After having conversations with teachers in regards to the needs of the school literacy program, many teachers expressed their concerns about their literacy programs, and their current issues they are experiencing.
Most teachers agree that reading fluency, reading comprehension, and citing informational text are primary concerns for our population. The lack of reading fluency affects understanding for students, the reason being that students are self-correcting, and concentrating in pronouncing the words; this takes away the focus and attention needed to comprehend the text. Intensive reading intervention groups can yield promising results based on a study in reading fluency programs and small groups. Using data to drive the determination …show more content…
Staff and students are to dropped everything and read. Teachers at Dr. Hani Awadallah feel conflicted about this time. Supporters say that it takes away from instructional time, for Math, science, and Social Studies teachers. Language Arts teachers are elated about the fact that students are allowed to have their favorite book out and read. They see that excitement in some of the students when it is time to read, and are disappointed when the DEAR time is over. A teacher shares, " My students are enthralled, by the idea of reading their favorite book, and disappointed when it seems they are reaching the climax of the story and they have to stop. You could hear the groans." In every classroom, we can find the reluctant readers (Clark, 2014), who claimed they hate reading. Involving, the librarian, reading specialist, or literacy coach will assist in bringing in different literature to school. Furthermore, dear time provides an opportunity to interact after DEAR time. I have heard students shared their with their classmates the names of the book they are reading. Implementing DEAR time in the school can also improve fluency and comprehension. A plan to restructure the school library can have positive results, for the school and the community. A good book can motivate even the most reluctant reader. Stakeholders, and the English department chair, along with reading specialist or a reading coach can research ways to obtain a grant to bring more books into the library. Dr. Hani Awadallah is a new school, and the past academic year the library was half emptied, due to the lack of donation and funding for library books. Dr. Hani is located in a disadvantaged urban area, where more than half of the student receives free lunches. In most neighborhoods, where a library is not close to home, the school becomes the lifeline to books that students need. By allowing students to come with their parents to school to check out a book, on assigned days can create a literacy bond with their children; and in return, it will have a positive effect in the classroom ("Close-up: No Child Left Behind--Improving Literacy Through School Libraries,"

Student B is a 9 year old African American male who presently reads at the second grade level. Student C is a 9 year Hispanic female who reads at the second grade level. Student D is a biracial (Hispanic and African American) who reads at the second grade level. All of these students receive free lunch and have satisfactory attendance.
