When I read articles in newspapers, magazines and websites, sometimes I am frustrated due to the lack of factual information. I feel the writer has a responsibility to the readers that they have completed as much research prior to going to print. I know many readers who rely on their favorite journalist simply assume the information they are reading is accurate. Information that is unsubstantiated can lead to debates, lawsuits and someone losing their job. Some authors will update the in the next issue but often times it is too late and the damage is done.
The way I try and approach what I am writing is to first know if I already have knowledge about what I am researching. I ask myself if I know anything about the subject and where I can find more information about the matter. I also try to find anyone I know personally who may have extensive knowledge or experience on the subject. This can also lead to additional sources. I also gather information from my local library and use the internet. Once I have gathered all of my sources. I then go through each of what I had gathered and determine what will go into my paper.
We can face many challenges when it comes to research. Very little information may be available on the internet or libraries. Experts may be unreachable by phone or deceased. It is possible you may have to travel to get the information you need which can become expensive. All of these challenges can lead to lost time for the completion of the research if a deadline exists.
Locating legitimate sources is very important when doing research. An example of this would be to verify an individual’s credentials and experience. Cross referencing your sources will help ensure the information you find is as accurate as can be. Time management is important if you have a deadline to complete the research. The last tip is to ensure that you cite your resources.
