...LAT1 - Serial Killers Abstract This paper that was written explores how a person is born innocent, and evolves into a monstrous and calculated serial killer. It will mention several different specific serial killers and their histories to support the facts. Another area that is explored is the difference between mass murderers and serial killers. Many times theses terms are used simultaneously; however the fact is that they are different. Reviewing the classifications, behaviors, motives, childhood neglect, sanity, and how profiling and other methods will assist in catching a serial killer. Understanding and studying serial killers can help in preventing them to start killing, or in catching them before they continue killing. Research shows that the problem of serial killing can be addressed by understanding its causes, identifying common behaviors and motivations of serial killers, and using this information to develop tools for law enforcement to prevent initial or repeated killings If a person commits a murder, it doesn’t constitute to be tagged a serial killing. ...team assignment Robert Ressler, FBI profiler shared his personal memories on the 2001 Criminal Profiling Research video. Ressler spoke about how he knew the criminals better than they knew themselves. He read each file and studied all there is to know of each person so that when he interviewed him or her, he knew the right questions to ask. Ressler knew each person’s back ground (childhood upbringing, relationships with family and people in his and her lives, employment history, social behaviors, motives for killings (Films Media Group, 2001). Robert Ressler interviewed a 6ft 9in 300 pound man in prison who killed 11 people including his grandparents, mother, and college female students by psychologically torturing each person then decapitating them (Films Media Group, 2001). The motivation for the killings were clearly unknown other than the fact that he clearly enjoyed torturing and ripping heads off his victims. Mr. Robert Ressler’s profiling skills was put to the test when conducting an interview with the serial killer. The time of the interview proved not to be at Ressler's favor because it happened to be at a time when the guards were serving other prisoners food, and were not available at his time of need. The serial killer realized that the guard was not there to let Ressler out after the interview and decides to psychologically torture him by telling him “how easy it would be for him to rip his head off his body” (Films Media Group, 2001). While it is impossible to predict who will become a serial killer there are traits that appear to be similar in all killers. These behaviors include cruelty to animals, bedwetting, lying, drug and alcohol abuse, and a history of violence. The man credited with being the first serial killer in the United States was Herman Mudgett, a.k.a. Dr. Henry H. Holmes. Holmes did most of his killing in Illinois in the disguise of a pharmacist and is credited with 133 murders. About the same time, serial killing was also occurring in London by a man known as Jack the Ripper. Ripper’s killing started in 1888 and was never caught for the heinous murders of five prostitutes. What can cause certain people to commit such murderous acts perpetrated against other human beings? Is it just pure evil or is it some kind of a mental illness? ...Animal Cruelty It’s dark, quiet, and you’re all by yourself. You whine and yell for help but nobody seems to hear you. The people you thought were your family abandoned you, left you all alone in a small confined cage. There is no place to use the bathroom, other than where you stand. The awful stench of your faeces grows worse and worse each second. The only food they left you with, you ate in the first day. Now the only thing keeping you alive is your desperation to eat and drink your own waste and the will to survive. You are a dog left to die by its owners, with the thought that you are lower than humans and have no real importance or worth. I have always been an animal lover and it has always disgusted me to see an animal being mistreated. Even when I am watching a movie and an animal gets hurt I always cringe with sadness. I remember I had these neighbors; we were good friends with them. They always wanted to have a dog but either they never had the money to take care of a pet or they just did not know how. That never stopped them from constantly having a dog. I remember two specific dogs they had, one was a mixed bulldog, Daisy, and the other was a Jack Russell Terrier, Jack. Daisy was such a beautiful sweet dog, but the way she was treated was poor. If they did not have any dog food they would feed her cereal and milk.
