...Danilo Pacris Espiritu Week 4- Assignment 1- Journal Entry Coming to an end towards week 4, I cannot believe that we are halfway through the term. I believe this week was all about looking back to the first week and reflecting on how we all came a long way and grown together as a class. Even as an online class where we don’t see each other face to face, I have learned so much from my other classmates through discussion boards when reading their posts as well as the feedback they provide me. With two weeks left for this term, I am still open to learning more from my classmates as well as the benefits of technology. In answering the discussion assignment this week about specific technology equipment that we could not live without, I was able to use the checklist we filled out from the first week. As mentioned from my last journal entry, we are always building on the prior week’s material in order to help prepare us for the current week. Therefore, I was able to use the checklist as a guide to help with this week’s discussion assignment. In reflecting on how much technology has evolved over the years growing up, I learned that living without it would be difficult. However, learning about techno-stress was an interesting topic where we often rely on technology on a daily basis which causes our stress level to rise. As a result, we get too involved or “plugged-in” with technology that it can be over stimulating for us which can lead to dangerous situations. As much...

...7/29/12 UNIV103, Unit 2 IP Ghosts of Educations past Coming back to school after so long was daunting, but I could not have been happier for making the choice I have. In my first course I have been asked to complete an exercise called the MFL Path Builder. As I worked on this request I found I remembered much more than I thought I would, and forgotten just as much. There are three basic topics that include Writing, Reading, and Math. In high school I was very good at math, but I found I am just a little lacking in memory of all the rules math requires. Whereas I never excelled at English in high school; but was pleasantly surprised when I mastered 3 out of 4 modules in Reading. Oddly enough though in Writing, I completely tanked. After finding out just how much I have remembered and forgotten after so long, I find I am very anxious to get started on all the topic’s contained in each module. I started my IP by setting aside time to myself each night to focus on completing the MFL Path Builders. After completing the path builders for each topic I believe it did just what it should have done. It showed me just what I need to re-learn and catch up on. I feel that this tool was made to help new students that have been out of school for a long time; succeed in their education, and give us the same chances as those students who have just gotten out of other educational programs. I was pleasantly surprised buy the tool this program has given me and my chances to...

...Gibbs Reflective Assignment On Non-Verbal Communication With A Patient With Demenita Introduction This assignment is a reflective account of my first experience when assisting a patient to eat lunch. For the purpose of this assignment I will refer to this patient as Mrs C to maintain confidentiality and comply with the NMC code (2008). It will discuss the importance of non-verbal communication when providing effective nursing care to the elderly. Description Thoughts and Feelings Evaluation I felt this first experience was very rewarding and a big learning curve for me in caring for others. I was delighted that I had been able to support Mrs C to eat nearly all of her meal which she clearly enjoyed. The ‘protected mealtime’ policy ensured that I had time to dedicate to assist her and as she did not have the ability to feed herself, without my help she would have eaten very little or nothing at all. In order to communicate with Mrs C, I modified the usual rules of communication. I did not speak to Mrs C in an inappropriate way or use elder talk which may have damaged her self esteem and confidence (Argle 1994). I talked to her as I would address any adult but put more emphasis on non-verbal communication which according to Caris Verhallen (1999) is the main way in which humans communicate, in order for her to receive my message, extract the meaning and give me feedback. By holding Mrs C’ gaze I was maintaining communication and encouraging engagement and interaction...

...for children ages 2 through six years old. Every mother wanted to have their child in a Montessori-based education because it had a purpose to educate the child. The classrooms have very few rules, the child can walk around the class as they please, and the child was not given deadlines for material that was due (Holfester). Allowing very few rules and no deadlines it allows for the child to become independent, responsible, and imaginative at a young age. The Montessori method is worth investing in because a study shown in Taiwan showed that the students who went through the Montessori education before entering elementary school. They had better scores on language arts and in math, compared to the students who did not go through the Montessori program (Peng and Md-Yunus). For America to get better in math globally, maybe more students should be apart of the Montessori method at a young age? The Montessori method lets the children express themselves and not put pressure on them to be the best. Another type of early childhood education is Waldorf. Waldorf is a way of learning in which the teacher teaches the children in three stages for the development for the child. It came from a man named “Rudolf Steiner [who] specifically founded the school for children of Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory workers” (Nordlund 3). Rudolf was a German philosopher in the early twentieth century and believed children develop in three different stages with practices. Rudolf describes that the first...

...Light rain started to sprinkle as George scampered through his front door. “I’m so tired!” George said, who had just gotten home from a two hour soccer practice. Sore all over, he just wanted to go to bed. However, as George entered his bedroom, he tripped over his heavy math textbook. “Ugh!!!” he exclaimed as he stumbled over other school supplies. George turned the light on to discover his room a mess (more than usual), his backpack lying open on the floor, and all his school materials scattered across the room. Already exhausted, George grudgingly picked up his school supplies. “At least mom didn’t see this,” George thought to himself. But then he had a moment of realization, “Wait, didn’t I leave my backpack closed before I left for soccer practice?” After pondering this for a few minutes, he then came to another...

...Personal Philosophy of Education I would not be considered your typical college student in search of an education degree. I am a 31 year old male, married, with two children, and working on my second career. My previous life consisted of working in the coal mines till I was injured. My injury, however, is considered a blessing in disguise. My injury has leaded me to the world of education. I have seen first hand the difference an educator can make in the life of a child; the child was my own son. My eldest son, diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, was unable to communicate. He had the opportunity to be enrolled in the early intervention program in Raleigh County. The first individual with the challenge of assisting my child was not able to fulfill her roles and think “outside of the box” to reach him. My wife and I promptly searched for the appropriate educator for him. My family was blessed when we found “Ms. Mitzi”. In the matter of weeks our son was able to tell his mommy he loved her. This impacted my life significantly and I wish to be able to pass on what was given to my child and my family. I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing...

...Reflections on Education Policy SOC 320: Public Policy: Social Services Instructor : Exaterina Gorislavsky Adrienne Henry August 23,2015 My journal today will discuss the reflection on education policy. What are the current major issues reflecting to education? Some of the major issues that are taking today in our nation with education in public schools is poverty. Poverty has been a crisis for the longest and there are so many children who come from low income families. Many families only bring in 23,000 a year or less a year with this going on in the homes it has caused the drop out rate to increase. A big impact to the issues is what goes on in the home as well. Teachers have to deal with students being disrespectful towards adult authority and their peers as well. When you have negativity going on it brings bullying and violence and many students face this on a daily basis. There are Too many students in one class up to thirty students. This is a issue because how can they learn you have too much distraction and this causes the teachers a lack of interest to teach. The Government should take fault for this because they should provide money to pay more teachers to be employed and build more schools...

...He got bogged down on some types of math questions and ran out of time. Ever since the results came back, he has been prone to self-doubt. You have noticed that his study habits in math and science have gone down a bit. I tell him the PSAT doesn’t determine how smart he is, and he can practice for the real test. I got a call from Mason on his cell phone. While backing out of a parking space Mason bumped into a passing car. There was only minor damage to both cars. So he can’t drive for two weeks and has to pay the deductible. I am just happy that this was a minor accident. I taught Mason time management to keep him from being so...

...Class of 2016, Congratulations, we've made it! Today is our first, “big first”, our step in the real world, adulthood, and that time when all the dreaded college loan debt comes back to haunt us. It seems like just yesterday, we were starting the best adventure of our lives. Now, as we sit here pondering how to pay that debt and thinking about what the future has in store, I can’t help but be proud that we have made it. Having survived the core, our exams, essays, endless nights up studying, the miserable hangovers, and the shots fired on State St., I think we all should be proud to have made it here in one piece. In all seriousness, today is a milestone for each us as well as our families, and it is to our loved ones that we owe our deepest thanks. I think I can speak for most of us here ready to receive our diplomas, that we would not be here if it wasn’t for the endless support we had every step of the way, the shoulders we had to lean on when things got rough, and the days we thought we couldn’t make it, but we did with a quick pep talk... or a shot or two of tequila. After today, we leave the protection of the College, the community of our friends, roommates, and teachers, to find and forge new communities of our own. I want to spend our final moments together reflecting on the distinctive kind of education that has shaped the way in which we think about the opportunities and challenges we have faced. AIC prides itself on dedication, intellectual and personal...

...Educational Psychology Dr. Gary Smith October 8, 2014 Introduction An elementary school first grade classroom teacher has spent the last four months teaching his students concepts of basic addition and subtraction. Students continue to show progress in understanding of both addition and subtraction skills through direct instruction, guided practice, homework practice worksheets, and in-class assessments, both informal and formal. During in class station activities as an alternative to outdoor recess, Mr. Duncan pulls out several games/activities and a timer; students will rotate through game stations every 10 minutes to allow students to experience various stations. Two of the activity stations involve math games such as Monopoly Junior and Candy Land. As students delve into their activity stations, Mr. Duncan observers his students unknowingly performing algorithms, maybe without a true understanding of why they are doing so yet, but still – applying learned skills correctly to real-world activities. Later that same school year, students in Mrs. Robinson’s second grade class are reviewing the value of money. Zayne’s father gives him $1 for each chore completed during the week. Within a few weeks, Zayne earns and saves $30 dollars and decides to spend his money on a Snakeez, a portable cup with a lid that doubles as a snack container, which he’s seen on a TV ad. Knowing this, Zayne’s dad has Zayne sit down and write on a sheet of paper...

...In this assignment I will be describing theories of learning, I will be writing briefly about 6 influences and refer to both positive and negative, I will also be writing about skills for learning, support for learning and learning opportunities. Theories of learning - Kolb's experiential learning theory works on two levels: a four stage cycle of learning and four separate learning styles. The four stage cycle are: - Concrete Experience (coming across a new experience of a situation, or interpretation of existing experience); - Reflective Observation (reviewing a new experience and reflecting on the experience); - Abstract Conceptualisation (concluding reflection which gives rise to a new idea, or a modification of an existing abstract concept); - Active Experimentation (planning and then trying out what you have learned to see what result you get). The four stages are: 1. Experience 2. Reflection 3. Conceptualise 4. Test. Honey and Mumford’s learning style theory has the purpose of persuading people to try their ‘test’ in order to find out their own personal way of learning which could be: * Activist like to be involved, like new ideas, lose interest quickly, like to dominate and have ‘jump first/think later’ mentality; * Reflectors like to observe from the edge of the group, consider things from a range of different perspectives, they let others contribute before they do, collect information before drawing a conclusion; * Theorists like to bring together different...

...Philosophy of Teaching When a student enters my classroom they will be entering a place where their learning is the main focus. From the way the topics are taught to my teaching style, everything will be done with the students’ best interests in mind. As a teacher, it is my job to instill a love of learning in my students. Everything that I do in the classroom supports this love and helps the students to fulfill their potentials. As a teacher I have developed a series of beliefs: * I believe parents can be a great asset in the classroom. I have found that including them is beneficial for the students and for me. One example of this is having the parents come in and help the students with editing and revising. One-on-one help is great for the students and the parents really like to be a part of what is going on in their child’s class. * I believe in making my lessons authentic. For example, when teaching a lesson about addition with money, use a menu from one of the local restaurants and have the students “order” food and add up what their bill would be. * I believe in using a variety of teaching techniques. There are many different ways of learning and every child learns things differently. One example of how I have done this in my classroom was how I taught the students the process of a bill becoming a law. The students were introduced to the process through reading and discussion. During the next lesson the students role-played the Michigan...
