Every child in the classroom has a basic need and that is to feel included. Students may never express this need but it is there and that need is even greater in our students with learning disabilities (LD) (LEADSERVE 4). The community for LDs has faced many challenges throughout the years; even today there are many skeptics that believe all LDs fall beneath one blanketed term. Special education has made great strides in the past 40 years with congress passing the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (P.L. 94-142) in 1975 to ensure that all children with learning disabilities receive high quality education for free. Response- To-Intervention (RTI) was the second of five components that was added to the amendment of IDEA of 2004. The RTI approach was designed to prevent student failure by providing high quality instruction and student performance monitoring. The approach will allow students to receive instruction in the classroom, receive assistance early, provide research based interventions, and identify students that require special education services early. RTI could also lower the number of students that are inaccurately identified as students that require special education services. The RTI system is a multi-level plan that focuses on increasing instruction to separate students that are progressing through planned interventions. All students are screened through a universal screening process. Tier one separate students based on class or school wide intervention strategies. Tier two incorporates more targeted intervention strategies which may include additional instruction or replacement instruction outside the classroom. Students that reach tier three receive more individualized instruction that is more intense; however, students may receive recommendations for testing to receive special education services. RTI ensures that the needs of all students are being met and each student receives individualized …show more content…
Teachers can implement instructional procedures with fidelity and provide direct intervention; this eliminates the question of whether teachers are providing high quality instruction. Once that question is eliminated schools can accurately measure student response to interventions and begin to provide help at an early stage. Students that receive early interventions have a higher chance of overcoming developmental delays. Early intervention strategies prevent students from falling behind in the classroom which could lower the number of students that are held back each year and lower the number of students that dropout of school. Practices that are proven effective can be used to further instructional practices creating more confident teachers in the classroom. Students receive high quality education and the individual needs of all students are being met so test scores will show a positive correlation. School districts could also save the state money by accurately identifying students that require special education
