...Assess the impact of cotemporary ideas of the present state of religion in the world. Clearly, the diversity of religions in the world has been a fact throughout the entire history of all the world's major living religious traditions. Nevertheless, this diversity has been made the basis for contention rather than community in many cases, and the monotheistic religions have often been among the worst offenders on this score. The strong tendency to display hostility toward different religious positions is connected with a strong tendency toward xenophobia and ethnocentrism. The study of religion in the modern world calls for theories, approaches and methods that engage with the issues and processes that have affected the world within the last two hundred years, such as the impact of colonialism and subsequent postcolonial developments, globalization and the rise of global religious movements. For a start, it is worth asking if secular states and their underlying ideology, political secularism, are really under siege everywhere. Secularism was severely jolted with the establishment of the first modern theocracy in 1979 in Iran. By the late 1980s, Islamic political movements had emerged in Egypt, Sudan, Algeria, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Chad, Senegal, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and even in Bangladesh. Movements challenging secular states were hardly restricted to Muslim societies. Protestant movements decrying secularism emerged in Kenya, Guatemala, and the Philippines...

...What is the American dream you might ask. To tell you the truth the American dream is not just one idea, but many ideas that fit into one single belief. These beliefs will be different depending on the that you ask which is why I believe it is many ideas that go along with one single belief. To find out what the American dream is will be difficult. If you want to know what it is you must figure it out yourself because everyone will have a different opinion than you. The general idea of the American dream is basically having freedom. There are a few different types of freedom we can take advantage of. One type of freedom is the freedom of speech which is one of my favorite. This type of freedom gives us the right to be able to express ourselves without being afraid that we will be prosecuted or killed. Everyone in this country has a right to believing in there own beliefs. Freedom of speech helps get the citizens involved in what they believe is the best way to run this country. Although the president is the one that that helps make major decisions, we are the the ones who elected him which means that those decision were based off of our votes. The other type of freedom that I feel is important is the freedom of religion. This is a big part of the American dream because most people leave there country to be able to choose what religion they want to be. Freedom of religion should be the belief that we can decide for ourselves, but sadly some people don't have that...

...about being judged by the world around them. In Kenji Yoshino’s “Preface” and “The New Civil Rights” he talks about creating a new civil rights which would do just that except just for North America. He promotes not covering, putting on a façade, to start this process. One place where we could begin being ourselves is online, by collaborating everyone’s intrinsic ideas, according to Marshall Poe’s “The Hive”. But not everyone one has a computer. That’s when Thomas Friedman’s “The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention” comes out to publicize supply chains which are different countries collaborating to make something together, like Dell computers, all over the world, which could altogether stop wars between united countries. This could potentially create a Universal civil rights. If other countries can forget our differences to work on a project together then maybe we could also work together to agree on a Universal civil rights. There’s just a few elements that are stopping this from happening that include disagreements in religion, culture, and computer access could thwart this mission before it even gets started. Religions all around the world have varying definitions on what is okay and what is not okay. Most religious people think that gay people should not get married. In the Bible it talks about Sodom and Gomorrah which are two cities that were supposedly corrupted by evil, greed, and sexually crazed people. Then God came along and burned these cities straight to the ground....

...story of Andre Trocme and the peoples of Le Chambon is a truly an inspiring given the fact that they helped harbor many Jews from being persecuted. They are truly inspiring because from a religious perspective they have lived a part of the Christian faith that many people never will and as result their story will probably be read to future generations of those who are seeking to live a more fulfilled Christian life. From this amazing yet dangerous story, I can regrettably say that I have never heard of these people or the actions they took to help harbor the dozens of lives of Jews. I think this is so because of several reasons including the very idea of religion not wanting to be taught by the public school systems, the information that was provided in the textbooks that the teachers were required to teach did not deal with religion, and learning about people whom had a greater impact on the way history was made. I can remember that as I started to make my way through high school, I had a history teacher named Mrs. Martin and the material that she used was directly from the book. Very little to hardly any information would come from her own books or past years of study. The one thing about her that was interesting was that she was a very devout Christian. Breathing the news of the gospel was almost second nature and she would often talk to anyone whom needed spiritual assistance. As the years progressed, she slowly stopped giving advice because she was afraid that she would...

...Cursory Analysis Having finished up with the answer of the evils of religion as opposed to the evils of civilization, Gandhi criticizes the requirement of protection from “the Pindaris, and the Bhils”. He states that suffering their perils would be better than requiring the British protection to repel it, as that would “render us effeminate”. The chapter is concluded by putting forth the idea that home rule can only be achieved when “we” stop fearing our countrymen, whoever or whatever they may be. Now the idea changes from pax britanica being questioned to how “Railways, lawyers, and doctors have impoverished the country”. Consumption is treated as a disease that plagues the population, showing a false pretense of wellbeing as is apparent from the lines “Consumption does not produce apparent hurt – it even produces a seductive color about the patient’s face, so as to induce the belief that all is well”. Now the concept of civilization being the broader umbrella which covers consumption and other such maladies is introduced. The example used to substantiate this assertion comes in the form of the railways, a symbol of modernity which showcases the spread of civilization. Arguments including the spread of germs, the bubonic plague, and evil in general is used to drive the point home. It is further stated that the same cannot be used to spread the word of the “good”, as the virtuous are not selfish and, hence, travel at a snail’s pace, further stating that the obstacle of distance...

...Defending the Free Market: Critical Analysis Defending the Free Market written by Rev. Robert Sirico is a book about how being a leftist seems like a very moral and right thing to do for people but in turn is not very economically sound. He talks about how back in his younger days he was a socialist and leftist but in turn with many talks with people and intense fact searching he figured out how the free-market system is the only way to solve many of the world’s problems. What I thought was Sirico’s strong points about the book was that he applied religion to a lot of the things he had to say. Usually when someone is talking about economics they try to shy away from including religion into their speech or paper. Also, Sirico was very blunt about what he had to say. He went straight to the point backing his ideas with personal experience and facts. When it comes to Sirico’s weaknesses I could not find anything. He was very direct in what he said and I believe he did not leave anything out. When I first began to read this book I thought that it was going to be a dull strung-out economic lesson as if a robot had written the book. Within the first few pages I was quickly proved wrong when Sirico started to add personal background and experience. He did this throughout the book, which made it actually interesting to read. One of the points Sirico mentioned really caught my eye. In Ch. 4, Want to help the poor? Start a business, he talks about how foreign aid does not...

...There are different characteristics that make a team effective. First, there has to be clarification of common goals and purposes. The purpose needs to be clear and there needs to be contribution to the team’s goals as a group. The group should come up with each person’s role in achieving the common purpose of the group. Paying attention to when conflicts arise and discussing and producing constructive ideas to compromise and work out resolving the conflict. There should be interacting with one another and steady communication between group members. Being sensitive to other group member’s feelings and ideas will help the group communicate and work together better. When you put all these characteristics together, it helps build an effective team. Communication I would say is the biggest key to success in a group, though. When a group can talk, voice opinions, and feel open to communication, it makes working together, giving ideas, and coming up with a game plan a lot easier. Staying in contact and making sure everyone is where they need to be with their assigned parts is a good idea too just to make sure everyone is on track and team members do not need help. I have seen a person in a group not know what to do and will not say anything until the day before the assignment is due. This also would be where communication comes in. How do roles, needs, and diversity affect teamwork? Provide specific examples. When it comes to roles, each person has a role in the group. If a person...

Difficulty in understanding seeing the difference between facts and interpretations. People may write factual statements that can be proven but add their own personal sense or views that may not be factual. This concept people have the tendency in seeing when reading an article or during research. |Comfortable concepts | 1. Understanding the difference between literal and Ironic statements is believed to have misinterpretations by some people but those concepts we believe are rather easy to pick out. 2. Skim Reading: Is a comfortable concept because as students we have a lot of books to read and skimming the work helps us with school work more effectively. In week two they spoke about our examination of the creative process that has demonstrated us how to recognize problems and issues express them clearly, and gain essential insights into them. Chapter 9 is very important because, this chapter describes the advantage of producing a wide range of solutions rather than settling for less. (Difficult Concept) • Familiar ideas tend to come first; nothing can be done to avoid the pattern. Therefore your best approach is to expect them, even encourage them, to free your mind for more original ideas....

...BUkleja Date 2013-01-03 Civilization Today we look at the future and wonder? Have you ever wondered about the past? We will discuss were we came from in forms of region, religion, as well as artistic expression. If you grew up in North America with in the last thirty years there are things that you would automatically know, such as baseball, hotdogs, rock stars, J.F.K. and Martin Luther King. Why would you know these things? Well first Hot dogs no matter where you came from in the country you had a hotdog either at a family barbeque, quick meal on the go or a sporting event. The idea of such things like sporting events like Baseball and Football pro and college alike, in some areas these can be as inspirational as religion. It may seem like a cliché as the underdog stories like “Rudy”, League of their own or Major League. What do all these things have in common? They each talk of the man or men even women doing what might seem as impossible at the time but what might be need at that time. They each bring hope and inspiration to their characters. Sporting events aren’t the only source of modern day inspiration every now and then we come across great men and women that will inspire or motivate a generation some good and some bad. Let’s us look back at George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Hitler, Martin Luther King and Obama. Each has their place in history President Washington some say the greatest president of all time, Harriet Tubman the bravest women of all time...

...Dream is an idea which suggests that all people can succeed through hard work, and that all people have the potential to live happy, successful lives. Many people have expanded upon or refined the definition of the American Dream, and this concept has also been subject to a fair amount of criticism. Many people believe that the structure of American society belies the idealistic goal of the American Dream, pointing to examples of inequality rooted in class, race, and ethnic origin which suggest that the American Dream is not attainable for all. The idea of an American Dream is older than the United States, dating back to the 1600s, when people began to come up with all sorts of hopes and aspirations for the new and largely unexplored continent. Many of these dreams focused on owning land and establishing prosperous businesses which would theoretically generate happiness, and some people also incorporated ideals of religious freedom into their American Dreams. During the Great Depression, several people wrote about an American Dream, codifying the concept and entrenching it in American society. For people who believe in the American dream, anything is attainable through hard work. The concept plays on the idea that American is a classless society, although it is obviously not, as any honest examination of the United States will reveal. The idealistic vision of the American Dream also assumes that people are not discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, gender, and...

...person I am today. I also think about my purpose. Why am I here? What is the point of life? Personal Philosophy I consider my personal philosophy my guide to living. Philosophy is defined as a pursuit of wisdom or a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly speculative rather than observational means (“Philosophy,”n.d.). My first influences were my parents, of course. We were not the perfect family by any means but I’d like to think I had a good balance, a hard rock father and a nurturing mother. I came out in the middle - no really, I am the middle child. Religion was instilled in me at an early age to form a basic foundation to build upon. I did not think about life purpose until after I had my own children. Having the responsibility for another life put me on a entirely different wave length. The idea of having to mold another human life was an awesome responsibility, and I did not have a guide book. Knowingly or unknowingly, you draw from what you have learned along the way. Qualities Honesty, trust, and respect have always been important to me. Becoming a parent made me look outside myself and start to think about things like service, seeking knowledge and happiness. My list of personal qualities would include being, conscientious, honest, empathetic and moral. It is a foundation upon which to build. I think in terms of a life long self improvement project. It might not be perfect, but you can tear it...

...Should couples live together before marriage ? Nowadays there are a lot of couples that live together before marriage and some even live together without marriage. The percentage of them are increasing, especially in United States. This is not a good thing for the society and some religion do not allow this kind of thing too . So, couples should not live together before marriage. One main reason is that the couples who live together before marriage have a higher rate of Breaking-up than the marriage couples. We are not saying that marriage can keep the relationship 100 percent, but marriage will be able to help prevent marriage from torn apart or split up. When couples live together, they do whatever they want and please. Marriage couples before they do anything, they also think about their partner. And for some religion, couples can live together when they are marriage. The percentage of orphan are increase from the result of the couple who live together before marriage. The child whom abandon from their parents are facing the mental and emotional problem. We are not saying all the couple that live together before marriage are abandon their children when they break-up, but the percentage are high. Some couples are young, so they do not take the full responsible or do not think much when they abandon their child. Many may argue that living together before marriage help couples to understand each other more before marriage and also help prevent the increasing...

...Creative Thinking Name HUM/111 April 28, 2013 Yasmeen Thomas Creative Thinking Of all the political issues present in our country today, the issue of Gay Marriage is one that everyone has an opinion on. There are very few people who will ever say, “I have no opinion.” They may not want to express their opinion, but everyone will have an opinion on this topic. The Gay Marriage debate is explosive because it touches several hot buttons: religion, civil rights, homosexuality, homophobia, race and hatred. In order to properly address this issue we have to consider all sides of the issue. Not just the issue itself, but how each side feels about the issue. We have to ask if their opinions are valid or emotional. We have to ascertain whether their feelings are based on universal truths or religious fervor. By considering all sides we may come up with multiple solutions. We can also put ourselves in the opponent’s shoes and try to argue against ourselves so we can see what the other side sees. We can also take the position of an onlooker to judge the situation impartially. In a topic like this there is rarely one solution. More likely, it will be a series of imaginative compromises that will ultimately take place. As Alfred North Whitehead warned, “Fools act on imagination without knowledge; pedants act on knowledge without imagination.” Living creative means combining knowledge and imagination (Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, 2012). In order to bring groups together...
