Reading Summary of Costa et al. (2014)

1. Aim, Hypothesis and Prediction 1) What is the aim of the study?
According to psychologists, moral judgment seems to be driven by emotional and/or rational forces. The study aims to find out whether using a foreign language will affect these processes.

2) What is the hypothesis?
Moral judgment in foreign languages will be less impacted by the emotional force.

3) What is the prediction?
Moral judgment in foreign languages should be more rational and utilitarian than judgment in native languages.

2. Method
Experiment 1 1) Who are the participants?
317 native/foreign language speakers: 112 English/Spanish in the US, 80 Korean/English in Korea, 107 English/French in France, 18 Spanish or English/Hebrew in Israel 2) What was the procedure of the experiment?
Participants were interviewed in native or foreign language ambiance. They read the scenario and picture of the footbridge version of trolley moral dilemma: pushing a man off the bridge to stop a coming train so as to save five people or not. They were then asked to indicate their decision. After that, they answered questions about their background, and did a foreign language comprehension check if they were assigned to a foreign language group. 3) What are the dependent and independent variables?
DV: response to the dilemma (pushing or not pushing the man off the bridge)
IV: language used in the interview

Experiment 2 1) Who are the participants? 725 native/foreign language speakers: 397 Spanish / English, 328 English/Spanish 2) What was the procedure of the experiment?

Bilingual Analysis

...1980s, it was widely believed that bilingualism was associated with lower cognitive function (Hakuta et al., 1987). Some researchers believed that bilingual children suffer from linguistic, intellectual and academic retardation in relation to their monolingual peers (Tucker & d’Anglejan,1971). Researchers have also shown the negative effects of bilingualism on cognitive abilities. Our brain is like the banking system in order to draw new information it had to eradicate old information such as first language to store second language (Freire 2000) so bilingualism is verbal disadvantage and bilingual perform poor in verbal-fluency tasks (Gollan & Brown, 2006, (Rosselli et al., 2000), bilinguals have disadvantages in speaking (Gollan et al) due...

Leadership - Change Project

...Change Project NUR 492 November 10, 2014 Dr. Christine Markut Change Project Today’s healthcare providers are struggling more than ever to provide high quality care while controlling the costs of healthcare. The demands of an aging population and shortage of medical personnel have brought challenges to the medical office and physicians somehow need to improve their access. Instead of limiting the time patients are able to spend with their physician discussing their medical concerns, why not increase the time and make it more effective for both the patient and the physician. Incorporating GMA’s may allow our physicians to see more patients, provide more care, and increase practice revenue. The patient benefits with increased access to the provider as well as receiving significant education with their peers that suffer from the same medical conditions (Rhee, 2013). This is a win – win situation for the organization and patients. Patients are typically allotted 15 to 30 minutes to discuss their concerns with the physician but with group medical appointments (GMA), patients are actually able to spend up to 90 minutes with their provider. GMA’s offer an alternative structure in the way effective and efficient care is delivered to chronically ill patients (Schmucker, 2006) and it allows greater interaction time with the provider. A GMA will typically involve approximately 8-12 patients while all of the components of individual appointments can be delivered to include: one-on-one...

A Genre Analysis of Senior High School Staff Meeting Minutes

...A GENRE ANALYSIS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STAFF MEETING MINUTES ABSTRACT Interest in genre analysis has increased over the years with studies done by several scholars such as Swales, Bhatia, Berkonkotter, Hyon, Bazerman, Miller, to mention just a few, on various genre ranging from the research article in general to letters. Studies on genre analysis into meeting minutes are however, very limited and so the aim of this study is to investigate the communicative purpose, schematic structure and lexico grammatical features which characterize this genre. Swales' (1990) rhetorical approach to genre analysis was used to investigate eighteen meeting minutes which revealed the occurrence of seven moves with each having its own communicative purpose and linguistic features which characterize the genre as a formal one. The study has implications for genre studies in the area of pedagogy and further research. Key words: genre, minutes, discourse, moves, steps, Ghana. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Minutes is a highly formal written genre situated in the domain of business discourse and is an official record and considered a legal document by auditors, IRS and the law courts. Oxford defines it as a written record of what is said and decided at a meeting. It is used by institutions, corporate bodies and varied organisations. Its main communicative purpose is to record and relay information to the members of that discourse community. It also gives members the platform to express their views and opinions...
