...Homer wrote about the Odyssey around 850BC and I think it reflected the society of that time greatly. I think the biggest idea of The Odyssey was the suffering. Since in Book 19 page 403, it revealed that “let his name be Odysseus… the Son of Pain, a name he’ll earn in full.” We could tell that throughout the whole book, the ultimate purpose of Odysseus’s adventure and suffering was to return home. He endured so much pain which lived up to his name and matured through all that he overcame. So that through suffering, he became the hero the ancient Greek admired and advocated, but he still remained a flawed being. The principle thing Odysseus learned was that God can control fate and he was destined to go home. In book 12, Odysseus’s crewman ate the cattle which disobeyed his orders of not eating the cattle while he went off to pray. They later died of eating the Sungod’s finest cattle since the crewmen at the same time disobeyed god. (Page 281-282) And what was interesting was that God put Odysseus to sleep while the crewmen ate the cattle. So God gave the people free will to decide what to do, but at the same time let it happen while Odysseus could have saved them. So I may say that the God made the crewmen die. The end of the book was the most amazing part to me. When Odysseus and the avengers for suitors were fighting, they only stopped fighting because the Gods would be angry. Calumet Country Club’s 18-hole golf course was designed by Donald Ross. Donald James Ross was born November 23, 1948 and he was an influential golf course designer. He was born in Scotland, but became a citizen of and spent most of his adult life in the United States. He was involved in designing or renovating around 400 different courses all within a 48 year span of time. He laid the foundation for America’s golf industry. Ross often created holes with invited run-up shots but had severe trouble at the back of the green, typically in the form of fall away slopes. He was admitted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977, a high honor rarely awarded for anything other than playing success. There is also a society named after him, The Donald Ross Society. The golf courses designed by Ross are works of art and are preservations. Factory worker and world renowned Guitarist Tony Iommi lost the fingertips of his ring finger and his middle finger on his right hand in a work related accident. Being left handed, this almost prevented him from playing guitar ever again. Instead he found a work around that would prove to be most beneficial for the metal movement that was to take place thereafter. After attempting to play right handed, He tuned his guitar down with lighter strings and used homemade plastic fingertips and created a new sound. After playing with several bands in the early 1960’s, he teamed with Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward under the moniker Earth. After some controversy with another band who shared the name Earth, in August of 1969 they changed the name of the band to Black Sabbath. This breathed new air into the band and they would go on to be pioneers in The Heavy Metal genre for decades to come. Black Sabbath paved the way for other bands like Motorhead, Deep Purple, and Rainbow. Excellent Women (1952) and A Glass of Blessings (1958) were reprinted in the late 1970s when Philip Larkin and David Cecil drew attention to the quality of her neglected work. Later novels, The Sweet Dove Died (1978) and Quartet in Autumn (1978), are no less engaging in their blend of pathos and comedy. One might well put beside these two English writers the Irish writer Mary Lavin (1912-1996), whose short stories focus on the ups and downs of family life with quiet pathos and humour. Her novels, The House in Clewes Street (1945) and Mary O'Grady (1950), are family histories presented with psychological sensitivity and a delicious vein of irony.
