“Entrepreneurs Are Born Not Made.” Critically Analyse This Statement with Reference to the Literature and to Your Experience of Entrepreneurship.

...“Entrepreneurs are born not made.” Critically analyse this statement with reference to the literature and to your experience of entrepreneurship. This essay aims to evaluate the various traits identified with entrepreneurs, and then establish whether entrepreneurs are born with these traits, or whether, they are shaped and developed through their life experiences. Put simply the purpose of this essay is to establish whether entrepreneurs are ‘born or made’. This essay focuses on two distinct schools of researchers in the field of entrepreneurship: The more traditional group of researchers has focused on the personality characteristics of the individual, the internal factors, whilst a second group of researchers have taken a social cognitive approach. They look at the relationship between an individual and his or her environment. The external factors include culture, role models, work experience, education, and environment. This essay looks at the early definitions of an entrepreneur, evaluates the literature which supports the theory that entrepreneurs are ‘born’, and also evaluates the proposal that there is a relationship between the individual entrepreneur and their social environment, that is, entrepreneurs are ‘made’. Cantillon (1756) defined the entrepreneur as engaging in business without an assurance of profits; thus the bearing of risk being the distinguishing feature of an entrepreneur. Jean Baptiste Say expanded on this by making the entrepreneur the pivot of the...

Entrepreneurship Leadership in the 21st Century

...The past thirty years have witnessed the most powerful emergence of entrepreneurial activity in the world. Entrepreneurs are now described as aggressive catalysts for change in the world of business; individuals who recognize opportunities where others see chaos, contradiction, or confusion. They have been compared to Olympic athletes challenging themselves to break new barriers, to longdistance runners dealing with the agony of the miles, to symphony orchestra conductors who balance the different skills and sounds into a cohesive whole, or to top-gun pilots who continually push the envelope of speed and daring. The U.S. economy has been revitalized because of the efforts of entrepreneurs, and the world has turned now to free enterprise as a model for economic development. The passion and drive of entrepreneurs move the world of business forward as they challenge the unknown and continuously create the future (Kuratko, 2002). Several methods have been used to measure the impact of entrepreneurial ventures on the economy—for example, efforts to start a firm (which may not be successful), incorporation of a firm (which may never go into business), changes in net tax returns filed (reflecting new filings minus filings no longer received), and a substantial amount of full-time and part-time self-employment. According to the Small Business Administration, 672,000 new businesses were created in 2005; the largest in US history (even 12% higher than the...

...Entrepreneurship TERM PAPER Research paper on the subject of whether it’s better, as a career choice, to be an entrepreneur or work for others Is it better to be an entrepreneur or an employee? Most of the academic research focuses on finding external factors or personal qualities that create entrepreneurs. In early academic papers emphasis has been on psychology and sociology, while more recent research is focusing more on economic perspective. Overall, entrepreneurs are a minority if compared to paid employees. There are most certainly more people who choose to work for someone else rather than attempt to be an entrepreneur. Reasons behind this career choice are very different. Most obvious reason for a rational person might be financial benefits. Research done by Hamilton (2000) shows that initial earnings as well as earning growth is much larger for paid employees in the first 10 years if compared to entrepreneurs, not even including fringe benefits. However, money is definitely not the only factor that affects the career choice when it comes to a decision, whether to become an entrepreneur or to go work for someone else. If entrepreneurs are perceived as utility-maximizing individuals, then independence, risk bearing, work effort, and perquisites associated with self-employment plays a very vital role in their career choice (Douglas and Shepher, 2000). In the following parts of this research paper, various benefits and shortcoming of being an entrepreneur...

Financial Markets, Insurance and Entrepreneurship in the Countries of the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) Region

...Financial Markets, Insurance and Entrepreneurship in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region Draft not to be cited February 27, 2013 1. Introduction The goal of the paper is to focus on the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and particularly those of the of the South of the Mediterranean, and examine the relationship between insurance – defined as the capability of covering the cost of future harmful events-and entrepreneurship broadly defined as the capability to start independent businesses activities and possibly introduce new combinations of productive factors. The analysis is based on the distinction between uncertainty and risk that Knight unveiled (Knight, 2012) arguing that risk involves situations where a decision maker face unknown outcomes but known ex-ante probability distributions, while uncertainty is characterized by situations in which the probability distribution of a random outcome is unknown. Consequently, while risk can be covered by insurance, uncertainty normally is not. The other pillar of this research is the role of entrepreneurship; a factor that the economic literature has not considered for long time and that in the last 20 years has become the center of any strategy for economic growth in emerging and advanced economies. The discovery of the role of entrepreneurs dates back to Schumpeter (Schumpeter, 1982a) who regards entrepreneurs as the engine of economic growth. Schumpeter (Schumpeter...

...Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship is the act and art of being an entrepreneur or "one who undertakes innovations, finance and business acumen in an effort to transform innovations into economic goods". This may result in new organizations or may be part of revitalizing mature organizations in response to a perceived opportunity. The most obvious form of entrepreneurship is that of starting new businesses (referred as Startup Company); however, in recent years, the term has been extended to include social and political forms of entrepreneurial activity. When entrepreneurship is describing activities within a firm or large organization it is referred to as intra-preneurship and may include corporate venturing, when large entities spin-off organizations.[1] According to Paul Reynolds, entrepreneurship scholar and creator of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, "by the time they reach their retirement years, half of all working men in the United States probably have a period of self-employment of one or more years; one in four may have engaged in self-employment for six or more years. Participating in a new business creation is a common activity among U.S. workers over the course of their careers." [2] And in recent years has been documented by scholars such as David Audretsch to be a major driver of economic growth in both the United States and Western Europe. "As well, entrepreneurship may be defined as the pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources currently controlled...
