...55 MPH SPEED LIMIT SPEED! The only thing that people think about when they are in a rush. Have you ever wonder why there are different speed limits around the U.S.? I bet you have. Every day somewhere, someone gets in a car crash or is getting a traffic ticket. The reasons for these situations is because people don’t go by the speed limit. In 1974, President Richard M. Nixon, signs the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, setting a new national maximum speed limit. He signed a federal law lowering all national highway speed limits to 55 MPH. This act was intended to force Americans to drive at speeds deemed more fuel-efficient, curbing the U.S. appetite for foreign oil. To conserve fuel and save lives, the 55 MPH speed limit should be restored to save fuel,...

...Neighborhood Speed Control By Charles Russell, 21 May 2011 Thesis: Changing our neighborhood traffic speed so everyone can be safe, when they want to take a walk, jog down the road and or even ride their bikes but most important, protecting their most valuable asset; their children. There is a beautiful upscale Washington DC suburb called “Kingstown” located in Alexandria, VA. This is the area my family and I decided to live about five years ago. We purchase a townhouse located off a street called “Chelsea Search Way” which is a cuddly sac off another street named “Summer Ridge.” This is the main street going through our neighborhood and links many cuddle sacs together. Summer Ridge is like one big loop that turns off of Kingstown Village Parkway and then reconnects after a mile and a half. Summer Ridge is one of the liveliest streets neighborhoods you would ever see. Everywhere you look there are small children playing, people walking their dogs, joggers running and bicyclist’s riding. The only problem with this is that this neighborhood could be one of the most dangerous places because there is a lot of traffic going up and down this road. Each year over 4,000 sons, daughters, mothers & fathers were killed while walking in their neighborhoods or crossing streets. Fairfax County must not understand that there is a problem here, because the speed limit was set at 25 miles per hour, which I believe is way too fast for such a playground. Not only the speed is the problem...

...to rush ourselves in order to make it to our commitments on time and to make things worse, traffic and speed limits get in our way. In moments like these a speed limit becomes more of an annoying suggestion rather that an enforced rule. Not necessarily by increasing or removing speed limits freeways would become dangerous, but also is not a matter of just take away these limits. Society should be better educated and trained in order to create a safer and more efficient road environment giving chance to reach longer distances in a shorter amount of time and why not, put our powerful line of super-vehicles to the test. In America, the average Maximum Speed Limit ranges between 55-75 mph. as a community, it’s necessary to create safety parameters in order to maintain a controlled environment and reduce the risk of fatalities, injuries and/or property damage since it’s believed that speed is one of the greatest killers out in the roads, it gives less reaction time and also in a vehicle traveling at a high speed, any defect or anomaly on the surface tend to be a high risk of loss of control of the vehicle. Also environmental issues have been part of the opposition and there has been an ongoing debate between environmentalists and fuel consumption. A car’s fuel consumption increases with speed and fuel conservation is a key factor in reducing air consumption. I love speed and I drive pretty fast as well. I know for sure I am “breaking” the law, but I also know I am not the...

...Argument Mapping May 3, 2015 PAD 520 Professor S. Taylor The U.S. should return to the 55-mph speed limit in order to conserve fuel and save lives. The law was a response to the 1973 oil embargo, and its intent was to reduce fuel consumption. In the year after the National Maximum Speed Law was enacted, road fatalities declined 16.4%, from 54052 in 1973 to 45196 in 1974 (Friedman & Hedeker, 2009). In 1974, the federal government passed the National Maximum Speed Law, which restricted the maximum permissible vehicle speed limit to 55 miles per hour (mph) on all interstate roads in the United States. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.25 per gallon for gas, in additional; driving each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed; gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph. Aggressive driving to incudes; speeding, rapid acceleration and braking wastes gas. Sensible driving can lower your gas mileage and also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money. Some studies show that drivers are changing their habits or lifestyle in a number of ways to offset gas prices. According to an AAA national survey of 1,011 adults in March, consumers reported changing their habits in the following ways: 86% driving less, 54% driving a more fuel-efficient cars, 33% carpooling, and 15% using public transportation. U.S. gasoline demand...

The handbook was developed by CTRE and funded by the Iowa Highway Research Board (TR455). The handbook describes straightforward trafficstudy procedures to help local agencies “get their arms” around specific traffic-related questions or potential problems. Data collected from these studies can be critical to decision making and can help agencies communicate more effectively with community members and local officials. All procedures outlined in the handbook and described below follow national standards. Figure 1. Example stopwatch spot speed study layout Figure 2. Example radar meter spot speed study layout Spot speed studies are used primarily to determine the distribution of traffic speeds, or vehicle speed percentiles, at a specific location. These data help traffic engineers determine and/or evaluate traffic operations and traffic control practices at specific locations; establish design elements for roadways, pedestrian walkways, and bikeways; assess roadway safety questions; and make other...

...the qualifier stance does not change. For instance, consumer Reports tested the effect of higher speeds on gas mileage. David Champion, director of auto testing, found that boosting the highway speed of a 2006 Toyota Camry cut gasoline mileage dramatically: •55 m.p.h. – 40.3 miles per gallon •65 m.p.h. – 34.9 miles per gallon •75 m.p.h. – 29.8 miles per gallon On a hypothetical 1,900-mile round trip from New York City to Disney World in Florida, the Camry would use 47 gallons of gas at 55 m.p.h.. But at 75 mph, it would burn nearly 64 gallons – a $70 difference. If everyone could reduce their driving by just 10 percent, the savings would total nearly 1 million barrels of gasoline every day. (Retting, 2008) In regards to the fatalities, Institute studies show that deaths on rural interstates increased 25-30 percent when states began increasing speed limits from 55 to 65 mph in 1987. A 2002 study also evaluated the effects of increasing rural interstate speed limits from 65 mph to either 70 or 75 mph. States that increased speed limits to 75 mph experienced 38 percent more deaths per million vehicle miles traveled than expected; an estimated 780 more deaths. States that increased speed limits to 70 mph experienced a 35 percent increase, resulting in approximately 1,100 more deaths. As one can see maintaining the speed limit at 55mph conserves fuel and saves more lives on the road. (Elvik, 2005) For over four years following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the...

...I am interested in writing about the speed limit in Massachusetts. I choose this subject because I find it too be an issue with rules on the road getting more strict as I am a driver in my city. Should Massachusetts have a low speed limit? If 30 mph was not slow enough try on 25 the state is pushing its safety measures. Will 25mph ensure more safety? It may be a bother to try to stay at the speed limit but I think it will ensure people protection. I will have too source records of crashes due to speeding in the city through Mass-Dots database or police reports. January 9th 2017 Massachusetts mayor Marty Walsh and his transportation committee signed this bill to reduce the speed limit from 30mph to 25mph on streets that do not have a speed limit sign. Other measures such as signs and new legislation put forward to slow down the drivers in Massachusetts. Speeding has numerous consequences, such as tickets accidents, deaths and car issues. Changing the speed limit to be low will greatly increase the safety of our citizens by giving the driver a better reaction time. One of the main reasons for crashes is speeding. People die in crashes. I have also watched the news a lot to hear enough bike rider hit n runs. What affects or changes has this law of 25 mph made to the commonwealth of...

...The claim that the US should adopt the rule of 55 miles per hour as the national speed limit in order to : conserve fuel, save lives, reduce air pollutants, and provide a standard for safety reducing traffic accidents on American roads, highways, and interstates. The Union of Concerned Scientists tells us that dropping from 70 to 60 mph improves fuel efficiency by an average of 17.2 percent. Dropping from 75 to 55 improves fuel efficiency by 30.6 percent!. In an easy to vision example for the people to understand example: A family sedan, every 10 mph you drive over 60 is like paying 54 cents per gallon more for gas you bought at $3.25 a gallon. That extra cost is even higher if you're buying more expensive gas, and for big SUVs and other less-efficient vehicles. The carbon emissions percentage will also drop considerably reducing pollution by 33 percent, and the time you save by going easy on the accelerator may not add up to as much as you thought. On a 300-mile trip, driving 65 instead of 70 mph would cost you only 20 minutes time difference and save money and spew less carbon into the atmosphere. Most small to midsize cars get the best mileage between 45 and 55 mph The studies show that as speeds creep higher, fuel efficiency drops. For every mile per hour over 60 mph fuel economy drops by an average of 1 Percent which is lowering your fuel efficiency. The US Department of Transportation stated in a study dated 2010 that the factors will determine the amounts of...

...also not have more than four passengers in your car (three friends, driver, parent—MAX!) This law is extremely important. If residents do not follow this law, it can cause danger to other drivers. Traffic laws are something EVERYONE needs to follow. While attending driving school, the main reason why people were attending was for speeding. Including myself, driving school has taught me the dangers of speeding. Speeding is not always the cause of crashes, but it is a main event in this situation. Alabama’s basic speed law provides that you must never drive a vehicle at a speed that is faster than the reasonable speed. Weather, roadwork, and your car conditions determine the reasonable speed limit. Traffic laws are no joke! All the speed limit signs are the MAXIMUM limit you can go. There are also some conditions where driving very slow is dangerous as well. By this, drivers who block or hinder other traffic by driving at low speeds can cause many accidents. Slow speeds are necessary when you cross a street, railroads, and approaching flags,...

...SPEED ZONE STUDY March 14, 2013 INTRODUCTION Recently in many areas of the State of Texas the speed limit has been changed. While some areas have remained at the 70 mph limit that many drivers have become accustom to, other areas have seen increases from 75 mph up to 85 mph. But, what effect does this have on drivers that travel between these areas with varying speed limits? This study is being conducted to determine what these changes in speed limits have on drivers. With the current speed limit of 70 mph, how fast do driver truly drive? And given the average speed it is the goal of this study to determine if drivers will increase their speeds proportionally in the new high speed zones. While there is much debate on the speed limits and the effects it has on drivers, this study will serve to provide an accurate study on whether or not driver actually pay any attention to the posted speed limits. In addition the driving habits of today’s driver will be examined in relation to posted speed limits on many of the Texas highways. ABSTRACT The Speed Zone Study will be conducted in an effort to better understand how the recent changes in the posted speed limit affect drivers on those highways. To better understand how these changes affect drivers this study will monitor traffic in areas with different speed limits. The goal is to determine if driver adhere to the posted speed limit or if drivers exceed the posted speed limit. If drivers exceed the posted speed limit...

...Kendrick M. Benton Mr. Clark Writing 1 Compare and Contrast Essay Autobahn vs. U.S. highways When it comes to the U.S. we love the American open road, there is nothing like it. We have all the necessary traffic laws, cameras, and speed limits. But who needs that when you have the autobahn in Germany! Like every other place in the world the U.S. highways have long stretches of open road. The down side to the autobahn is because there are no speed limits, there are more deaths. There is a news report I read that 4 people were found in the trenches which is never a good thing. U.S. highways are safe for the most part people still have accidents but a large percent of them are usually ok. In the U.S. are traffic laws are pretty self explanatory. If you speed and get caught the police will pull you over and politely (yeah right) give you a ticket. If you feel like they are wrong you can go to court and fight it. In Germany, there is no speed limit so it gives the cop less work to do. In Texas, the most common speed limit is 60 mph. people who drive a ninety thousand dollar sports car in Texas are wasting money mainly because you can not max out the power potential that you might want to achieve. In Germany it is the opposite. There is no speed limits on the Autobahn there are some laws but most of them are towards the truck drivers and farmers. There is nothing wrong per say with the American way of doing things I just believe that I need to drive fast. The autobahn...
