Many heated debates whether marijuana should or should not pass a law legalizing marijuana for recreational use by the government stemmed from 1937, when Congress passed the Marihuana Tax Stamp act that heavily taxes cannabis, regulates, and introduced harsh penalties to those who did not adhere to it. Marijuana, also known as, cannabis is a greenish and brown mix of dried flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves. A substance that is smoked, consumed, or brewed in teas and some of the effects, are hallucinogenic, euphoria, muscle relaxer, and increase of appetite. There are thousands of articles that can be found on the Internet that support, and condemn the legalization of marijuana. James C. Backstrom, wrote an article titled, “Marijuana, America’s Most Dangerous Drug.” Backstrom is against the legalization of marijuana. However, marijuana should be legalized for recreational use.
Dangerous Drug
Backstrom claims that one of the most dangerous drugs is marijuana because it is the most illicitly used drug in America (Backstrom, 2010). Claiming that a substance is dangerous just because it is the most commonly used drug is a fallacious argument. According to the CDC, 80,000 deaths are related to alcohol, 443,000 to nicotine, and 14,800 to painkillers a year (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). There have been no official reports of marijuana-induced deaths. Looking at these numbers, marijuana is clearly not the most “dangerous” drug or substance available.
Gateway Drug
One of the most popular claims made against marijuana is that marijuana is a gateway drug leading to the use of more dangerous drugs such as cocaine and heroine. As mentioned before, one of the most illicitly used drugs in the United States is marijuana. According to the

Debate

...Debate The technique of persuasive argument is a skill that you must acquire in order to participate in a successful debate. The art of being eloquent, choosing your words wisely, and being able to think on your feet, encompasses many of the components that any debater should be able to handle. In our first debate last week, we got off to a bit of an awkward, slow start. A few of us were confused on the format, when to speak, and what to say next. After several people went up and read their paper, it was time for rebuttals. Certain people had no problem getting up in front of the class, and vehemently stating their position on the topic at hand. Once we were able to rebuttal with more ease, the debate went on a little more smoothly. In the middle of the debate, people didn’t want to end the argument as early as we did. We began to think more critically, coming up with better counterarguments and ideas. Considering this was our first debate, I would have to give it a six out of ten. Both teams were strong in some areas, and weak in others. Over time we will become stronger debaters and be able to develop and hone our skills. As we use the middle school format more often, we will become use to it and be prepared with a closing speech from both sides and a stronger opening argument. As captain for the first time and for the rest fo the class, we will be able to strategically plan who will speak next in the middle of the debate. We can send up our stronger members for some tougher...

...Article Rebuttal Paper One of the hottest controversies of the recent days is the Duck Dynasty and the permanent hiatus of Phil Robertson over his comment regarding homosexuality. I have read so many articles regarding this topic but have paid little to no attention regarding the matter. Hollywood and media tend to hype certain situation for free publicity and attention. One article that I ran into one day was one from http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Hollywood/2013/12/20/Mark-Steyn-Slams-the-Bureau-of-Gay-Compliance-for-the-Duck-Dynasty-Backlash. In the article Conservative Speaker Mark Steyn goes as far as to compare this situation to Post World War II communism. “It’s like something out of Milan Kundera’s Eastern European novel about post-war communist Europe, The Joke, where you make one little comment and your life is over. And we’re getting to that stage,” Said Steyn in a radio interview Hugh Hewitt. In other words he is stating that the current society must be complacent with the Gay Lobbyist or simple they will destroy you. He provides examples like that of former Ms. California Carrie Prejean. She was asked a question regarding gay marriage at the 2009 Miss USA Pageant, and her answer not only lost her the completion, but pretty much destroyed her reputation. Did the gay lobbyist in Washington have anything to do with it? Probably, but to say that we either comply too them or be destroyed and compare that to Post World War II Communism is a bit extreme, furthermore he...

...Anti-Gay Controversy Article Rebuttal Paper: James Lee University of Phoenix BCOM/275 Anti-Gay Controversy Article Rebuttal It is hard to argue that issues regarding gay rights have been under a great deal of scrutiny in recent years. Though much news has been geared towards same-sex marriage in relation to the recent presidential elections, gay rights have also been sparking upheaval in relation to the workplace. Specifically, in a Huffington Post article “Chick-fil-A Anti-Gay Controversy: Gay Employees Speak Out,” Lila Shapiro writes on the effects of Dan Cathy’s, founder and owner of Chic-Fil-A, coming out against gay marriage. Though clear, fair, and evidence based arguments can be given for both opponents and proponents on gay marriage, Shapiro only whimsically urges readers to wake up to Cathy’s mistakes with an argument from pity while also begging the question; claiming that his choices were a biased hatred towards the gay community. The article fails to show both sides of the argument and only makes an attempt to pull sympathy from readers by one sided views of those opposing Cathy’s business and religious choices to accept the writer’s views. For example, from one of the many stories she lists to support her claims, she writes: One gay employee who works at Chick-fil-A headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., and asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing his job, says he is getting it from both sides. On the one hand, there is the customer who came in and said he...

...Article Rebuttal Paper Carrington Ethridge 4/14/2014 Dr. Linda Vallejo Should Marijuana Be a Medical Option? In 1972, the US Congress placed marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act because they considered it to have "no accepted medical use." Since then, 21 US states Nations Capitol have legalized the medical use of marijuana. Supporters of medical marijuana argue that it can be a safe and effective alternative treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions. There are multiple studies from credible sources from prominent medical organizations, major government reports, and the use of marijuana as medicine throughout world history that support this. Non-Supporters of medical marijuana like the FDA argue that it is too dangerous to use as an alternative treatment for various reasons. One example would be that legal drugs make marijuana use redundant. They also say marijuana is addictive, a gate way to use other illegal drugs, interferes with fertility, and other physical and mental illnesses. They say that medical marijuana is used as front for the legalization of a banned substance. I believe medical marijuana should be legalized in all 50 states for alternative treatment. I feel if there is more supportive evidence supporting my beliefs on this topic then there is unsupportive evidence. Plus with man-made drugs they usually have a lot...

...Rebuttal Of Article Paper Dwight Dundas BCOM/275 4/28/2014 Doris Savron “Legalizing illegal immigrants is a bad idea.”  So reads the headline of an article written for the Chicago Tribune by Dave Seminara (February 08, 2013).  First I must state that I disagree with the author’s opinion in this article.  The legalization of immigrants isn't a bad idea. Aside from my personal opinion,  there are many studies that have shown this to be a good move for our country.  The author, Mr. Seminara, made several points throughout the article to justify his opinion.  Some of his title points included, “It’s not just going to be 11 million”, “Shadowy people aren't going to come out of the shadows”, Jobs Americans won't do, and “We already have guest worker programs that don't work”. According to Mr. Seminara, “A substantial percentage of illegal immigrants are here alone, and once they get green cards, they will be able to petition for their wives and children to join them in the U.S. And if they become U.S. citizens, they will also be able to petition for their siblings and parents” he also goes on to say that “11 million migrants could result in possibly 30 million new arrivals”.  This conclusion from Mr. Seminara sounds like more an sensationalized theory, than actual fact.  He offers no supportive data to prove how 11 million illegal immigrants will become 30 million, nor does he state how long the number would take to grow from 11 to 30 million. However, if his numbers...

...What thoughts do you think when you think about the idea of "welfare"? Most of us think of a minority living in a filthy house with five kids running around while an alcoholic dad sleeps it off face down on the couch, but Kimberly Amadeo Journalist from US economy provides in her article entitled “What is The American Dream” a host of ideas of what is projected to be what citizens of these great states call the American Dream, the way of life, living the life. In a country where opportunity is bountiful and plentiful many have dedicated their lives to building a life of fortune and financial freedom. On the other hand in many cases this is a reality and lifetime dream that is never reached or acquired for most. What we know as The Founding Fathers of these united states of America, is that the revolutionary idea that each person's aspirations to pursue happiness was not just self-indulgence, but a building block of what drives and sets the tone for ambition and creativity. By not only declaring, but also legally protecting the vested ideas and values, that the Founding Fathers set up as a very attractive society for those who aspire to a better life for themselves, and their families. Though success is a common goal for all, no matter your race, ethnic background, and or social status, Poverty and financial hardship is still an ever-present factor in today’s time. The US Department of Health and Human Services suggests that there is over 12,800,000 Americans on welfare...

...Oral Article Rebuttal - Capital Punishment BCOM/275 18 October 2012 Debra Brown Capital Punishment Article Rebuttal This paper is to examine an article based on an argument that a 23 –year- old Texas mom of five children received 99 years for gluing her two –year- old hands to the wall and beating her. The child suffered bleeding in her brain, which put her in a coma for a couple of days; a broken rib, multiple bruises, and bite marks, and skin torn from her hands on the wall. * Elizabeth Escalona savagely beat her two- year- old child to the edge of death because of potty training issues. * For this monstrous crime Elizabeth received 99 years in prison with eligibility of parole in 30 years. * Lawyer asked for probation or a prison sentence of fewer than 10 years. My argument is the crime Elizabeth Escalona committed was so heinous she should be punished by death. Remember, this happen in the Texas judicial system that is known to have the highest number of executions per year in the United States. Because Texas is the capital of capital punishment Elizabeth Escalona should receive the death penalty. Her lawyer asked the judge for probation or a prison sentence of less than 10 years stating that she came from a broken home, abuse and childhood of drug use and gangs. This is no excuse for the crime committed. The state of Texas has established government assistance...

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...
