...Maegan Forney GOVT 2306-N01 10 June 2015 Special Project #1 Governor Rick Perry gave a speech in 2009 regarding the issues Texas was facing. Governor Perry was extremely confident throughout his speech. During Perry’s speech, He was constantly referring back to the Texas Constitution. Perry is a right winged man who takes extreme pride in his state. At the end of his main point, Perry stated “This is how Texans have always been, very about themselves,” which is a good thing. Each state should put its foundations before everything else. The 10th Amendment subject has been debated for some time now, according to Perry. His belief is that the constitution does not empower the federal government to infringe upon our states rights. A states primary concern should be the peoples individual rights and responsibilities that the state has. I think that if Texas returned to what the Constitution and 10th Amendment really meant, it would become a much stronger, as a state. Perry is interested in being “a leader in a very strong 10th Amendment movement” and working with those who agree with him in the sense that Washington has become too intrusive. He wants to put America back on the right track, and to do so he needs each state to start competing with each other to encourage prosperity. To become a powerful country with a strong economy again, Perry believes that acting out the 10th Amendment will be something that will take him to where he wants to be. I think that everything...

...27 AUG 14 English 106 1700 The Indians are Coming for America In the essay “While I was Sleeping” by Thomas L. Friedman, he made a very strong argument (figuratively) that the world is becoming flat. After reading this essay, one really has no choice but to agree. The essay was written fairly recently due to the fact that he mentions very current technology in this essay. Mr. Friedman said “I just want to understand why Indians were taking Americans work and why they have become such an important pool for outsourcing Americans work” (626). It is obvious that he is somewhat warning the American culture, young and middle aged. The world really is flat in regards to technology, the economy, and our ever changing cultures. Thomas L. Friedman’s argument in this essay is that the world is flattening. He starts with the setting on a golf course in Bangalore, India. Bangalore is the home of the modern world’s most advanced technology. The author kept comparing his journey to Bangalore, to the journeys of Christopher Columbus. As we all know Christopher Columbus set out to find a more direct way to India and to prove that the world was round. The author of this essay uses the modern world of technology and its recent advances to prove that the world is in fact flat and that everyone needs to be ready to except significant changes to our culture and power as we know it. Through the help of interviews with the CEO of Infosys Technologies Limited, he supports the fact that...

...Managerial roles that I chose for Rick Federico include the leader role, monitor role, and entrepreneur role. I feel that the leader role is appropriate because Mr. Federico’s leadership ability is evident in the short video and he is already utilizing this role successfully. Specifically, according to Lussier and Achua (2013) the mark of an effective leader can be observed in the leader’s decision-making ability, the ability to influence others, and in their inclination to treat employees as assets. Han (2007) expands on our textbook’s definition of a leader and adds that establishing expectations regarding work quality, decision-making responsibility, and directing time commitments to the job are all outcomes of an effective leader also. I feel that based on the video Mr. Federico demonstrated competency in all of these areas. The second managerial role that I chose was the monitor role. Han (2007) explains that the effective monitor is constantly seeking to scan and monitor the environment in which he participates, much like Mr. Federico is seen doing on the video. Mr. Federico appears to have a predisposition towards this role that can be seen in his desire to stay abreast of current products and trends in the culinary field and identify those that are working well in his organization alongside his chef. In the video, Mr. Federico is seen inquiring extensively about how the customers as well as the other chefs are identifying with their products and how those constituents...

...PURPOSEFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE Definition: Purposeful: having a useful purpose; acting with a clear aim and with determination. Christian Life: showing the qualities that are thought of as typical of a Christian, Christ like.. Some people say that we are just evolutionary result of the survival of the fittest Others think of reincarnation Most of our lives, we have been searching for a purpose for our lives, one that has a deeper meaning than just the basic action of existing on this planet. We felt that our lives were meant for something; and something meaningful and worthwhile that would give us a true reason to live. We searched for this purpose in things like relationships, a career, a job, a hobby, in school, and in many more things, only to find disappointment at every turn; because though these things could preoccupy us for a moment, they would ultimately fail at fulfilling our spiritual desire for a meaningful life. Then we find God, and we feel that we see our purpose clearly. We are full of excitement and hopeful to see what God will do with our lives. The overwhelming joy and excitement that drives us motivates us to share the good news with everyone around us, telling them of the great purpose that God has in store for our lives. We devote ourselves to learning more, growing more, and doing more for God. We surround ourselves with more and more people who call themselves Christians to glean as much as we can from them, astounded at the miraculous experiences...

...authority. However, according to our text, Practicing Texas politics on page 319 it is said, “the legislative power is exercised through four major functions authorized by the Texas Constitution. These four major functions are, Delivering messages to the legislature, signing bills and concurrent resolutions, vetoing bills and concurrent resolutions and calling special sessions of the legislature.” The Texas governor has less formal powers than most other governors. Some Formal powers of the governor include: qualified veto, line item veto, “State of the state” address, appointment powers, call special sessions of legislature, plan powers, budget powers, law enforcement, military powers and clemency. According to thinkprogress.org, governor Rick Perry convened the first special session to give lawmakers more time to consider abortion-related bills that failed to advance during the state’s regular legislative period. Since special sessions operate under different rules, they allow the Republican majority to more easily rush through legislation without as...

For other writers, some were not able to return home with a new mindset about that new culture they had just experienced. Authors like Carl Hoffman, Paul Theroux, and Rick Steves are writers who were able to open their eyes and leave their comfort zone to explore and connect with another culture. Camp 1 In order for us to understand other countries, we must see them and experience them ourselves. Author Paul Theroux goes into detail when talking about the significance of the Mexican border, describing it as an “unintentional masterpiece” and the “oddest frontier” he has ever seen. ...Doran Roberts 11JA November11, 2014 English Language – Purpose Driven Essay The book “The Purpose Driven Life” written by Christian writer Rick Warren is one of the top selling Christian books of all time. This book impacted me in many ways. This book tells me that I was created for God’s family, fashioned to be like Christ, designed to serve and ordained for God’s mission. This book impacts me most when it reassures me that I was created to serve (ministry) and because of this I have a better understanding of my life and why it should be purpose driven. In chapter 3 the quote that really popped out to me was “Nothing matters more than knowing God’s purpose for your life, and nothing can compensate for not knowing them.” This quote brought me to the realization that when I know what God called me to do I will have a better appreciation for God and his purpose for my life. When I know my purpose in life I would have a drive to fulfill my purpose on earth and strive everyday to continually better myself. I never knew what my purpose in life was until I had a transforming experience that brought me to better knowledge of what my purpose in life was. All my life I had a passion for playing the drums. I started out at the tender age of five beating on pots and pans. Anything that made a sound I used it. My God mother and God-brother saw deep inside of me that my purpose in life was to play the drums for the...
