Policies in Reducing Emissions

Abstract
A policy maker can have concerns with the effects of the amounts of gases and particulates that are being released into the environment. Their concern turns into wanting a resolution to correct the issue. There are many government policies and systems created for resolving problems like a local power plant emitting gases and particulates into the air. This paper will discuss a policy that can be effective in correcting the problem and benefits from it.

Title of Paper
When it comes to the local power plant and the pollution emitted into the air, there are many policies that can be set forth to reduce the amount of emissions.
One policy that can be very effective in reducing the pollution at a local power plant is the government setting a cap on how much pollution can be emitted into the air. International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) states “the cap and trade system is the best means to establish a quantifiable, legally enforceable limit on emissions…” (IETA, 2014). This result is the cheapest and the most beneficial to the economy.
What is the Solution?
If the government could set a cap on how much pollution that can be emitted into the air this would be great for the environment. It would reduce the amount of emissions and global emissions reductions will move faster. The cap and trade system allows the private sector the flexibility to reduce emissions and work on other means like creating innovative technology and growth in the economy.
Generally, when private costs are incurred by the decision maker and they are less than the social costs of an activity; a negative externality arises. When this happens, the amount emitted is set to where private marginal cost equals private marginal benefit. The main objective is to be able to provide the local firm with a policy that will help them with the social optimal amount of emissions. Enforcing the regulatory standard set forth by the government would be the most sufficient.
Benefits to Reducing
The benefit besides emissions reduction is incentives to create and use technology and introducing new technology. Also, the economy will be able to flourish and grow. The costs of actually using the cap and trade system are very inexpensive and it would have a great environmental impact. In order for the policy to have a great environmental impact the cap must be met. If the company does not meet the cap, then there must be consequences set in place.
If I had to decide the best level of emission reduction I would evaluate each option carefully. The final choice would be based on what is best for the environment and society. Another part of the decision would be based on the best financial option. There are many government policies that are set in place. However; the government can take a look to implement new policies into the system.
