One hot wildlife question being debated in coffee shops, sporting goods stores, and Internet chat sites across Missouri goes something like this: “Do we have mountain lions here or not?” The short answer is yes, sometimes. But we have far fewer than rumors would lead you to believe. What we do not have is any evidence of a viable, breeding population of mountain lions in Missouri. As a result, the Missouri Department of Conservation has changed the state classification of the species from endangered to extirpated. An extirpated species is one that is considered extinct as a viable breeding population from a portion of its historical range. The Conservation Commission has determined that, based on considerations of human safety and risk to livestock, it is undesirable to have a breeding population of mountain lions in Missouri. Therefore, the Department of Conservation will not encourage the species to reestablish itself in the state. Despite rumors, the Department has never stocked mountain lions and will not do so in the future. Although mountain lions, sometimes called cougars, pumas, panthers or catamounts, were common in Missouri and elsewhere in the Midwest prior to European settlement, they were eradicated during the 19th century. Pletscher Large carnivores are important for biodiversity and ecosystem function, yet are very difficult to conserve because of their large home ranges and conflicts with humans. I examined human-leopard conflicts in and near Ayubia National Park, Pakistan, to provide management recommendations for the conservation of leopards. Persecution of leopards by humans has been on the rise primarily due to depredation on livestock and risk to human lives. Since 1989, 16 humans have either been killed or injured in and around Ayubia National Park while leopards faced 44 human-caused mortalities during the same period. Do we really want to block our government from utilizing existing technology to gather easily obtained information, and instead wait for the next terror attack to happen before we do anything? Within the vast population of the United States, the majority believes that it is proper for the government to track millions of calls of Americans in order to investigate possible terrorism. In general, my research shows that approximately 56% of the American people believe that scanning is a justified action of the government given the circumstances. According to the Pew Research Center in 2013, approximately 55% of the older generations encourage governmental scanning to explore and seek out potential terrorist activities, while waiving their constitutional rights to privacy in the process. When it comes to the younger generations however, that number dips to approximately 45%, showing this demographic to be just slightly more reluctant to waive their privacy rights. Conversely though, only 12% of the entire population of the younger generations actually follow this subject closely which makes one wonder how informed their decisions are. How could I have lived here in Tampa for seventeen years and never visit this place? I walked in and saw the grounds; this place was huge, well kept and full of history. My first stop was a stroll through Marble rose garden, it was beautiful , over one thousand-two hundred roses are planted in the garden the beautiful marble sculptures was placed in the right order, not overpowering the garden but just enough to accent the landscape. The stroll quiet relaxing, the cool air flowing through the trees, the sweet smell of morning dew on rose petal was the perfect way to begin the day. As my stroll ended I was told that the large tree surrounding the ground was much smaller, giving Mable a clear view of her garden from every room in her mansion. My next stop was the Museum of Art, what a beautiful exhibit. This was actually my favorite place in the entire museum. The first thing that captured my eye, was the twenty feet DAVID towing over the garden. Even though it was not the original, it was radiant. His poise and grace just over took the outdoor quarter. Viewing a sculpture in a text book and actually touching and seeing it in person is amazing. Remembering what I was taught in class; I started reviewing him carefully.
