Week 8 Knowledge Assessment and Application and Self-Assessment Relapse prevention models, such as Marlatt and Gordon's, are theoretical constructs and valuable tools that can be a powerful addition to everyone's mental health toolbelt. I found Marlatt and Gordon's model incredibly insightful in my journey to reduce soda consumption. The relapse prevention model offers a comprehensive approach that emphasizes self-management, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and long-term maintenance of behavior change (Miller, 2020). My analysis will explore how I have applied this model to my soda-drinking habits, outlining the steps and interventions necessary for effective relapse prevention. Marlatt and Gordon's model can be a powerful tool in addressing this habit, focusing on both the anticipation and prevention of relapse and the recovery from lapses before they escalate into full-blown relapses. Relapse-Prevention Model The Marlatt and Gordon model is based on the principles of social learning theory, which views addiction as an overlearned, maladaptive habit pattern (Miller, 2020). The model is built on four assumptions: addiction is a learned behavior, behavioral determinants impact this behavior, individuals are not entirely responsible for developing the habit, and escape from the addiction cycle requires changing the habit through active participation and responsibility. To mitigate the Abstinence Violation Effect, I need to adopt a compassionate and constructive perspective, recognizing that lapses are part of the change process and not indicative of total failure. Reframing my thoughts to view the lapse as an opportunity for growth will help maintain long-term abstinence from soda. Long-Term Support System Social support plays a pivotal role in relapse prevention. Engaging friends, family, and a counselor in my journey to reduce soda consumption can provide encouragement and accountability. Sharing my goals and progress with others creates a network of support that can offer assistance during challenging times, emphasizing the importance of a community in this process. The final component of Marlatt and Gordon's model involves the long-term maintenance of behavior change. Regular self-assessment, ongoing education about the health impacts of soda, and celebrating milestones are essential to sustaining the change. ...Introduction: Developed by Prochaska and DiClemente in 1983, the Trans-Theoretical Model is one of many popular theories, which is used to describe the event of changing a behavior. It is said that the Trans-Theoretical Model (TTM) is a theory of behavioral changes which "intentional behavior change is a process occurring in a series of stages, rather than a single event and that motivation is required for the focus, effort and energy needed to move through the stages” (Miller, W.R., Rollnick, S., 2002). The indirect effect of supervisor support on transfer of training is only slight, however. Learning results are shown to be the strongest predictor of transfer of training. Owing to the small sample size structural equation modelling techniques could not be used, thus limiting the possibility to test the model as a single entity. The use of perceptional measures implies the risk of response tendencies from trainees and supervisors. Further research using different measures and different timing of measurement during the training and transfer process is recommended. Results of this study indicate that supervisor support that is intended to enhance transfer of training can best be directed at improvement of the transfer climate at the workplace.
