the better through their music. (Hibbard and Kaleialoha, p 122) Lyricists and composers worked in tandem to write songs to both inform the public and, in some cases, incite the public to take action against what was happening in, around and to the world. Songs such as “Blowin in the Wind, written by Bob Dylan in 1962 and “Ball of Confusion (that’s what the world...

Music Essay

...Sanders Music Appreciation Final Exam My comparison will go between two periods that was classic vs. romantic classical music composers were satisfied to stay and work within a definite boundary of what made up the acceptable music. In this era the chord resolutions were at all times the identical, and furthermore the connection between keys, sections, and movements, maintained proportion. On the other hand the Romantic composers extended these boundaries or rather limitations, and in place they brought in new chords, atypical key changes and in numerous ways went in opposition to the way they were made in the classical period Romantic period dealt with more emotions. Ludwig Van Beethoven - Symphony No. 5 in C Minor which is my favorite piece from the classical period and Franz Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody which consisted of great story telling through the music. Journal Review: Cross-Cultural Challenge in Product Placement

...PURPOSE Fundamentally, product placement roots in the USA, which is commonly considered to be an American phenomenon, and used primarily as a movie-based tactic. To define, product placement is the deliberate placement of branded products or services within media content. For example the scene where Will Smith drink Coca-Cola in film. As a result of global flow, and access to media content and technology, the practice of product placement has become media-neutral and spread across other cultures. Due to this circumstances, there is a need to develop an expanded understanding of how non-US consumers perceive such placements. Product placement like traditional forms of advertising, transmit and reflect the important symbolic meanings and values within a culture. To add in, consumer attitudes toward product placement may also vary depending on the fundamental cultural orientations and values of a particular society. In general, there are abundant cross-cultural comparisons of advertising and promotion but little is known regarding how consumers from different cultures perceive and process product placement in their mind. Other than that, there has also been very limited knowledge on how and to what extent the medium of placement affects perceptions of the tactic. The main purpose of this research is to examine: i. US and Korean college student consumers’ attitudes towards product placements in three different media (films, TV shows, and songs). ...

Media

...Carel Bou Maroun Research Paper on Media ENG 203 – Layla Al Kadi Harmouch Introduction: Everywhere you go, you hear people talking about Media. Media is the plural of Medium. But what is a medium? A medium is a mean of mass communication. How can you communicate with a big number of people without what we call a medium, such as newspapers, television, or the Internet for example? Simply, you can’t. Media are elements that help to communicate messages. Any element. In a classroom for example, media are the walls, the board, and even the people inside it. The term mass communications alludes to any type of correspondence that at the same reaches a huge number of people, including yet not constrained to radio, TV, daily papers, magazines, bulletins, movies, record. (Wimmer and Dominick, 1983.) As we all know it, some media are more active and used than others today. For instance, we can think about televisions or mobile phones. But we all know that television is not the first technology used to spread messages. “Media are the result of technology.” (Avery and McCain, 1982.) Day by day, new technologies are emerging and the “old” ones are being forgotten. This is what our modern-day world looks like. It’s constantly changing, moving, evolving… The innovation and models for creating and conveying media substance are always advancing. (Croteau, David, Hoynes, and Milam, 2003.) Media are also socialization agents. You learn...

Rock And Roll Vs. Hip-Hop Influence

...Rock and Roll Vs. Hip-Hop Influence Everyone knows that rock and roll and hip-hop are two completely different sounding genres, but why is that? Well, rock and roll uses heavy lead guitar to lead the band with while hip-hop uses vocals as their main point of interest. They sound drastically different, but they share many of the same roots. They share jazz, rhythm and blues, folk/gospel, and plain old blues. Where the music is different is when rock uses a little more blues influence while hip-hop uses soul influence. This leaves the question, “which is more influential?’’ and to get to that point, this paper will explain how both genres are influential in their own ways, and then he or she can compare the two so one can decide for his or herself. First, one should learn what rock and roll is, where it started, who influenced it, the controversies of it, and then all of that again but for hip-hop. So what exactly is “rock and roll”? Rock and roll (also known just as...

Capstone Project Ois 2340

...GPA vs. Music OIS 2340 Section 1 Aubrey Bullough Alyssa Boyd Helena Paulos Moraya Dodson Sam Webster Executive Summary We are a radio station and we were interested in finding a new target group for our upcoming sister station and who better than to target the large student population? Our goal was to find out if listening to classical music while studying is beneficial to students’ GPA’s.  We assumed that students who listened to classical music while studying have higher GPAs (3.1 or above) in comparison to students who listen to other genres while studying. A sample of 61 college students was taken and of those 16 reported that they listen to classical music while studying and obtain a GPA of 3.1 or above. We used proportional hypothesis testing to keep our data simple and precise. Our hypothesis was that 50% of students with GPAs 3.1 or above listened to classical music while studying. After extensive research and advanced calculations we have decided to reject this hypothesis.            To gather our data we created a digital survey on Survey Monkey and had each member of our group post the survey link as their Facebook status. To our advantage, Facebook worked extremely quickly. Our questions in our survey consisted of: (a) “Do you listen to music while you study?” (b) “What genre do preferred to listen to while they study?” And (c) “What is your current GPA?” We received roughly 100 responses and of those 100, 61 students earned a GPA of 3.1 or above and listen to...

Is Hip Hop Dead?

...…………………………………………………………………………………17 BIBLIOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION The phrase “Hip-Hop Is Dead” can be found everywhere around hip hop community discussions during the last years. Rapper “Nas” titled his eighth album in 2006 with this statement, and has caused a controversy among rap artists and listeners all over the world. But comparing today`s hip hop music with the roots of hip hop can we really claim that hip-hop is really dead? If so, what are the facts that lead in the death of hip hop? What does its demise mean for the average fan? How to bring it back? Does it mean the genre will go down in irrelevance like what happened in disco music? All these questions will be investigated during this paper, and to understand this complicate statement itself, we should figure out what the statement really means. Maybe it is the fact that most of the genre’s songs and music videos look exactly the same. Maybe it’s the mainstream hip-hop game’s emphasis in ridiculously shinning jewelry, the sexism and the focus on money and women. Better yet, according to Mickey Hess, “hip-hop’s untimely demise could be a result of the cancerous lack of creativity that plagued the general music industry in the last few years”. (Mickey Hess, 2007) So many people have said that this music once so radical and new is dead, Nas included. Nas in an XXL magazine interview when asked what he meant when proclaiming hip hop is dead he said:”Yeah Hip-Hop is Dead ‘cause America is dead...

Iggy Azealia Banks Analysis

...In her interview, Azealia Banks criticized Iggy Azalea, and ultimately the music industry for appropriating black culture. She mentions how the Grammys are supposed to be symbols of artistic excellence and that Iggy Azalea isn't excellent. She compares Macklemore's record to Drake's record stating that it was not nearly as artistically talented. And despite the radio show host's mentioning that Macklemore himself admitted that his record was not as good as Wiz Khalifa's, Azealia Banks still continued her tirade on the music industry and her perception of the industry as being racist. Although Azealia Banks is known for her controversial and offensive statements of other music artists, I do believe that there is historical context for what she is speaking to. In the post-Civil Rights era, White Americans left the cities to live in the...
