...Sec N1/IAS218 Bothell Landing and the Sammamish River / Slough What causes a natural place to evolve over time to the way it looks now? Some of it is obvious, but I would propose that the development of business and commerce in the area have a bearing on how things evolve. In exploring this idea, I am drawn to the town where I live and what is now called Bothell Landing. The first time I saw Bothell Landing, was at the 4th of July celebration. They call it Founder’s Day. I remember walking down to a large cement amphitheater situated next to the Sammamish River. The slough is reminiscent of a very slow moving river with hardly any current. A foot bridge crosses the Slough and on the other side is a bike trail. I later found out that this is part of the Burke Gillman Trail. I had heard about it, but did not realize it parallels the slough through the Sammamish Valley. Standing on top of the bridge I began to notice how perfectly the banks were formed and how the distance between them was so consistent. I began to realize that this was not a natural waterway. Bothell Landing is an historical site with a number of houses and buildings preserved as they were a hundred years ago. One of those building houses the Bothell Historical Museum. It was actually one of early settlers, William A. Hannan’s house. It is very interesting to see what a state of the art house looked like from that period. The house is full of photos of what Bothell looked like...

...* * Beginnings of Home Rule * Gladstone's Irish policy during his First Ministry = little acknowledged success He was the first British politician to show any interest/understanding of the Irish problems Tackled the problems of lack of equal/fair treatment in religion and land Reforms were directed at suppressing Fenian demands for the repeal of the Union Gladstone was not interested in Home Rule at this point. * Dissatisfaction grew with the failure of Gladstone's land reforms still poor and oppressed by their Protestant Masters Easy prey for violent extremists who tried to whip up anti-English feeling. * Disgruntled Irish Protestants lent their support to the Home Government Association (HGA) Launched in Dublin by Isaac Butt = Start of the Home Rule for Ireland Movement. * 1873 = HGA became the Home Rule League. * The Strong Home Rule representation in Parliament was a great achievement for Butt However, the Home Rulers lacked discipline and cohesiveness to ring pressure to Westminster They lacked a strong leader Butt did not possess the dynamism to keep Home Rule at the top of the political agenda Believed that the Home Rule case would succeed if they were patient After Butt's death, Parnell took over the leadership of the Irish Party in the House of Commons more charismatic and more in favour of action. ...Case: Unequal-Equal Supervisors Questions 1. How have the inaccurate performance ratings created more problems? The inaccurate performance rating created an ethical dilemma for Hubert Johnson. Rating both employees the same even though one is more capable can lead him to making the wrong decision when retaining one supervisor for the job. This in turn can cause adverse consequences for the company. For instance, it’s quite clear that Neil will be the appropriate choice to help lead the company reach its goals. But since the company requires the person with most seniority receives priority, Hubert should retain Harriet, not Neil. The company at this point needs efficient leader like Neil to help gain sales back, but due to Hubert’s inaccurate decision regarding performance rating he might have to keep Harriet which might affect the productivity levels of the organization. 2. What HR and legal issues could be raised in this case? The documentation raises questions about the fairness of the evaluation system. As noted in the text, if any part of the appraisal process fails, better-performing employees may not receive larger pay increases, and the result in perceived inequity in compensation. Accurate evaluations can provide justification for actions such as, termination or demotion should they be necessary. Either employee can file a lawsuit against the company. 3. What course of action would you recommend that Hubert take? Explain your rationale for taking this...
