Since the family in “Rocking Horse Winner” thinks that they have such a poor financial situation, the family members dangerously focus all that they do around money. The mother is concerned about their amount of money being able to keep up with the social standard that the family has created for themselves. She and her husband both receive small incomes, but they spend most of it on items that keep them in “the style” (1). Once the mother gets more money, she doesn’t think about saving some, or not spending it all at once; she immediately spends all of her money on items that will make their family look good in front of everyone else. Kavitha’s husband, Vinod, does not appreciate Kavitha for all of the things that she does for him. Vinod and Kavitha had an arranged marriage; they didn’t marry each other because they wanted to. She married him because it was her duty. Whenever Kavitha reveals her beliefs to Vinod, he makes fun of them and slaps her when she tries to talk back. Kavitha likes Vinod for what he doesn’t do, not for what he does. It is clear that they don’t want to be together because they don’t love each other. When Kavitha and Vinod get stuck on the stopped train, she realizes that this is the time when she will finally leave him. The burglars enter their berth and start searching everyone for their valuables. If somebody didn’t do what they wanted, they would either take them outside to be killed or hit them with their weapons. They only hurt them to show that they are tough and that they can make anyone give them what they want. While the burglars are searching everyone for valuables, Kavitha starts to notice some clues that lead to an escape plan. A little boy helps her, and gives her 2 stones and a piece of twine. Using these, she and the little boy execute the plan, escaping the train and Kavitha’s husband. She leaves everything that she had behind, knowing that she has done the right
